Just back from putting air in the car tyres and the queue into the forecourt for fuel was ridiculous.

Appreciate it doesn't help that the news bulletins start with" BP closes some petrol stations" and that nobody hears beyond this to "Asda, Morrisons and other supermarkets are saying they have no problems, as have other petrol companies.”

Just stop it.

I don’t want to have to change a perfectly good car that is drive 100% and if I had a full electric I’ve nowhere to charge it. Why would I change?

MyPatronusIsACat · 24/09/2021 12:39

@HCHQ

Yep, half hour wait from start to finish (queueing, filling, and paying) at Sainsburys this morning. I had to fill. I had only 10-15% of a tankful left, and I am going away on Sunday for a few days, so was panicking a bit. I wasn't gonna fill til Sunday morning, but decided to do it this morning. Half the pumps were already empty/out of order too.

It is hard to NOT get swept up in the panic though. I wish the media would just not say anything, as it whips people up into a frenzy and a panic, CAUSING panic buying/queues!

Also, it's got fuck all to do with Brexit before the Brexit bashing comes along. It's an issue all over Europe. As is the food shortages.

@FreeBritnee

The thing that intrigued me was I thought everyone (bar me) how had electric cars and WFH. I wouldn’t have thought there was such a demand for petrol as there once was. But obviously I’m wrong!

Why did you think that? I don't know a single soul who has a electric car, or who intends on getting one anytime soon.

MyPatronusIsACat · 24/09/2021 12:40

@stellaris22

It's stupid and highlights how over reliant people are on their cars.

We use ours once a week and won't be rushing out to the petrol station anytime soon.

Bully for you if you only use the car once a week. Hmm You can look down your nose at people, but many people rely on a car for work, because of varying/awkward/different shift patterns, and dreadful, expensive public transport - or NO public transport. Some people live rural, and have little or no public transport, and some have mobility problems/disabilities and need a car.

But you pull up the ladder with your smug 'we only use our car once a week' mantra. It doesn't make you any better than anyone else though. Anyway, if you only use the car once a week, WTF is the point of having one? Confused

FreeBritnee · 24/09/2021 12:41

I literally just answered the same question upthread 🤭

Tangledtresses · 24/09/2021 12:41

Yup there's a queue at our petrol station too.... lots of vans though
They didn't have diesel for a week!
Next petrol station is over 10 miles away

Thecurliestwurly · 24/09/2021 12:41

There have been pumps closed at petrol stations all week though, so what do you expect? I you depend on your car for work (as many do) and the news is saying that there is shortages and potential for rationing, then of course people will fill up. They need to earn money.

It just goes to show that people don't trust that these issues will be sorted out and want to make sure they have fuel when they need it.

CityMumma78 · 24/09/2021 12:44

You don’t know if all of these people are panic buying or if they have a legitimate reason for wanting to get fuel… work, forthcoming hospital appointments etc!

ScatteredMama82 · 24/09/2021 12:48

My light was on this morning and I felt I had to explain that I did genuinely need diesel and wasn't panic buying! I also need to fill the jerry can for our little tractor but I will look like a panic buyer if I do that so I'll leave it for another day.

nottoday3000 · 24/09/2021 12:49

I know! Don't drive on any roads near a petrol garage it's a nightmare!

ScatteredMama82 · 24/09/2021 12:50

FWIW every pump at our local station was open and there were plenty cars there but no queue. It seems the good folk of rural shropshire aren't panicking just yet.

MyPatronusIsACat · 24/09/2021 12:51

@CityMumma78

Well exactly. The vast majority of people will be buying fuel for the same reason they buy food! Because they bloody need it. Confused

I am going away Sunday for a few days (will do around 150 miles in total.) But I would still have filled up anyway, because I was nearly out of fuel and I need my car...!!

PurpleDaisies · 24/09/2021 12:51

Rural Somerset has lost its collective head. There was almost a fight at the one I’ve just been to. Utter madness.

Joystir59 · 24/09/2021 12:52

Oh well, here we go again fuel getting pricy and scarce ditto food and also my energy company just went bust. Love this government. Not.

WeAreTheHeroes · 24/09/2021 12:52

I had to get petrol this morning in order to get to work and the local Tesco petrol station was rammed at 8.30am. There are usually a couple of cars at most. If people who don't need to fill up do then those who need it won't be able to and there will unnecessarily be shortages.

Spudlet · 24/09/2021 12:53

Not sure what the petrol situation is like around here as I don’t pass a station unless I make a special trip. We’re rural and we don’t have any public transport, so we do need to have fuel for the car…! I have a course on Sunday that is a good 40-60 minute drive away so hoping I have enough fuel to make it there and back. 😖

Joystir59 · 24/09/2021 12:54

I like to keep a full tank of petrol anyway. Call that stockpiling if you like. But filling a car with petrol isn't the same as stockpiling toilet rolls is it? Unless people are stacking filled fuel cans in their sheds. There's an idea..... I can't get a electric car cos nowhere to charge it- I don't have allocated parking.

NannyOggsward · 24/09/2021 12:55

I’ve had to go in as I’m the type that runs on fumes and hope and I need to pick up from a match, loads of people clearly sticking a bloody fiver in, I filled my £70+ Up slowly then sauntered in to buy crisps and drinks just to annoy everyone.

Because I’m a dick.

BrilloPaddy · 24/09/2021 12:57

You can't fix stupid.

Exactly. Fortunately, you can't kind of 'stockpile' petrol! So there should be enough for all really!!
takingmytimeonmyride · 24/09/2021 12:59

All the petrol stations in my town have huge queues, or closed. I put half a tank in on Monday when I needed to fill up, wishing I'd filled the tank now. I won't use the car unless I really need to and hope this is all over by next weekend when I'll probably need to get more petrol.

AndTime · 24/09/2021 13:00

I hadn't realised there was a shortage, Filled my car up last night as I do every pay day. For once I am ahead of the game!

DaphneDeloresMoorhead · 24/09/2021 13:01

Couldn't get any fuel today or yesterday
Brilliant fir my 60 mile daily commute to my 999 call taking job. Hopefully I'll get some tonight

MagentaRocks · 24/09/2021 13:01

Just filled up too as had less than a quarter of a tank. Queued for ages. There were lots of people clearly topping up a nearly full tank.

comfortablyfrumpy · 24/09/2021 13:03

Blinking heck. I'm really low and do actually need to fill up as have a long journey to do.
