Just back from putting air in the car tyres and the queue into the forecourt for fuel was ridiculous.

Appreciate it doesn't help that the news bulletins start with" BP closes some petrol stations" and that nobody hears beyond this to "Asda, Morrisons and other supermarkets are saying they have no problems, as have other petrol companies.”

Just stop it.

The fuel shortage in American states was a result of hurricane damage. As I understood it production was halted.

A bit different to 5 BP garages (nationwide) being closed.

Octopie · 24/09/2021 13:30

@Pinkandpink

If There is a shortage, why aren’t they putting a cap on what people are buying?
I don't know, it's ridiculous. Some people see a few photos in the newspapers and it spirals; people filling up more than they would normally and more of them which leads to places running out as people have been selfish, and further propells the notion that there are shortages.

Limit people to £20 each if they can't be trusted to be sensible.

I feel smug with my plug in hybrid 😁

theworldsbiggestcrocodile · 24/09/2021 13:31

Well I've left it too late as all the stations around us have either run out or have lines around the block. I've got a quarter of a tank to do the school run, pick up dd2 later and get her to an away match 40 miles away and back at 8am tomorrow. So that's going to be a bit of an issue Angry

OhDear2200 · 24/09/2021 13:31

Just filled up. Had 20miles left and have to do home visits for work.

I usually put half a tank in but I filled it up, purely so I don’t have to enter another station for a couple of weeks!

There isn't a shortage here, but a lack of drivers, which could be alleviated fairly quickly in the short term if the government did something.
Spudlet · 24/09/2021 13:32

I actually do cycle the school run. However, I can cycle 17 miles to my course on Sunday, carrying an A4 folder, textbook, notepad, pen, face mask and shield, antibacterial wipes, lunch, two bath sheets, three hand towels and a massage couch cover. I know. Such a lazy arse!

Spudlet · 24/09/2021 13:32

Can’t… I really can’t 🙄

chocolateorangeinhaler · 24/09/2021 13:32

@Xiaoxiong

FreeBritnee I actually just rented an electric car and it was delivered this morning - what timing Grin
Good luck when the electricity price hikes hit.
MissCruellaDeVil · 24/09/2021 13:33

I am super low on fuel but don't have time to sit in the queues! The garage near my work has closedConfused

Soubriquet · 24/09/2021 13:33

We did fill the tank today but we travel quite a bit

The petrol worker did say that they ran out of petrol the night before.

The queues were horrendous

Chocolatier9 · 24/09/2021 13:34

@FreeBritnee

Why did you think that?

Must just be where I live. Everyone I know now has either an electric or hybrid car. Bar me.

I can see how that happens. I was quite shocked when I read that only 48% WFH during lockdown. Where I live plus the media made me think that it was the majority of the working population doing that. So easy for one’s field of vision to narrow.

Who decided it was a good idea to broadcast the fuel issue in the first place!!

It was always going to go this way - we know this from last time.. and the time before that.

@Joystir59

Oh well, here we go again fuel getting pricy and scarce ditto food and also my energy company just went bust. Love this government. Not.
What's Russia playing silly buggers with gas supply got to do with bojo?
SingingCanary · 24/09/2021 13:37

My petrol light came on on my way to work this morning. Planning on using DH car over the weekend and hoping the panic will have died down by next week.

Problem is we will run out now because people aren’t buying in their usual pattern. Same reason we ran out of food when COVID started. Clearly, the panic buying idiots have learned nothing over the last 18 months!

Exactly! The media whipping everyone up into a frenzy has caused this.
the80sweregreat · 24/09/2021 13:37

I understand people wanting an electric car.
However, once millions and millions more people have one, the price of electricity will obviously go up and won't there be a shortage of it eventually?
People won't give up their cars that easily.

Octopie · 24/09/2021 13:37

The government earns a nice amount from petrol too, with prices rising quickly nothing like word of a shortage to get people buying buying buying!

Asleanna · 24/09/2021 13:38

It is seriously annoying. I bet half of them don't even 'need' their car for work. I use my car to commute (no other way of getting to work) and it's frustrating knowing everyone is panic buying petrol and whether or not I'll be able to get to work. Luckily I've got about half a tank, should be OK til middle of next week. By which time I am praying it's calmed down!

CraftyGin · 24/09/2021 13:38

I filled up this morning from 1/4 tank. I did not feel that I was stockpiling.

The thing about cars, is that you can only fill your tank. It's not like filling your shed with a year's supply of toilet paper.

Dunrovi · 24/09/2021 13:39

I bought fuel this morning but was genuinely running very low (kept taking short journeys and forgetting to fill up). Day to day, I could manage without the car for a week or two, but what if there was an emergency that needed me to drive to elderly parents or daughter at university in another city?

Why should I not buy fuel if it's there, when everyone else is going mad for it? It's kind of not like toilet rolls in that you can store any amount that space permits. You can only buy enough petrol to fill your tank. That's not being greedy.

TokyoSushi · 24/09/2021 13:40

I've just had to do a quick journey for work, but it's one that passes 6 petrol stations, all absolutely rammed and queuing down the road.
