Something big is going on - for Facebook. It is a monumental IT cock-up, probably done by somebody who was updating something. The current thinking is the bit that routes all the traffic to and from the internet (DNS) has been effectively switched off. In other words, Facebook literally disconnected itself from the internet. Unfortunately switching it back on isn’t as simple as just pressing a button. Lots of stuff affected, but there are even reports of people turning up and not being able to get in to the building, because all their systems are linked to those servers.

When it comes back online, they will have to restrict the number of people trying to get on until the DNS can all update properly.

At least that’s what my IT husband has been saying. (I may have paraphrased him, this conversation went on for an hour 😛)

Glad it's not just me! I came home from a weekend away and needed to Whatsapp my friends (that I just left) immediately and nothing doing. Thought my phone was still on wrong network or something. Very frustrating!

Everyone has outages now and then and few systems are infallible.

Could have been a bad mistake (highly likely), could have been a pissed off engineer (unlikely), or some kind of rogue actor (highly unlikely).

Most likely reason is they've introduced a change that's gone badly wrong and had downstream repercussions that don't fix themselves automatically. So they might be able to back the change out, but it'll take a while for everything else (DNS) to catch back up.

I think after today’s whistle blower’s interview there will be lots of lawsuits against them, they are trying to clear all non existent accounts and covering their tracks.

Let me tell you all a story.
My employee was bit off or few days and I wondered why. So I aske him. He told me about his pet fish passing and how much it hit him. I only did what any decent boss would do. I got a collection for flowers and small stone memorial for Fisho. I personally went and spoke at Fisho's memorial and brought a bottle of Monet. I also gave my employee a month off to deal with the loss.
Now that's what a normal, goo employer does.

Seriously. I did some cool stuff today and shared the video on FB and Instagram. Now it's like it never even happened! What's the point without the likes!!!!! I might have well have just stayed home!

Seriously though, I organise a lot of group activities. All through the affected sites. I'm pretty sure I have everyone's phone number so if they don't come back up, it'll be on me to organise something new. But I'm not sure how I'll reconnect with non local people in other groups I only have SM contact details for.

I use to follow bands and venues for gigs as well as a few on lone communities for fitness and veggie eating and sewing.

Wish it was down longer as my DC has been much nicer tonight as they aren't buried in it. Actually had a conversation 🤣

Not read the thread but I see people on Twitter saying because of the way it has happened, a lot of FB has actually "gone" and can't be brought back.
