Am I going to have SS involved because of this?

DD is 7, year 3.

She usually has a hot lunch at school but doesn’t like any of the options tomorrow (Pizza, Jacket Potatos and Curry she doesn’t like any of them). She will not eat the cold option of a wrap either – sensory issues around food, she can be very fussy with food - is fine everywhere else, even school have commented on her food.

I went to my dads today on my pedal bike, went shopping for lunchbox stuff (pasta, tomatoes, some fruit and some kitkats) and other stuff then dads dropped me, plus bike home (he has a bike rack on the car) but I’ve left the bags in the boot of the car. I’ve got DD back with me now (she’s been to her dads for the weekend) and dad lives an hour away anyway, there’s no way she could cycle that far. No public transport on a Sunday, no local shops open – nearest shop to me is a Tesco Metro, no corner shops or anything as I’m basically in the town centre.

I don’t own my own car as I can’t afford to (single parent). I walk and cycle everywhere and use public transport if I can’t get there under my own steam.

Dad won’t drive out to me (understandably) and I can’t get to the shop before school starts. I might be able to get there before lunchtime tomorrow but it really depends on my morning meeting and whether I can get back to my town in time.

If I email school whats likely to happen? SS report? It’s the first time it’s ever happened, usually DD will eat at least 1 of the 3 options offered by school or I can get to the shop to get stuff to make it ok.

Lesson learnt, never shop on a Sunday always do it the other days when the Tescos shut at 10pm so I can at least throw something together.

What is she going to have for breakfast? If there is a takeaway, get something from that, get it delivered? Tell your dad to stop being arsey and drive and pay him the Petrol and apologize to him? You are telling me there isn't a garage even in your area?

Nanananani · 19/09/2021 19:42

What is she having for breakfast?

Birdkin · 19/09/2021 19:43

There’s no newsagents anywhere near you? A flapjack a banana and some crisps is better than nothing and they’ll be open before 9

PoolNooodle · 19/09/2021 19:43

I’m guessing you’ve had previous ss involvement to be worried they would be called because of this? I don’t believe there are literally no shops you could go to before school tomorrow, I sometimes forget to get my kids water bottles for school so I stop off at the shop before school. You’re saying nothing will be open tomorrow at all? Take her in 15 mins late then 😕

WhyMeLord · 19/09/2021 19:43

What about your daughters dad, can he bring her something over for a packed lunch?

Frenchforkids3 · 19/09/2021 19:43

Don’t worry OP, it’s one day. Say she’s going to have a school meal and pick her up with a big snack. It’s one meal, she really won’t starve.
Will you have breakfast for her?

Sillyoldelfbacktoself · 19/09/2021 19:43

@Waspsarearseholes

Something about this just isn't sitting right. If you did a 'big shop' because you have literally no food in the house, how did you manage to leave it in your dad's car? There's more to this, isn't there? What are you going to give your daughter for breakfast, if you have nothing in the house? Why can't you give her the same thing for lunch?
I have cereal and long life milk that I always keep in. I have tins of beans, chicken, mince and frozen vegetables in the freezer. I only have a small 2 drawer freezer so I don't keep loads in - DD has a hot lunch on 3 out of 5 days at school as she'll eat some of the stuff there.

I don't usually go down to so little in my cupboards, I know it's my own fault for not being more organised.

I hate the thought of her going hungry.

What are the topping options for the jacket potato tomorrow, could she have the topping without the potato? Then yoghurt/fruit/whatever else they normally get as part of the meal?

Or is there a shop next to the school where you could drop her off, go to shop and get a sandwich or something, then drop it into the office before heading to work?

scully29 · 19/09/2021 19:43

tbh if its SS your worried about just book her in for school lunch and she can eat whatever she can manage?

Griefmonster · 19/09/2021 19:43

What is she having for breakfast?

Cheeeeislifenow · 19/09/2021 19:44

So make her mince, frozen veg then in like a gravy? A pot of dry cereal?

Cheeeeislifenow · 19/09/2021 19:45

Chicken and beans? That's a lunch right there.

DanielRicciardosSmile · 19/09/2021 19:45

Are you sure the Tesco doesn't open until 9am? Seems bizarre for a shop thats open until 10pm to be closed for most of the morning, thereby missing all the commuters nipping in on the way to work. They're mostly open from 6am here.

Griefmonster · 19/09/2021 19:46

Sorry cross post about breakfast.

Agree it doesn't add up. You cycled to your dad's for what 4 or 5 hours to get some food?!

You either send her in with something from home (cooked chicken and veg for example) or she has lunch. There isn't another option by the sounds of it.

Deep breaths. What is really going on here?

Bythehairywartsonmywitchychin · 19/09/2021 19:46

Beans or soup in a flask?

Beg your dad to drop your food off?

DeepaBeesKit · 19/09/2021 19:47

You order her a school lunch.

If she doesnt eat any she is unlikely to be the only one.picky eaters arent unusual. As long as she is a healthy, well nourished child whom they have no care concerns over, her choosing not to eat a single meal is not going to be a red flag at all.

User5827372728 · 19/09/2021 19:47

There must be something she can eat, or go to a food shop in the morning, all ours open around 7am here!

Or ask a friend! I’ve had a last min call from a friend before and I’ve made her kid a lunch!

GrowThroughWhatYouGoThrough · 19/09/2021 19:47

Ask her dad to drop some stuff off for you. Ask him to babysit while you go and get her something. Order takeaway which can be eaten cold tomorrow

Sillyoldelfbacktoself · 19/09/2021 19:47

There's a petrol station I could get to first thing that opens at 7am but it's passed school and about 3/4s of a mile further away from school. She'd eat a banana out of those 3 suggestions, and probably a chocolate bar, its whether I can get there, get DD to school and then to the train station (which is back passed my house) in time for my morning meeting.

Do they have a kitchen and cook on site? If so, call the school first thing. Explain what's happened and the kitchen should be able to rustle something up for her. We e done it at my school loads of times.

SmileyClare · 19/09/2021 19:48

Of course social services aren't informed if a parent forgets one packed lunch. Is that just an over dramatic title for click bait? Confused

Cobble together whatever you have- even a few custard creams or whatever the family usually have for breakfast with a flask of milk. Borrow something from your neighbour if you're on good terms- a piece of fruit or a snack bar.

There's really no need to be so anxious. You made a mistake, these things happen Smile

Bythehairywartsonmywitchychin · 19/09/2021 19:48

Cereal in a sandwich box and milk in a flask?

MrsLargeEmbodied · 19/09/2021 19:48

i think she might surprise you and eat something in her hot school dinner
please dont stress

YoureAllABunchOfBastards · 19/09/2021 19:48

Cook the chicken and send her with that? DS2's preferred packed lunch is always cooked chicken - ideally for him in some kind of breaded form...

I never thought of that, thank you. Toppings are Beans (she loves), Tuna, Cheese or butter, she'd have beans and a banana. Will email school secretary in the morning.
