Just back from putting air in the car tyres and the queue into the forecourt for fuel was ridiculous.

Appreciate it doesn't help that the news bulletins start with" BP closes some petrol stations" and that nobody hears beyond this to "Asda, Morrisons and other supermarkets are saying they have no problems, as have other petrol companies.”

Just stop it.

Like people who have never used a product suddenly need to buy loads when they hear it's scarce
Quite unlikely to be true of petrol!

JesusIsAnyNameFree · 24/09/2021 16:08

Down to a quarter of a tank if even that and commute 40 miles a day, and the little lawn mower can is empty too. I don't think I can take the looks I'll probably get rocking up with the can 😐 also can't take a messy looking lawn though.. I should have gone and filled up the can last weekend when I realised. Fuck sake.

itsgettingwierd · 24/09/2021 16:10

I was at work today having general chit chat about our plans.

I mentioned I needed petrol because ds has various swimming stuff at the weekend.

Then I get told good luck with that.

FFS it's madness out there. People Quinn for petrol they probably don't need for weeks. That makes thing worse.

I'm just hoping that when I have to go out later I can actually fill up. I'll be happy just to do £20 worth.

My issue is I filled up on 1st September as I always fill my tank on payday. I'm genuinely in need and if I can't get any this weekend I'm buggered Sad

MyPatronusIsACat · 24/09/2021 16:18

@WhoWants2Know

I do wonder how much of panic buying is fuelled by actual shortages and how much by media/social media.

Like people who have never used a product suddenly need to buy loads when they hear it's scarce.

A bit of a mix I think.

A)

Some people actually needing petrol as it's genuinely running low in their car..

And B)

People already having half to two thirds left, but topping it up to full 'just in case...'

If anyone is in the second group, they are quite within their rights. It's a free country. If someone had the tank 70% full and it only took ten quid's worth to fill it, that's their prerogative if they wanted to do put that ten quid's worth in.

@Joystir59

All those criticising car users here- I live in a small rural community and use my car for all sorts of neighbourly trips- tip runs, redistributing bagged up horse manure, hospital trips, trips to the vet, shared pleasure trips out. All sorts. So get stuffed.
My job involves going from site to site meeting clients and I drive on average 45-50k per year. My "over-reliance" on my car literally keeps a roof over our heads...
prettyteapotsplease · 24/09/2021 16:22

Luckily I put petrol in at the weekend but there've been reports locally that the petrol station at a local supermarket has had very long queues, so much so that the police have had to go on traffic duty to dissuade motorists to not block the road. When people are told not to panic it seems to have the opposite affect.

FooFighter99 · 24/09/2021 16:22

SO glad I've got an electric car Grin

Winnona · 24/09/2021 16:24

TheGrumpyGoat · 24/09/2021 16:25

I’m just glad I filled up on Wednesday (I was running on fumes) before the world went insane. Again.

the80sweregreat · 24/09/2021 16:28

People don't trust the government, so if they say ' don't panic' , then they will.
Shapps was on the tv / radio waffling on : he always looks like he finds it all a big joke anyway and doesn't inspire me not to want to fill the car up! I'm sure it'll get resolved , but it's just another thing that's been messed up.

exactly. ^

Unfortunately, the vast majority of people don't live in an episode of Coronation Street, where the pubs, shops, car maintenance garage, hairdressers, restaurants/cafes, factory, everyone's workplace, GP surgery, the train station, the tram stop, the funeral parlour, the flower shop, the bookies, the bus stop, the schools, a cab firm, and all your family and friends, are all within a 10 to 15 minute walk!

Most of us live in the real world, where MOST of the above is NOT walking distance.

Fuel it? They bloody started it. It's time they are held to account for this and all the other panic's they've caused. Bunch of arseholes. Will they be held to account when an ambulance doesn't get to someone since it was stuck in a queue trying to get fuel?

Well if we believe the news and we clearly do, hence the panic buying, other EU countries have similar shortages of drivers as us….

Not sure what lack of vet appointments has to do with Brexit…..

Natsku · 24/09/2021 16:58
@HCHQ

Yep, half hour wait from start to finish (queueing, filling, and paying) at Sainsburys this morning. I had to fill. I had only 10-15% of a tankful left, and I am going away on Sunday for a few days, so was panicking a bit. I wasn't gonna fill til Sunday morning, but decided to do it this morning. Half the pumps were already empty/out of order too.

It is hard to NOT get swept up in the panic though. I wish the media would just not say anything, as it whips people up into a frenzy and a panic, CAUSING panic buying/queues!

Also, it's got fuck all to do with Brexit before the Brexit bashing comes along. It's an issue all over Europe. As is the food shortages.

@FreeBritnee

The thing that intrigued me was I thought everyone (bar me) how had electric cars and WFH. I wouldn’t have thought there was such a demand for petrol as there once was. But obviously I’m wrong!

Why did you think that? I don't know a single soul who has a electric car, or who intends on getting one anytime soon.
Where else in Europe is there crazy queues for petrol? And I've not noticed any food shortages in my part of Europe so its not all over Europe at least, where else are there shortages?

Sommernacht89 · 24/09/2021 17:09

@Tableflowerss "not sure what vet shortage has to do with Brexit". Eh,have you not. heard of staff shortage everywhere?I really dont know what needs to happen for the Brexiteers to realise they voted for a lie!we all knew,they are not the sharpest knifes in the box😀.

the80sweregreat · 24/09/2021 17:10

The thing that winds me up more is if this was a Labour Party in power with all these non stop problems my tory loving neighbours and family would not be laughing about it, they would be running down the government and ranting on about the incompetence of them all and how it was a ' communist plot' or some such and taking us back to the 1970s !

Notthemessiah · 24/09/2021 17:14

I never get why people who do this get called idiots or stupid. Over cautious definitely, selfish possibly, but they aren't stupid.

Stupid is hearing the government go 'don't panic' and not expecting a large number of their fellow citizens to do exactly that, then not being able to buy any of what everyone else has just panic bought.

Sparklingbrook · 24/09/2021 17:20

There was a queue onto the road at all 4 petrol stations I passed on my way home. So there probably will be a fuel shortage here by tomorrow.

Blossomtoes · 24/09/2021 17:27

Will they be held to account when an ambulance doesn't get to someone since it was stuck in a queue trying to get fuel?

Ambulances have dedicated fuel supplies.

JustLyra · 24/09/2021 17:31

@Blossomtoes

They use the local petrol station here. There’s a sign up letting people know that the owners will allow emergency vehicles to take priority in the queue.
BackInBlackAgain · 24/09/2021 17:55

I filled up today, but today is my payday and I always fill up on payday. I watched the news last night and told DP we were going to struggle to get fuel today, he told me I was being silly.

The car has around 20 miles of fuel and I need my car for work. I used a local station which charges a fortune but was in and out in 10 minutes, when I left they were queueing down the road.

I blame the sodding media,, it was a non story that they turned into a bloody catastrophe.
