Under 70

unlikelytobe · 19/09/2021 19:07

Anyone who dies in their 80's and beyond has had a fair innings but it just depends so much on the individual and what their life is like.

Ikeptgoing · 19/09/2021 19:07

Now retirement age is 67, anything under 5-8 years of being retired seems to be a real short change to me so I would say under 75 is too young .

However in reality sometimes people are quite unwell in their 60s and 70s so dying in 70s isn't a surprise when fighting serious ill health. It's very hard when someone is in rude good health and suddenly dies even when they have been really independent until the last year.

In terms of dying from an accident or terrible disease earlier- any child dying, 20 or 30 year olds is absolutely tragic as is the death of parents in their 40s and 50s.

So in summary she 75 or above. The average age of death is 86 for women and 84 for men I think. If you die in your 80s it may be too young for rest of your family but you've had a good innings and lots of memories of important life events you've been able to be part of 🥰

drpet49 · 19/09/2021 19:07

Under 60

NuffSaidSam · 19/09/2021 19:07

@DecadentlyDecisive

30 or under.

If you get past 70, you've had a bloody good innings.

Really?

Are you from Tudor times?

If someone dies at 31, you think they had a good, long life?!

freelions · 19/09/2021 19:09

It always feels 'too young' if the person was in reasonable health and still had a decent quality of life but I would say under 75 you would feel short changed and in general the younger the person, the more 'tragic' it feels

Auntienumber8 · 19/09/2021 19:12

Under 65 really very awful
Between 65 and 75 too young
Over 75 as much as I have three people I love very much who are this age it’s enough time on the planet.

BrilloPaddy · 19/09/2021 19:21

I think it's the quality of life that counts and not the quantity.

Having worked in care, living for years in a nursing home is my worst nightmare with no quality of life. I'd rather drop dead at 60 having lived a full life than live until 80 and spend 20 years declining.

The problem with healthcare is that we now expect people to live into their 80s/90s and don't take account their actual benefit from doing so..........

ThinWomansBrain · 19/09/2021 19:25

it changes as you get older!

I was walking in a victorian cemetary park yesterday, and was musing on the number of "young" deaths indicated on the remaining gravestones - 50's being common, and lots of child deaths.

GreekTragedy · 19/09/2021 19:26

@DustyMaiden

I think under 75 but the nearer I get to it the younger it seems.

Haha this is me too!! That would only give me 15 more years to live.

tempester28 · 19/09/2021 19:26

75

tempester28 · 19/09/2021 19:27

Yes! te nearer you get - still feeling young then you realise old is not really old

janj2301 · 19/09/2021 19:40

I work for a GP, I'm 68, anyone younger than me dying is bad BUT there are a load of patients living with really awful illnesses, that makes me feel even worse.

DuesToTheDirt · 19/09/2021 19:44

Agreed. There's one near me where you were lucky to make it past 50. It's not just child deaths either, there are deaths all the way through 20's, 30's, 40's... It's mid-Victorian, I think things were improving by late Victorian times. I'm always curious to know what they died of.

CoffeeRunner · 19/09/2021 19:47

My parents both died in their 60's. That's too young IMO.

Neither retired, neither got to be old or relax. They went straight from full time jobs to terminal illness.

Gwenhwyfar · 19/09/2021 19:48

Under 70.

Gwenhwyfar · 19/09/2021 19:50

"Now retirement age is 67, anything under 5-8 years of being retired seems to be a real short change to me so I would say under 75 is too young ."

But someone aged 74 now is likely to have retired before 67 years old so will have had more than 7 years.

Buddywoo · 19/09/2021 19:50

Well I am 75 in November and I want another 2 years maximum. My general well being and energy has declined sharply in the last year and I have various health conditions.I would be content to go now but certainly don't want to make 80.

Rainbowheart1 · 19/09/2021 19:54

When I was younger I thought 50 was old. When I became an adult and a friends family member died at 52 I thought that was young.

I would say 75 maybe, but the older you get the higher the number goes in your opinion I guess.

My 90 year old nan said she still felt as good as 21 inside until she hit 87 then started declining.

ApplesAreTheBaneOfMyLife · 19/09/2021 20:03

Under 70

queenatom · 19/09/2021 20:03

In my head anything over 80 is pretty much default ‘good innings’, anything under 70 feels young. Between 70 and 80 is a grey area, for a lot of people I’d think they’d been a little short-changed, but there are definitely some others I know will have done well to make it that far!

bluechameleon · 19/09/2021 20:05

I think my concept of this has changed as my parents have aged. I would have said maybe 75, but now they are in their early 70s that seems much too young.

Theworldisquiethere · 19/09/2021 20:11

It does vary dramatically from person to person, I work in care and some people in their mid 70s seem very ‘old’ while one lady I’ve met was 97 and the only thing holding her back from being able to do everything for herself was her arthritic knees. I agree that between 70 and 80 is a definite grey area.

Cattenberg · 19/09/2021 20:17

Under 80. But I agree it’s a sliding scale.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 19/09/2021 20:21

Well Noah lived to 950 and he semed quite happy. He achieved quite a lot with his zoo etc. He had his own boat and everything so on this basis l'd say anything under 950 is a bit of a bummer.
