If you were predicted to have a giant baby, how big were they when born?

I was told my baby is already 6.5 pounds at 32 weeks! They reckon by 37 weeks he’s going to be well over 9pounds and are pushing for a csection. I have gestational diabetes which I’m now taking meds for so hoping that will slow him down a bit but I really really don’t want a csection if I can help it and want to see about induction at 37 weeks.

My daughter was predicted to be big but she was 7 pounds at 37+5.

What would you do in my situation?

I was measured at 34 weeks as having a 6lb4oz baby and he came out at 10lbs, vaginally with a little help from forceps and episiotomy. I was induced on my due date due to his size

TAKESNOSHITSHIRLEY · 29/09/2021 21:28

i went massive from practically day 1. he was always weeks ahead of growth to the weeks i was.
i even had a few rows as they were convinced he was conceived before i said he was but as he was a fertility treatment baby and as i found out at 2 and half weeks i knew when

at 32 weeks he was "apparently" 9lb already and 20 inches

he came 8 days late at 11lb 10oz and 29 inches, yes 29 inches with enormous feet

he was massive from birth and just went up and up

hes 11 now and 5ft4 and 11 st and size mens 8 feet

weegiemum · 29/09/2021 21:29

My first was 9lb12oz and a ventouse. My mum had big babies so 8 was pretty sure I would too.

Second was 9lb3oz at 10 days early, so glad he came when he did!

Third I was tested for GD as I had a lot of infections and with history of big babies. Due to other reasons she was induced at 36+6 and was already 7lb15oz.

Sleepyteach · 29/09/2021 21:39

I had GD and was induced at 39 weeks, DD was preceded to be 9lbs 4 and was born 8lbs 9oz, not a massive difference but not quite as big as originally thought. Her head was as massive as they predicted though!! 😂 I was offered induction or c section at my 38 week appt but I could have waited to see if things happened on their own, it was mainly offered because I was getting really anxious about how big she was.

helpthewhos · 29/09/2021 21:42

I was told DS2 would be something over 11lb, he was actually 9lb, considerable smaller than my first who was 9lb 11oz. If the scans were accurate he hardly grew at all in the last 10 weeks or so. But actually, baby was fine and only a little big, its just that growth scans are hugely inaccurate, especially the late ones.

Also, 9lb 11oz DS1 was back to back - he was an emergency c-section because of combination of size and bad position meaning he got stuck.

elliejjtiny · 29/09/2021 22:13

Ds3 was going to be huge according to the drs, at least 10lbs. I said I thought he would be 8lb 11oz or 12oz, similar to his older brothers. He was 8lb 12oz Grin.

I was huge with dc4 because I had polyhydramnios. Most non medical people I know were shocked when I had a 7lb 2oz baby. Most of the weight was in his head as he had hydrocephalus. He was only wearing 5lb baby clothes when he was born. More than one of my sons friends mums said they thought I would have twins and the many scans had missed one.

Claireshh · 29/09/2021 22:35

I had GD in both pg’s. Induced at 38 weeks with first two days later emergency c-section. She was 8lbs 8oz. My next was a planned section at 38 weeks. He was 9lbs 9oz. As you probably know GD can lead to complications. If they are suggesting a c section I would be tempted to go with it. My planned section was really calm and quite magical. My recovery was straight forward too.

Bloodylovecheese · 29/09/2021 22:39

@discombobulatedonion

My son was predicted to be about 9 lbs, he was actually 6lb 3oz, and was born at exactly 39 weeks. He couldn’t even fit in “first size” clothes he was so small.
Exactly the same as me! ... apparently my bump was all fluid 🤣🤣
PooWillyNameChange · 29/09/2021 22:40

I'm 5'5 and slight of build and delivered a 9lb9oz baby vaginally with no issues.

At 36 weeks they told me my bump was too small so referred me for a scan. At the scan they said he was well over 99th centile and going to be humongous. I birthed him at 42 weeks and he was large but not a sumo wrestler. Turned out he was very long. The midwife made a joke about him coming out being like when magicians pull a neverending string of flags from their sleeve Grin

SheABitSpicyToday · 30/09/2021 10:39

Midwife had a good feel of him this morning and days he feels like a term baby already Sad

Going to be a section isn’t it.

Do what they advise. I was predicted average amd so tried for a vag. Baby was 10lb and had shoulder dystocia.

Porcupineintherough · 30/09/2021 12:05

Sorry OP I know that's not what you wanted. It is ultimately your decision of course and they can never be sure of the size (although Id trust a midwife having a feel over a scan). But there can be a real downside to vaginally birthing very large babies (incontinence, even stress incontinence rather than the full blown works, is really not much fun - and it gets worse as you age also).

ATieLikeRichardGere · 30/09/2021 12:12

I was told “small” baby, my friend was induced due to “huge” baby - they were both about the same size in mid 7lb range.

sasparilla1 · 30/09/2021 12:16

I measured big all the way through with dc4, and was only crutches from 20 weeks with spd/pgd. I could have been induced at 40 weeks but I didn't want to be so they did a growth scan and he measured 9lb. When he was born 10 days later, he measure 10lb! He was born naturally with no mention of a cs.

PileOfBooks · 30/09/2021 13:19

Of course you can find people who were the "exception" to the rule, especially on the internet. But I would follow medical advice.

How about you start another thread on planned c sections and ask for positive stories and/or hints and tips from people? They can be fantastic calm birthing experiences and it is worth focusing on tbd good rather than the fear x

Rainbowsew · 30/09/2021 13:34

GD here and predicted over 9lb he 8 lb 2oz

PinkSkiesAtNight · 30/09/2021 13:41

I was told my DD was big, no mention of a C-section ever, she was 10lb 2oz. It was a hard birth but not a difficult one. I had a small episiotomy (not UK), but I would much rather that than a full on C-section unless it was absolutely necessary. I'd stick to your instincts and go for an induction if possible

KnottyKnitting · 30/09/2021 13:59

I was told my baby was 7 and a half lb when I was 35 weeks and that they gain half a lb a week from then on and that she might be 10lbs. She was born to term at 8lb 3oz. Someone told me that the estimates for big babies are often inaccurate.

Bagelsandbrie · 30/09/2021 14:13

I was told my dd was about 10lbs at 34 weeks so I was induced then… when she came out she was 7lbs! Shock

Winkytiddles · 30/09/2021 14:43

Scan at 36 weeks indicated DD 8lb 8oz at that point. Delivered vaginally at 40+5 weighing 10lb 8oz.

Hospital wouldn't allow a water birth due to predicted size and risk of shoulder dystocia creating an emergency that couldn't be dealt with efficiently in a birthing pool. Other than that no-one seemed too worried and I wasn't pushed to have a C-section (although this was 11 years ago next week Smile)

Jujujuly · 30/09/2021 15:11

I had a growth scan at 36 weeks because my bump was measuring small, and lo and behold they found a huge baby! They tested me for GD because she was off the charts massive (I think 7.5lbs, over 100th centile) and it was borderline, but results are inaccurate that late on anyway so they treated me as if I had it. The midwives kept telling me the scan was probably wrong and she felt small if anything, and I did have a really neat bump so it was weird. My first child was 9lb (at 42 weeks) and an easy birth so I was confident I’d be fine. I went into labour day before my due date and baby turned out to be 9lb exactly - which is exactly what the scan had predicted. I had a great water birth though!

MrsDThomas · 30/09/2021 15:59

DS was 3 weeks early at 9lb 1oz.

Im only 5ft 2 and quite petite. I looked terrible!

Amz6219 · 30/09/2021 16:08

The concern with GD isn't necessarily that they're big overall, but AC is usually large and the shoulder dystocia risk is higher

I had GD with my son and was induced at 38 weeks (was measuring over 97th centile) - 2 day labour, not budging, so EMCS.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing and if I'd had the benefit of it at the time I would've gone for ELCS over induction personally

GD again (currently 37+2) and baby AC over 97th again but already booked for ELCS so i'm just counting down the days now :)

LadyOfTheFlowers · 30/09/2021 16:09

After DS2 being 10lb12.5 I was put under consultant led care for subsequent 2 pregs, despite me telling them I could feel the baby was much smaller.

I was subjected to scaremongering and lots of scans with DS3. "He will be over 11lbs" they said.
I kept insisting he was much smaller than DS2 had been. Consultant asked me why I was bothering him and his team if I could feel my baby was smaller - I told him I didn't know why I had to come to hospital for every checkup. Hmm It wasn't my idea.

DS3 was my smallest baby at 8lb12 and 4 days late

DD was then 8lb14

SmellyOldOwls · 30/09/2021 16:14

I had GD and my baby was predicted to be huge, had her at 39 weeks and she was 7lb 4.

With your GD though I would go for the ELCS, or induction at least. It's not all about size - GD can damage your placenta and cause all sorts of bother.
