To ask why we aren’t talking about the fuel anymore?

We still have all our petrol stations empty, there has been the odd delivery but all the pumps have empty signs very quickly.

It doesn’t seem to be on the news anymore, are we just accepting that this is how we now live?

@Evenstar

None here SE, DH tried to get me some this afternoon and I tried in the week, nothing. I am sick of it, but because other areas have it we don’t seem to matter.
It's not that you don't matter. Do you think you'd suddenly get fuel if it was on the news? No. That's what caused the problem in the first place. The best thing is for it NOT to be on the news!
LakieLady · 04/10/2021 09:29
@FreedomFaith that's very simplistic. There are loads of places in the SE that have shit public transport. The SE isn't just London. And no, I don't live in the SE.
Steady, you'll get me banging on about my pisspoor bus service again!

Outside of the major towns in Sussex, public transport is appalling.

Doris86 · 04/10/2021 09:38

@Tealightsandd Yes there are some issues with delivery. However they would be entirely manageable if it wasn’t for the idiots who’ve been panic buying and making the situation worse.

This only became a major issue once the media reported BP had supply issues in about 1% of its petrol stations, and the panic started.

I know people want to believe this because it makes them feel more comfortable but a full week before that BP news I had to go to three petrol stations to get fuel for my car (BP was actually the station I eventually used). This has never happened to me before. There was already a shortage before the news, in my part of the country in any event.

nannynick · 04/10/2021 09:44

It's day 10. People are running out of fuel. It's not panic buying. The panic buyers have fuel. It's those of us who need a car for our work, for getting to work, getting children to nursery/school, who have small cars with small fuel tanks... whatever the reason we need more fuel as what we had has now gone.

Are some people refilling when they have 3/4 of a tank, maybe some are but they won't be taking much fuel. So those panic buyers are surely not a big problem in terms of fuel availability, more causing a queue length problem.

Silverswirl · 04/10/2021 09:44

@FreedomFaith

We've got enough up north, can easily get.

Really it's up north that needs it. We have shite public transport in comparison to down south. Some areas don't have any public transport at all, or it comes by twice a day and that's it (if you're lucky and it doesn't get cancelled or breaks down). I bet most people on this thread who can't get fuel could use public transport, they just don't want to. That's fine when you have a choice, you currently don't.

Plus the South voted for brexit, this is what you should have expected and been prepared for, and not overreacted to. Shortages were bound to happen for a while on certain things due to losing people who will actually work. Instead, you all went nuts filling up tons of containers in a few days. It's the covid mentality again, just further proof the human race is selfish and doesn't give a shit about others, and is also on the whole pretty stupid.

I’m in the SE, voted remain and there are also only 2 buses per day running here and I’m nowhere near a train station. I think that’s bingo isn’t it?
seaandsandcastles · 04/10/2021 09:46

Because it being news just adds fuel to the fire and enables panic buying. It’s a good thing it’s not being reported anymore. You’re more likely to get fuel that way.

Generallystruggling · 04/10/2021 09:46

Think the issue is mostly resolved now, no issue here in Yorkshire anyway.

seaandsandcastles · 04/10/2021 09:47

@FreedomFaith Oh honey, you can’t blame everything on Brexit forever 😉

Uff its been explained in the news that petrol stations have deliveries based on known demand from historical data becuae otherwise where donthey store it! So if overnight suddenly there is more demand than usual they will run out and of course they cant always bring forward deliveries

Its hardly rocket science. Then as the problem becomes nationwide deliveries may have been prioritised in areas so some stations who would of expected a delivery didn't get one so stayed shut.

And yes ppl are still buying cos even those panic buyers will go top up even £7 worth and keep their tank topped up

Doris86 · 04/10/2021 09:53

@idiotfacelicker Yes like I said there were some issues already, but you still managed to get fuel at third petrol station. It’s the panic buying that has now caused things to go mad and made the situation much harder to manage.

idiotfacelicker · 04/10/2021 09:56
@idiotfacelicker Yes like I said there were some issues already, but you still managed to get fuel at third petrol station. It’s the panic buying that has now caused things to go mad and made the situation much harder to manage.
But don't you understand everyone else trying to get petrol that fault also had to resort to that third petrol station I found which then would run dry, then there's nothing. Then demand pe ya up waiting for one of the stations to get a delivery, then when it arrives everyone whose been waiting days rocks up.

This would have happened to some extent regardless. Have a few extra people refilled earlier, no doubt. Would people have been left with empty tanks and dry petrol stations either way. Without a doubt.

@TableFlowerss

Makes no difference to me as I’m not in the position you’re in. I’m trying to be helpful, so don’t know what you’re going on about saying ‘it smacks at ‘Shut up southerners’.

Go on about it all you like but don’t expect it to end anytime soon…..

The last thing you are is helpful. You’re just stirring.

Based on many of the posts on this thread, next time I shouldn’t give a crap when there is a problem up north.

idiotfacelicker · 04/10/2021 09:58

On the point about the south voting for Brexit so getting their comeuppance, see attached map. Let's not go there...

To ask why we aren’t talking about the fuel anymore?
YourFinestPantaloons · 04/10/2021 10:01

Laughing my head off at Northerners not ever being able to afford to fill their tank 😂😂 do you think it's like Oliver Twist up here or something?

Doris86 · 04/10/2021 10:03

@idiotfacelicker Yes I fully understand that, but don’t you agree that people panic buying more fuel than they need has vastly escalated the situation?

HardStaringBearFromDarkestPeru · 04/10/2021 10:16

Where I am in the SE, it seems hit & miss - more miss than hit... Timing & luck is everything.

Saturday a friend went to 6 petrol stations in south Surrey - including 2 on the A3 - all were shut, no petrol or diesel.
Saturday I went to 5 petrol stations in north Surrey - again all closed as no petrol or diesel.
Sunday I got a text saying at a nearby garage, there were 2 pumps of unleaded (out of 8!) but no diesel. I was lucky - don't know how long it lasted as the queue rapidly became massive!

So yes, certainly in my group we're all still chatting about it, group texting if you see a station open.
That and whether your fuel provider has gone out of business yet.
I guess we'll be moving onto Xmas food & toys soon enough...

Finzi · 04/10/2021 10:37

Agree with @nannynick. The panic buyers have their full tanks. If they want to top up they must be spending hours doing it! I don’t believe that’s generally the case now.

@seaandsandcastles

@FreedomFaith Oh honey, you can’t blame everything on Brexit forever 😉

No. But we can blame the things that are a result of Brexit on Brexit, or should we all just accept the country’s in a far worse state than it was before we left the EU and get on with it.
Doris86 · 04/10/2021 10:42

@Finzi

Agree with *@nannynick*. The panic buyers have their full tanks. If they want to top up they must be spending hours doing it! I don’t believe that’s generally the case now.
Even if panic buying has stopped, it will take a while to recover from the shortages created by it.
TableFlowerss · 04/10/2021 11:40

**But that's not the case in the SE. It made things worse but there really is an issue with delivery. Sheer numbers of people (1/3 of the UK population) all needing fuel.

Remember too the southern centricness of Insulate Britain. Their repeated attacks on the M25 - blocking traffic on major routes - is bound to have some impact**

@Tealightsandd

But there are over 8000 filling stations and only a tiny number of them that had problems, that were to do with supply. wasn’t it only about 5 they closed for that actual reason?

The media got hold of and boom- panic sets in. Perpetrated the problem ten fold.

Yes you’re right about the clowns on the M25 and that could have contributed it.

String? What a weird way to look at it.

From an outsiders perspective, people are advising what’s making it worse potentially, yet you’re taking it as a personal attack. Strange…

Don’t worry, the northerners are used to no one giving a crap about them, it’s standard!

icedcoffees · 04/10/2021 15:36

The situation is very slowly improving here (Cumbria) but even so our local garage was out of diesel and petrol for a couple of hours this morning while they waited for a delivery, another garage won't have any (of anything) until Monday, and another has put a £10 limit on for all fuels.

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 04/10/2021 17:12

I’m in SE and couldn’t panic buy petrol last week as had Covid. I went to 4 nearest petrol stations all closed. I need to go to hospital (20 miles away) on Wednesday so hope I’m able to get some tomorrow.
