Just back from putting air in the car tyres and the queue into the forecourt for fuel was ridiculous.

Appreciate it doesn't help that the news bulletins start with" BP closes some petrol stations" and that nobody hears beyond this to "Asda, Morrisons and other supermarkets are saying they have no problems, as have other petrol companies.”

Just stop it.

Sofiegiraffe · 24/09/2021 15:24

@Iamthewombat

My confusion was more about the fact that there is a limit to the amount of fuel everyone can fit in their cars. Once they are full, they can't buy anymore

Tell that to the plonkers filling up multiple Jerry cans.

Well that is bloody stupid. Are people really doing that?! Ffs I need to fill up later as I'm on the red. Is this the fuckwittery I'm going to have to contend with?!

Joystir59 · 24/09/2021 15:25

I live in a place where fuel supplies come a long way by road, and fuel often runs short anyway. Happy days! At least during lockdown it was cheap and plentiful.

MyPatronusIsACat · 24/09/2021 15:25

@Ontheblink

My car has 5 miles left on it ( not sure how accurate) the nearest station is 0.9 miles away but with huge queues, WTAF, I have tried 4 time to fill up today but they are either closed or with Mike long queues. I am actually so pissed off!
This is taking it from one extreme to the other though. Leaving 'filling up' til your car has 5 miles left on it is just stupid.

It's like these people who go to the pharmacist for their meds, and scream and throw a tantrum when the pharmacy have to order it in as they have run out - and it won't be there for an extra 1 day.

It's madness to let something you need in your life, to run so low, that if there is a delay for a single day, you are fucked.

As I said earlier, and many others have said, the media are a lot to blame for this. If they had said fuck-all, no-one would be panicking, and we would all be fine.

MyPatronusIsACat · 24/09/2021 15:26

@Chumleymouse

Hope I run out of fuel …… won’t be going to work ………bonus 🙂
Great if you get paid for being off, or you don't need the money. (One of those 2 clearly applies to you.)

People who can't get to work as they have no petrol, and can't afford to lose the money are fucked though. No 'bonus' for them. Hmm

MyPatronusIsACat · 24/09/2021 15:26

@BiteyCatII

Stellaris22.

Im totally reliant on my car. The bus service in our city is so dire and getting more so by the day. If I had to rely on it to get to work I’d be fired. It’s a daily occurrence for multiple cancellations, ridiculous delays and as a result it often takes over 2 hours to get somewhere it should take 25 mins to get to. And that’s on a rammed bus because the cancellations and delays mean massive queues. It’s a bloody nightmare. Our council is running a competition for members of the public to suggest ways to make the bus service better. There’s a prize of 2k for the winner. It’s such a joke you couldn’t make it up 🙈. I’d love to get rid of my car which is old and rusty and use public transport but it’s not a realistic option right now.

My nearest petrol station was also sold out of petrol when I drove past at 10 am.

Funny how, despite lots of posters commenting and challenging her, that poster @Stellaris22 hasn't come back to answer to her rude and judgemental and ludicrous comment, about how stupid some people are for relying on heir car, and how SHE only uses her ONCE A WEEK! Hmm
Anjo2011 · 24/09/2021 15:26

Just filled up because I needed to, busier than normal but no queue and went straight to pump. Diesel and super unleaded were empty but regular unleaded was fine. It was Esso garage. I’m in east of england

womaninatightspot · 24/09/2021 15:26

@Stellaris22

It's stupid and highlights how over reliant people are on their cars.

We use ours once a week and won't be rushing out to the petrol station anytime soon.

Why do you have a car if you only use it once a week surely car club or something would be better for the environment/ cheaper?

A lot of people have no choice to use their cars everyday and are reliant on then - For Work.
MyPatronusIsACat · 24/09/2021 15:29

Exactly @womaninatightspot Having a car and only using it once a week (if that's even true!) Wink is ridiculous.

That poster is clearly not coming back to answer to her stupid comments though. Probably realises how ridiculous her comments were, and is embarrassed.

She should be!

TheGrumpyGoat · 24/09/2021 15:30

Our second car only got used once a week… so we sold it. It’s a bit crazy to have a car just sitting on your drive 6 days out of 7.

PurpleDaisies · 24/09/2021 15:31

Why would it be better for the environment? Surely it would be the same amount of total car usage but with added miles driving it between the people using it’s houses?

mogsrus · 24/09/2021 15:31

You just watch how much a litre will be by this time next week,you will be going to work just to earn money to go to work, people do not learn,

Justbecauseofit · 24/09/2021 15:33

Courtesy car today. My actual car is in for MoT and I’m dreading it because it’s running on fumes and I will have no choice to fill up when I pick it up.

Unfortunately, before I pick it up, I’m going to have to top the courtesy car up with the fiver petrol I have used today.

I’m going to look like one of these morons twice tonight aren’t I? Sad

Suitcaseseverywhere · 24/09/2021 15:34

I have a car. Some weeks I don’t use it. On average it’s used once a week.

I live rurally ( bus in and out of village every day - one in morning for school kids and one in afternoon to bring them home).

I am disabled.

I access hospital appointments (taxi would be £70-80 each way - have had to pay that before - local transport service won’t take me as is too far) plus I go for my groceries (11 miles to nearest town).

I also use the car to travel to see friends (11 miles to train station).

I need car in case of emergency so I can transport myself.

It’s not ridiculous to have a car and only use it once a week in every scenario.

Claudethecat · 24/09/2021 15:35

@Iamthewombat

I remember one time when there was a spate of petrol panic buying there were some nasty accidents as some of the numbskulls filling up cans had no idea how to store petrol safely.

Was this the muppet in Derby who filled three wheelie bins with petrol, stored in his house? Then the petrol dissolved the base of the bin, contaminating the entire row of houses and requiring them to be evacuated because of the explosion risk?

Yeah, that one rings a bell!

Less cars made I guess.
Suitcaseseverywhere · 24/09/2021 15:38

There’s no car club here.

Itsnotallaboutyoubaby · 24/09/2021 15:40

It’s the sodding media

DottyHarmer · 24/09/2021 15:40

I couldn’t believe it this morning: the main road completely blocked both ways with people queuing for the petrol station. I had the opportunity to eyeball the queuers and I would say 99% were Victor Meldrew types. I remember some years ago there was some petrol scare and fil queued for an hour and a half to buy £2 of petrol. I really think that some people need something to do…. Or they enjoy the drama.

OvaHere · 24/09/2021 15:40

Just collected DS from college and been past several petrol stations. No queues. It's busy-ish as are the roads but no more than expected on Friday aft. This is north of England.

QuestionEverythingBaby · 24/09/2021 15:40

Thank goodness I filled up last night. Just driven past 3 petrol stations, 2 had queues going around the block, the 3rd (Esso) had all pumps covered up.
People are bloody crazy Angry.

Xiaoxiong · 24/09/2021 15:43

@Joystir59 I'm the same now. Every time I dip below a certain level of supplies eg. 2L of UHT milk, 6 rolls of toilet paper, 4 tins of tomatoes in the cupboard I add another one to the weekly shop. We had 4 online shops cancel one after another last March and April and went 6 weeks living solely off the contents of the freezer and my (small) Brexit stash for which I was so, so thankful. I've been slowly building it up again over the past 18 months.

DoctorSnortles · 24/09/2021 15:49

@Stellaris22

How nice for you.

I live in the countryside and have no other means of getting to work (or anywhere else).I’m not just driving around using petrol up for shits and giggles.

WhoWants2Know · 24/09/2021 15:53

I do wonder how much of panic buying is fuelled by actual shortages and how much by media/social media.

Like people who have never used a product suddenly need to buy loads when they hear it's scarce.

Joystir59 · 24/09/2021 15:53

All those criticising car users here- I live in a small rural community and use my car for all sorts of neighbourly trips- tip runs, redistributing bagged up horse manure, hospital trips, trips to the vet, shared pleasure trips out. All sorts. So get stuffed.
