Will this make people reconsider allowing their teenagers to have the vaccine.
Yes or No?

It’s made me think a lot about it even though my child isn’t old enough to be vaccinated yet. If the times comes I think I will be much more convinced than I maybe was before.

It’s a tragic story.

It does not change my mind about the risk my children face.

Learnthroughplay3 · 02/10/2021 23:16

@Porcupineintherough completely incorrect information

SheikhMaraca · 02/10/2021 23:18

@Porcupineintherough

Covid infection is 6 times more likely to cause myocarditis in younger people than the Pfizer vaccine. Worried about myocarditis? Then get vaccinated against COVID.
Do you have a source for this?
Zandathepanda · 02/10/2021 23:20

I hope the family can take some comfort that their strength in telling the papers their sad circumstances will persuade more young people to get the vaccine and she will indirectly help others.
My Dd has brain damage from an unidentifiable virus in early 2020 (she was 15 at the time). She has had both vaccines (in Group 6) and was ok. Hopefully should get a booster soon too.

@PeachesPumpkin

Normally the stories are printed not long after the death, and I'm not even sure if the death certificate has even been created at that point. I'm not sure how long that takes. The media just push it as a covid death and they certainly don't seem to correct the news stories afterwards!

There was that poor young man Aaron Doherty in Northern Ireland last year, his name and face was plastered everywhere as Northern Irelands youngest covid victim, and his family had to really push to be heard because they said as far as they were concerned he died of heart failure and he had underlying issues. I believe his death certificate did say that he died from heart failure but that didn't stop his name and face being used to push the agenda at the time.

montysma1 · 02/10/2021 23:22

We know more about this vaccine than any vaccine in history.

Takingabreakagain · 02/10/2021 23:26

@PeachesPumpkin
It's put on the death certificate if they tested positive in the last 28 days. There can be more than one reason on the death certificate

Narutocrazyfox · 02/10/2021 23:26

This is awful, but it won't change my mind. I wouldn't vaccinate under 18s.

Takingabreakagain · 02/10/2021 23:27

@montysma1
How is that true? We don't even have any long term data as there has been no 'long term' since the first people had the vaccine never mind the first young people

Timeisavirtue · 02/10/2021 23:29

It’s not made me change my approach, we were always asking DS 13 if he wanted it, he’s autistic but understands as he reads up on everything. He so far has said he wants it.... so that’s what we will work towards.

DeborahAnnabel · 02/10/2021 23:31

No. One child is called an edge case.
Very sad for her family obviously. Not going to vaccinate my child against something that, edge cases and immunocompromised aside, doesn’t affect them.

SaltedCaramelIcedLatte · 02/10/2021 23:34

Bloody heart breaking ...poor family!

Ugzbugz · 02/10/2021 23:35

If this virus affected young children and adults the way it has old people and vunreable but didn't affect those over 20 say, would people take this so called risky vaccine? Would they hate old people for refusing it?

My 12 year old has had it.

bizboz · 02/10/2021 23:40

But if he's already had covid, why does he need a vaccine?

Presumably because it's not uncommon to get Covid more than once? It is generally thought that having Covid gives you about 6 months immunity. Some countries will give you a Covid-pass for travel if you are proven to have tested positive in the last 6 months, but not beyond that.

Passmeamenuatthetottenham · 02/10/2021 23:41

I saw this earlier, how utterly tragic and awful, poor girl and her poor family.

However, I thought the exact same thing when Lisa Shaw died a few months ago after the AZ vaccine. I don't think this particular incident gives a strong case either way, its so rare, as are severe vaccine reactions.

I'm glad that my kids are too young for the vaccine to be honest and I don't have to make this decision. I am double vaccinated and did so without even thinking about it.

621CustardCream438 · 02/10/2021 23:47

It’s tragic and heartbreaking for her family. Truly awful. I’d probably vaccinate my children if they were teens, though they are younger and very fortunately covid was mild for them.

But I don’t make important medical decisions on the basis of one rare, albeit awful and very sad story. Very occasionally children die of all sorts of things - but I didn’t vaccinate my children against chickenpox for example despite stories in newspapers about a very very sick child with it at about the age I could have vaccinated mine. I still remember that child, but I don’t use his story as medical al evidence. I hate that these stories get used as some kind of weapon for people on one side or the other - make up your mind based on reputable medical advice and the statistical evidence.

whynotwhatknot · 02/10/2021 23:47

how sad didnt even know it could affect the heart like that

Tigerlily49 · 02/10/2021 23:50

Absolutely heartbreaking for that poor family.

My 13 year old is currently very, very unwell with Covid. She was supposed to have her vaccine yesterday and both she and I are hugely frustrated that the UK chose not to offer the jab to 12-15 year olds until AFTER they had returned to school this year. The virus has ripped through her year group in the past couple of weeks to the extent that all 120 of them were sent home this last week (well actually the 2/3 of them who were not already isolating due to having positive tests). DD lost a year of schooling due to glandular fever a couple of years ago and it feels like “here we go again”, except in this case it absolutely could have been avoided, we were just never given the choice until it was too late.

Takingabreakagain · 02/10/2021 23:50

@bizboz
So would you say the vaccine is more about what you can and can't do such as travel rather than actual health benefits?
If you have recovered from covid already, particularly as a young person, then I can't understand how it would be of any great harm to you a second time.

Notmoresugar · 02/10/2021 23:50

Devastating 😢

Vinniepolis · 02/10/2021 23:56

It’s very sad but the chances of it happening are vanishingly small, so no I won’t be vaccinating my kids. Even before Covid, I refused to give them the flu jab.

SinisterBumFacedCat · 02/10/2021 23:59

Awful. But you are bashing your head against a brick wall on her OP. No matter how many stories there are people won’t change their minds until they are personally affected and even then others won’t listen. I feel sorry for the teenagers who want the vaccine and their parents won’t listen.

As for the everything is dangerous brigade, do you say that on all threads or is it just the COVID ones?

loopylauren · 03/10/2021 00:01
