If you were predicted to have a giant baby, how big were they when born?

I was told my baby is already 6.5 pounds at 32 weeks! They reckon by 37 weeks he’s going to be well over 9pounds and are pushing for a csection. I have gestational diabetes which I’m now taking meds for so hoping that will slow him down a bit but I really really don’t want a csection if I can help it and want to see about induction at 37 weeks.

My daughter was predicted to be big but she was 7 pounds at 37+5.

What would you do in my situation?

They said DS was going to be just over 9lb. He was 11lb 1oz at 39.4 weeks. I wouldn't necessarily believe them in your case though. My DD was 9lb 3 and I could just feel that he was significantly bigger.

Stroan · 29/09/2021 12:27

With DD, she was predicted to be big at around 34 weeks and they said they would induce slightly early. At 37 weeks they predicted she would 'only' be 8lbs at birth so decided there was no need for early induction. Was induced on my due date because I was struggling to breathe, 2 days later had a 10lb 4oz baby with shoulder dystocia.

DC2 was born by ELCS and it was wonderful.

ElleStartingOver · 29/09/2021 12:27

11.5 lbs.

No c-section but it was an assisted delivery.

SheABitSpicyToday · 29/09/2021 12:27

Yes through growth scans. He’s off the chart for all his measurements.

Yubaba · 29/09/2021 12:28

DS1 was predicted to be 8lb and he was 9lb5oz and DS2 was predicted to be 10lb and he was 7lb13oz.
I had both of them at home with just gas and air.

Justcashnosweets · 29/09/2021 12:29

My daughter was 9lb 8oz, but we all have big babies in our family so it was no surprise 😊

RandomWordGenerator · 29/09/2021 12:36

@SheABitSpicyToday

I think the reason they push a section is because GD babies tend to store a lot of fat around their neck and shoulders and are at an increased risk of shoulder dystosia.
Yes I think you need to look at this from a GD perspective rather than just other non-GD giant baby predictions that turned out to be wrong.

Certainly GD can make the baby bigger than you would naturally grow, which adds to other potential GD complications.

danadas · 29/09/2021 12:38

My youngest was off the charts and after multiple growth scans was encouraged to deliver at 37 weeks. I refused and he was born at 42+ weeks weighing 7lb 10oz. He would have been tiny five weeks earlier. God know what they were measuring.

grey12 · 29/09/2021 12:39

@Anycolourwilldo you're right but then a lot of women birth big babies naturally and with no complications. And a lot of women have a lot of problems birthing small babies. Sooo it doesn't really matter!!!! I suppose if you're measuring big you should avoid a home birth..... but if you're at the hospital hopefully you'll get the help you need regardless

Measuring fetuses is obviously not an exact science so far. But we shouldn't be scaring women so much about these things

SheABitSpicyToday · 29/09/2021 12:42

I also have extreme spd and my doctor said this can massively impact my recovery from a section.

Merryoldgoat · 29/09/2021 12:46

Both measured significantly large from early. Both had femur length off the chart.

Baby 1 was 11lb and 60cm
Baby 2 was 9lb 6 and 57cm

Both CS for reasons not relating to size, although the biggest just couldn’t engage owing to the size of him (according to midwife). He was in 3-6 month clothes by 3 weeks.

Both are much taller than their peers at 8 and 3.

autumnkate · 29/09/2021 12:47

They said he would be big and he was 11lb 5 oz at 39 weeks. He was huuuge.

Merryoldgoat · 29/09/2021 12:47

@SheABitSpicyToday

I also have extreme spd and my doctor said this can massively impact my recovery from a section.
I had severe SPD with both of mine and recovery from CS was entirely unaffected.

Why do they say that? I’ve not heard that at all and I saw a LOT of professionals throughout my pregnancies.

Porcupineintherough · 29/09/2021 12:48

10lb 8oz.Thankfully he was my second.

SmallGreenStripes · 29/09/2021 12:49

Predicted 10 lbs at 41 weeks
Was 9lbs 7

Elective section

Porcupineintherough · 29/09/2021 12:51

Oh and in your position Id strogly consider a c section. I needed forceps and there was quite a bit of damage.

Merryoldgoat · 29/09/2021 12:52

@Bear2014

I agree about ‘feeling’ the size. Even though he was my first I could tell DS1 was big. I felt every movement and he felt like he was stuffed in there.

Even though the second measured similarly I could feel he was significantly smaller.

CaptainChannel · 29/09/2021 12:53

My second was apparently going to be a whopper but was only 7lb 14 at 39+6

elbea · 29/09/2021 12:55

My baby was measuring to be 10 lbs 6oz, she was 6lbs 13. I’d take it with a pinch of salt.

auldmaw · 29/09/2021 12:57

I was told I was having a 'huge baby' to the extent one midwife suggested I might require an early delivery. He was 6Ib 10oz at full term. The issue seems to have been a lot of guesswork around his measurements when they couldn't get it exact.

BigMamaBigBaby · 29/09/2021 12:58

Predicted 9lbs. Weighed 11lbs 2.5oz.

Namechanger0800 · 29/09/2021 12:59

Induced 2 weeks early which resulted in c-sec - baby was 8lb3 not the 10lb plus they predicted at 38 weeks. I'm sure the induction failed because she just wasn't ready to come

Ahhhhhbisto · 29/09/2021 13:00

I measured big with my first, had a vaginal delivery he was 8lb 13.

Measured small with my second, growth scan showed him as average....he was 10lb 1 and a far easier vaginal birth than my first!

BorderlineHappy · 29/09/2021 13:02

I was told on my first he was measuring small he was born at 8 lb 12.
2nd was 8 Lb 10
3rd was 9 lb 1
4th was 9 lb 13
5 th was 8 lb 12 I had gd on him and was induced early.
They do get it wrong.

AliasGrape · 29/09/2021 13:02

Predicted over 9lbs 'probably at least 10'.

She was just shy of 7lbs at 40 weeks exactly.
