If you were predicted to have a giant baby, how big were they when born?

I was told my baby is already 6.5 pounds at 32 weeks! They reckon by 37 weeks he’s going to be well over 9pounds and are pushing for a csection. I have gestational diabetes which I’m now taking meds for so hoping that will slow him down a bit but I really really don’t want a csection if I can help it and want to see about induction at 37 weeks.

My daughter was predicted to be big but she was 7 pounds at 37+5.

What would you do in my situation?

My son was predicted to be about 9 lbs, he was actually 6lb 3oz, and was born at exactly 39 weeks. He couldn’t even fit in “first size” clothes he was so small.

1stTimeMama · 29/09/2021 09:48

My friend had GD and baby was expected to be 9lb+, she was induced a week early and was 6lb 11oz!

lanthanum · 29/09/2021 09:52

Our NCT teacher showed us silhouettes of a 6lb and 10lb baby, superimposed. The head and shoulders (which are the widest parts) were pretty much the same. 9lb isn't that huge - might it be that they're just preparing you for the possibility that a c-section might be necessary? Hopefully now the gestational diabetes is under control, the growth won't be quite so much.

LemonKitten · 29/09/2021 09:52

I had GD and my daughter was 8lb 11.5oz - classed as a big baby. I gave birth naturally, well, with pethidine and gas and air - it was never suggested I had a c section, but that was nearly 30 years ago.

My second was born by epidural and was 6lbs 2oz - can you ask for an epidural?

ToadstoolBubbleMaker · 29/09/2021 09:53

Baby 1 predicted to be 'a good size' (measuring 2 weeks ahead) was 11lbs at 40wks exactly. Was 59cm with positional talipes from being squashed in.

Baby 2 predicted to be enormous (measuring 6 weeks ahead) was 8lbs9oz at 39wks exactly.

Baby 3 is predicted at 50th centile and is being delivered next week at 39wks - expecting somewhere in the 9lbs region but really don't know!

I don't think a 9lb prediction is reason enough to go for a C-section if you don't want one. Plenty of good sized babies are delivered around that size without any problems.

Brollywasntneededafterall · 29/09/2021 09:55

Ds was 9-3..easier than my 6lb ones!!

MindyStClaire · 29/09/2021 09:55

Mine were always big, don't remember any predicted weights, but they were big. They were 9lb 7oz and 9lb 12oz at birth, which was no surprise to anyone.

Beamur · 29/09/2021 09:57

Midwife suggested that DD would be big.
No GD.
She was 9lb 10oz.
Cesarian delivery. Post delivery my community midwife looked at her and said it was a good job she was delivered that way as she had wide shoulders!

Floralnomad · 29/09/2021 09:58

My first was predicted large and was 10lb4oz , no GD and I had a vaginal delivery albeit with complications afterwards ( for me ) . Second was also predicted large but was actually 7lb 13oz and I had an elective section which was IMO a much better way to do things .

BigGreen · 29/09/2021 09:58

My baby was even bigger than expected, and he arrived at 39 weeks. I'd take the section personally. I was booked for induction at 40 weeks which was the earliest I could persuade them to do it!

noblegreenk · 29/09/2021 09:59

DD was predicted to be a 9-10lb baby. She was 6lb 5oz.

Lemonlemon88 · 29/09/2021 10:02

I would request induction over c section.

Pleasedontputthatthere · 29/09/2021 10:02

Mine was 8lb 15oz and was an easier birth than my 7lb one.

TheNinny · 29/09/2021 10:09

Predicted 9lb 6 and she was 9lb 2. No c-section. I’m surprised they are pressing for section at this weight. I raised the possibility as I was scared and got told no by Consultant unless a pressing medical reason (being big wasn’t one apparently) and that they don’t like to do it electively for first baby 🤷‍♀️

TheNinny · 29/09/2021 10:11

They did induce me on due date though

Thebig3 · 29/09/2021 10:13

My first was predicted to be small and she was only 5lb 1oz (induced 4 weeks early)

2nd was told he was measuring big and he was 9lb 13oz 10 days over and natural birth.

3rd was measuring big, they predicted at 39 weeks that he would be 9lb. He was born via c section 3 days later and was 9lb 3oz.

I'm surprised they are pushing for a section for a possible 9 pounder. My son was 9.5 lbs and I have to say giving birth to him was far easier than my daughter who was 7.2.
ODFOx · 29/09/2021 10:17

My first was predicted 8lb, was born at 42+2 weighing 4lb 11oz.
This was a midwife prediction though, not based on scans.

MargaretThursday · 29/09/2021 10:17

I had a "small for dates" nearly 7lb-er a week early.

The Gp said to me that the estimates on size are "normally accurate within 2lb" ie not at all.

However with diabetes, you are likely to have a bigger baby. However bigger babies aren't necessarily harder to get out.

Spindrifting · 29/09/2021 10:20

Just under 8 and a half pounds, but he was born at 42 and a half weeks.

SheABitSpicyToday · 29/09/2021 10:20

They won’t do a section until 39 weeks when he will be well over 10 pounds by their predictions which is why they want to do a planned section. But I would rather have him earlier at 37 weeks naturally if I can. But at the same time, is a planned section better than an ending up with an emergency one? I really don’t know what to do.

My friends mum was told he was huge. They induced her at 34ish weeks (this was back in the 80s). He was 4lb something Blush
I guess scans weren't very accurate then!

FirstTimeMommy2021 · 29/09/2021 10:24

I was told he was measuring big they said he would at least be an 8lbs baby. He was 6lbs 9oz had to go out and buy tiny baby stuff. So don't worry they get it so wrong!

Also my friend was induced early they said he wasn't growing but he came out 9lbs!!

How do they get it so wrong!?

Crazycrazylady · 29/09/2021 10:25

Two 9.13 babies here! No suggestion of cs either although I would have pushed for induction on my second rather than going ten over if he hadn't arrived in his due date anyway

Caspianberg · 29/09/2021 10:28

Ds was 8.8lb. No issues, and short labour
