AIBU in thinking it's OK to have the odd glass of wine while pregnant? Maybe 2 very small glasses a week?

Yes = YABU and shouldn't drink that much/anything at all

No= it's fine to have the odd glass

I didn't. I was really fussy....no alcohol, no liver, no pate, scrub veg until it almost washed away. It's only a few months to go babe.

PartyPotato · 24/09/2021 08:59

@YourFinestPantaloons I know, that’s what I was getting at. So even if a small amount of alcohol is ok, they have to give the advice of not drinking alcohol at all in order to protect everyone, like you said, the people that will think oh great I can carry on as normal then. They can’t pick and choose ‘well if you weigh this much you can have X amount of units’ or any other individual assessment. I was going against the people using the nhs website as ‘proof’ that any amount of alcohol is terrible.

Could you pm your address for your shiny gold medal?

Although for FWIW I do think in some circumstances shoplifting is also fine!

I hate to derail the thread but do tell!

Erm off the top of my head, some supermarkets consider dumpster diving to be shoplifting; I don't have a problem with that. Nor would I have a problem with someone stealing from a huge chain if they had nothing in to feed their kids and no money to buy any food. Not alcohol though obviously; we've already established you wouldn't feed that to your newborn Wink.
needabreak5 · 24/09/2021 09:33

YANBU - it's fine in moderation. I enjoyed the odd drink in both pregnancies (though only after 3 months as I didn't fancy before that).

I truly believe that the odd occasional drink will do no harm, I've never seen any real research or evidence against this.

Valeriekat · 24/09/2021 10:40

"There is no amount of alcohol that's known to be safe to consume during pregnancy. If you drink during pregnancy, you place your baby at risk of fetal alcohol syndrome."
Why would you risk it?

YourFinestPantaloons · 24/09/2021 10:42

@arield

People address obesity in pregnancy all the time. Midwives check weight at every appointment and those with high bmis are considered higher risk.
But do people tell women they're selfish and not fit to be mothers because they're overweight?
YourFinestPantaloons · 24/09/2021 10:44

@WoozySnoozy

Not if you enjoy a glass. Which many people do. Remember the woman, the person gestating? Her wants matter too yes she matters too but why is the glass of wine so important? That's what I don't get. Why is it so essential to drink.
It's not essential but women shouldn't only be restricted to what is essential. You might not understand it but if someone enjoys a drink then who are you to judge if that's acceptable?
YourFinestPantaloons · 24/09/2021 10:45

@WoozySnoozy

Maybe have a think about why the government don't put out statements about bananas I think it's because fewer people consume bananas in large quantities. But maybe they could put a sticker on them with the crossed out pregnant lady.
Or maybe we could not tell women what to do all the time
ManifestDestinee · 24/09/2021 10:49

There is no amount of salad that is known to be safe in pregnancy. If you eat salad during pregnancy, you place your baby at risk of listeria, this can cause fetal death, blindness, severe learning disabilities and more.

Why would you risk it? Are you so selfish that you can't give up salad for 9 months?

What does your partner think? It’s not just about you. What about the baby? I didn’t drink when pregnant and to be honest have only had about 3 glasses of wine since she was born 2 years ago and I used to love a bevvy. But life changes when you have a kid… I think you are in for a bit of a shock, you’ll be making bigger sacrifices than wine, get used to it

Is this a joke? Since when did men get an opinion on what a woman does with her own body? Hmm

This is ridiculous

I’m confident most people know this, but what the hell it’s got to with drinking small amounts while pregnant, I couldn’t tell you.

Gotta a love a bit of internalised misogyny mixed with burning martyr
YourFinestPantaloons · 24/09/2021 11:21

By the time my DD was 2 I'd been on a hen do abroad, getting very drunk.

I cannot stress the importance of showing your children that your life, time and enjoyment matters too.

Shes 9 now, I've been away with friends a few times since then and she actively knows that my needs matter just as much as anybody else's in the house. Trust me, it's a good tactic to go with if you want your kids to see you as a human being

Also I feel like "but only for women" needs to go on the end of this sentence. How many men who 'love a bevvy' have only had 3 beers since their child was born 2 years ago

WoozySnoozy · 24/09/2021 12:11

@YourFinestPantaloons good point. This thread has definitely made me look at my views again.

arield · 24/09/2021 12:36

@TheKeatingFive

I think the difference with obesity is cultural. I’ve never heard anyone be called selfish for getting pregnant while obese.
Maybe it's not said aloud but I'm sure most people judge
arield · 24/09/2021 12:38

Not if you enjoy a glass. Which many people do. Remember the woman, the person gestating? Her wants matter too

Oh for gods sake, 'wanting' a glass of wine isn't a great priority.

You can't always get what you want.

arield · 24/09/2021 12:39

Ugh I hate this obtuse passive aggression of the faux-dippy "I just don't undy-stand" that women do. Fucking grow up, and say what you mean

I'm not being PA, I think anyone who can't go without alcohol for 9 months needs to look at their relationship with alcohol in general

Newsflash - men and women are different.

Gosh you're right, heaven forbid a woman enjoy herself with something harmless. Let's not get ahead of ourselves ladies
