To think high heels look a bit silly?

I'm a sucker for them (or used to be) but the more time goes by I'm starting to feel they have very little place in my wardrobe.

I feel overdressed and try to hard in them. I think it's hard to pull off the effortless look in heels. But I also feel like something is missing when I don't wear them on a night out for example.

I feel like it's yet another pointless trend for women to continue following - that are really uncomfortable and serve no real purpose.

I've also noticed younger women rarely wear them - have they seen the light?!

Or AIBU for feeling this way

I am surprised by some of the strong reactions. If women want to wear heels and they will again once fashions change - then it’s their choice. All this patriarchy shit makes me laugh. Women dress for themselves and to outshine other women. Nobody forces young women to put fillers in their lips, men actively say they hate it but girls still do it!

JackieWeaverHandforthCouncil · 21/09/2021 23:16

I don’t think many of the PPs are coming across like the young, cool fashionistas they think they are. Instead they come across as quite judgmental and vengeful.

If you think it’s now unfashionable to wear high heels then surely the high heel wearers as the true counter cultural individual cool hipsters?

I’m normally in trainers, chunky boots or mid heels. I do have a couple of higher heels but very rarely wear them. I will do at some point. All I know is that no matter what shoe I wear, I’m still going to look like a middle aged mother. No shoe is going to make me look 25!

The middle aged uniform of slouchy clothes and white trainers look is also a fashion trend, not individual.

If you don’t want to wear heels don’t, nobody is forcing you, but don’t pretend you care about random women’s foot pain.

bridgeofslides · 21/09/2021 23:18

I can't bear the pain any more.
I went to a do with 18/19 year olds recently. They had perfect make up, hair and cocktail dresses.....all worn with scuffed converse. I thought this looked so modern I loved it.

KitchenDancefloor · 21/09/2021 23:18

I haven't worn heels for years. I'm out of practice and probably couldn't now.

I have a wedding coming up soon (guest not bride) and I can't choose what I'll wear as an outfit because I have no idea what to put on my feet.

I spend my life in flip flops, trainers, biker or Chelsea boots. Fine for home, surprisingly okay for office, but for a wedding? I have no idea.

Rubyflint · 21/09/2021 23:19

What do people think about wedges? Will they make a comeback?

Garriet · 21/09/2021 23:20

I can’t wear them but I used to covet them. They’re definitely out of fashion now though, with the younger generation. I went into a branch of Schuh yesterday and there wasn’t a single heel to be seen, not even a kitten.

Libraryghost · 21/09/2021 23:21

@JackieWeaverHandforthCouncil I think it’s hilarious that middle aged mumsnetters think that because their daughters aren’t wearing them that’s the end of heels. , Nah - they will return. Fashions change.

postingfortraffichere · 21/09/2021 23:22

@Rubyflint I think fir summer months wedges are still quite popular for evenings holidays etc

OP posts:
PattyPan · 21/09/2021 23:24

Yanbu. They are second only to pointy shoes for looking stupid! I’m 26 and never wear heels. I wear shoes which are foot shaped rather than squashing my feet into whatever shape designers have deemed fashionable.

AmberLynn1536 · 21/09/2021 23:26

Naga Munchetty sums it up perfectly.

Sparklfairy · 21/09/2021 23:32

I live in the centre of an historic city and the streets and pavements are cobbled and battered. I had to stop wearing stiletto heels (especially after a drink) before I broke my neck!

I have some lovely stiletto ankle boots which haven't been worn since I moved in Sad

That said, I've braved a chunky boot heel now and then, but I still have to concentrate when walking those fucking cobbles possibly clutching the arm of my date for dear life Grin

postingfortraffichere · 21/09/2021 23:33

@AmberLynn1536 I love her response it's quite funny!

And I agree any women, or person has the right to wear whatever they choose,

But I still stick by that I can have an opinion on high heels and people shouldn't try and censor it!

Happymum12345 · 21/09/2021 23:33

I always think they look like pigs trotters, especially on chubby women. Some people look amazing in them, but I definitely look more trotterish than anything else!

MiddlesexGirl · 21/09/2021 23:35

I'm glad high heels are no longer seen as required for work. Having said that I do struggle with a professional type shoe ... luckily I can get away with smart trainer types as the alternatives - loafers, ballerinas, other flats just don't suit at all.

But for a formal event or evening wear you can't beat a high heel for a touch of glamour. I feel altogether more stylish and confident. The shoe has to be well chosen .... have to be able to walk in it .... and if you can run in it too that's the ideal. Cobbles and steep downhills are a killer! But I won't be giving them up yet as they make me feel good.

Yes I think you’re right. Most weddings are in the summer so wedged are a good alternative to sinking in the grass in heels!

postingfortraffichere · 21/09/2021 23:37

@MiddlesexGirl agree. I'd definitely wear them for a wedding or black tie do for example

I used to love heels and have a wardrobe full of them. I bought a coveted pair of mid height red suede pumps in February 2020 as a birthday gift to myself and never wore them and now when I look at them I doubt I ever will.

I like a summer strappy heel for weddings and occasions I’m dressing up for and will continue to wear them and do not find them uncomfortable or difficult to walk in.

Recently bought a leather skirt that looks awful worn with flats so I will wear with a mid heel ankle boot.
A nice heel can really pull an outfit together however I can’t see me routinely wearing heels like I used to as I’ve just gotten way too comfortable in flats and trainers over last 18 months.

DD age 19 has never worn heels!

SoftSheen · 21/09/2021 23:38

I've literally never worn them.

Yes she is fab and she does wear some amazing clothes and shoes. Not trying to censor discussion at all, it’s the way it’s done as I expressed in my earlier post, you can dislike an article of clothing without making disparaging comments about the wearer, that’s the difference.

BoredZelda · 21/09/2021 23:48

And some flat shoes can make the wearer look dumpy, which isn't a youthful look.

And yet nobody suggests men look “dumpy” in flat shoes. Women are expected to wear crippling shoes to somehow look less “dumpy”?

I never got on with heels of any kind. I had a brief moment when I bought some chunky heeled boots when I first met my tall husband, I’m really short. After about 3 weeks, I send them to charity as they were just so uncomfortable. I’m happy in my flat soles, happy with my height and don’t need a pair of shoes to boost my self esteem.

Some women can carry them off, but most often the women I’ve seen walking in them look like they have shit themselves as they walk. Very unattractive.

liddlelambsydivey · 21/09/2021 23:50

I'm 42 and have never worn real high heels in my life, and very short, chunky heels only rarely, on the dressiest occasions (wedding, for instance).

I try to dress only for myself, especially when it comes to comfort and safety. I'm 5'6", so only average height, but who cares how tall I look? I'm married, but even if I were still single, I don't think most men are only attracted to tall women.

JackieWeaverHandforthCouncil · 21/09/2021 23:54

‘you can dislike an article of clothing without making disparaging comments about the wearer, that’s the difference.’

Exactly. Some of the replies on this thread remind me of of a thread from a few years back which still tickles me.

Basically the OP was really upset because some ‘cool’ women were leaving her out of their group and she’d been to a wedding and requested the DJ play a song that ‘team cool’ thought was unfashionable. They sniggered and looked over a few times then the top cool woman went over to the DJ and asked him to stop playing the ‘uncool’ song and play ‘Titanium’ by David Guetta and Shia instead…which made me genuinely laugh out loud.

Just because you think somethings fashionable or unfashionable not everyone will feel the same way and that’s fine.

AmberLynn1536 · 21/09/2021 23:54

This is an interesting picture, Kate Moss watching her daughter on the cat walk at London Fashion week today, the fashionista front row are wearing a mixture of heels and flats.

To think high heels look a bit silly?
ItsNotMeAnymore · 21/09/2021 23:58

I’ve never worn them. I think they look silly.
I don’t mind wedges though.
I think heels look a bit dated.

Completely agree..... and then we see comments like this....

the women I’ve seen walking in them look like they have shit themselves as they walk. Very unattractive.
