Just back from putting air in the car tyres and the queue into the forecourt for fuel was ridiculous.

Appreciate it doesn't help that the news bulletins start with" BP closes some petrol stations" and that nobody hears beyond this to "Asda, Morrisons and other supermarkets are saying they have no problems, as have other petrol companies.”

Just stop it.

DH came home last night and said the queues at the petrol station he uses were crazy. He does 60 miles a day to work and back so genuinely needed to fill up. The petrol station concerned has put a post on Facebook this morning saying 'stop panic buying, we won't run out. Even if we can't get a delivery we have arrangements where we can go and collect in our own tanker from the refinery'. The refinery itself isn't that far away. Hopefully people will listen and stop buying when they don't need to. Queues cause their own problems as they spill out onto the main road.

Imnothereforthedrama · 24/09/2021 13:20

What is wrong with people honestly unless I’m low I don’t get petrol and I’m not changing now .
People don’t grasp how selfish they are and making situations 10 times worse . If they have to start rationing fuel so can only get so much .

DGRossetti · 24/09/2021 13:21

Are the same people telling us not to panic the same people who told us there would be no tax rises if we voted Tory ? And that the pension triple lock wasn't going to change ?

You can't really blame people for not trusting them can you. In fact, I'd say if you did trust them you're a bit short on critical thinking.

JesusIsAnyNameFree · 24/09/2021 13:22

@Stellaris22

It's stupid and highlights how over reliant people are on their cars.

We use ours once a week and won't be rushing out to the petrol station anytime soon.

I mean, some people have work to get to.
bigbluebus · 24/09/2021 13:22

I remember the time there really was a fuel shortage due to strikes. You could only get £10 of petrol at a time. Sounds like they'll need to bring in restrictions again (like they did with toilet rolls) if the idiots carry on.

chocolateorangeinhaler · 24/09/2021 13:23

It's the sodding media twisting the stories yet again.

Whoever's put this out as deliberately misleading should be charged with causing public outrage or whatever it's called.

Absolutely no need to scare people like that.

HarlanPepper · 24/09/2021 13:23

I was down to my last 20 miles so I filled up this morning. I wouldn't usually fill all the way up though - half a tank would be my standard, so as much as I scorn panic buyers, I have become part of the problem.

PurpleDaisies · 24/09/2021 13:23
@PurpleDaisies

My light is on. I’m worried people will think I’m panic buying when I actually need petrol.

@ilovesooty

You know you need to fill up. It doesn't matter what random strangers think.

Exactly this. I literally give zero fucks what ANYONE thinks of me filling my car with petrol. Why the hell would I? Confused It's not like I am rocking up with 100 green petrol cans, and robbing the pumps of way more fuel than I need!
I should have put “worried in a lighthearted way”. I don’t actually care what anyone thinks of me. Someone actually shouted at me for buying coffee rather than sprinting in and out at full pace. People have really lost it here.

@deadleaves

I used to be a bike-cycling bus-riding smug arse like this when I lived in the city. Now I live semi-rural with next to non-existent public transport I realise that many people have no choice but to rely on their cars.

ScumbagDave · 24/09/2021 13:24

Now you mention it, there was a huge queue at our local garage today as I drove past. I had no idea this was why!

Pinkandpink · 24/09/2021 13:24

If There is a shortage, why aren’t they putting a cap on what people are buying?

JedEye · 24/09/2021 13:25

I did wonder what the traffic queues were about as I passed the supermarket earlier. FFS here we go again!

Fuck 'em !!! You get what you need when you need it. Smile Flowers

SpindleWorld · 24/09/2021 13:26

Asda does have problems, in the sense that queues today at ours for fuel have blocked the road, and the entrance to Asda itself and other shops. I expect the police are there now as when we managed to get round it, men were out of cars and shouting at each other. It was quite scary stuff really.

Dollywilde · 24/09/2021 13:26

@Pinkandpink

I suspect that would just make people panic more, especially since the ‘shortage’ is entirely driven by the panic buying itself.
DumplingsAndStew · 24/09/2021 13:27

Isn't the last Friday of the month (today) pay day for many people?

Maybe some of these people would have been filling up anyway.

Applesonthelawn · 24/09/2021 13:27

Well we aren't entering the fray. Let them panic if they need to, I've long since given up thinking the masses are controllable. If it's not loo roll it's bath tubs full of petrol. Nuts.

PurpleDaisies · 24/09/2021 13:27

Fuck 'em !!! You get what you need when you need it.

Absolutely. My coffee light has come on because I was running on empty…

Tohaveandtohold · 24/09/2021 13:28

I need fuel though, nothing to do with the news.
Today is my pay day and that’s when I always fill my tank up for the next month. So I think DH will have to go and fill my tank up tonight even if he has to queue for it.

luckylavender · 24/09/2021 13:29

@HCHQ - that's such a condescending post. How can anyone trust this government?

TheRealMrsMorningstar · 24/09/2021 13:29

@PurpleDaisies

My light is on. I’m worried people will think I’m panic buying when I actually need petrol.
Same. I need my car to ferry dd1 around (she is disabled and we have endless appointments to do to). I don't normally leave my tank to get so low either.🤦‍♀️
DamnUserName21 · 24/09/2021 13:29

Yep, same in my area. Long, long queues outside multiple petrol stations.

SueSaid · 24/09/2021 13:29

Jesus op stop being so patronising 🙄

Perhaps tell the media to 'stop it'. It is all over the news and the newspapers that we're 'running on empty' so people will react to that hysteria, they have lives and commitments you see.

idontlikealdi · 24/09/2021 13:29

We've got 24 miles left, stupid to let it get that low, our two local stations are closed. Haven't got enough to drive to another one. We're fortunate we don't actually need the car for much so will just have to wait.

Explosivefarts · 24/09/2021 13:29

People are waiting in queues hours long her for petrol it’s madness
