To despise those that voted for Brexit when I’m doing my weekly shop

So little stock on the shelves. Makes the weekly shop a complete nightmare as you just cannot meal plan anymore.

I didn’t vote for this absolute shit storm.

No salmon & sparkling water. Good lord what is the world coming to 🤣

ilovesooty · 19/09/2021 13:26

I'm in West Yorkshire. Several items unavailable in my Asda delivery due later today.

Clocky78 · 19/09/2021 13:26

@toconclude

YABU to confine it to the weekly shop.
Yep!

But what I’m also sick of is people who voted Brexit deciding that all this is actually because of Covid, or something else.

I don’t mind the flaming. I’m pretty angry about Brexit, and doing my shopping is like a weekly reminder!

ChargingBuck · 19/09/2021 13:27

YANBU.

& btw, it's ok to despise them when you're not shopping, too Wink

trama · 19/09/2021 13:27

YAN one bit BU. There are huge yawning gaps on the shelves. I will never forgive those fucking credulous pricks who voted to strip us of our rights and screw us all over like this.

SilverGlitterBaubles · 19/09/2021 13:27

@gibletjane

I don't think it's ok to have a supermarket half empty but I haven't been in any supermarket that's half empty or a third empty.
Perhaps it's regional then, but it's certainly an issue in the SE - bread limited choice, meats and chicken very little, salad & veg empty , fresh ready meal aisles fridges half empty, no water and cereal shelves limited. People were more alarmed when the saw similar empty shelves in the early pandemic. Agreed it sounds a bit first world to say 'oh there is no sourdough' in the supermarket but it's certainly not normal and it wouldn't take much for the whole thing to collapse altogether. We are not self sufficient when it comes to food.
itsgettingwierd · 19/09/2021 13:27

Shelves aren't too much of an issue although it's clear some items are missing.

But prices Shock my weekly shop which is pretty standard each week seems to have risen in price dramatically.

thecatneuterer · 19/09/2021 13:27

@ilovesooty

I despise anyone who voted for Brexit anyway. In fact I feel even more strongly about Brexiteers who continue to justify their choice.

Shopping availability is only one of the negative repercussions. Others are worse.

Yes others are worse. The huge shortage of vets is the one that's distressing me.
Tigger85 · 19/09/2021 13:28

I'm in SE Wales, we have been lacking fruit and veg and what we do get has an extremely short shelf life, expirey dates are 1-2 days from when they appear on the shelves. Most other stuff seems to be ok.

ilovesooty · 19/09/2021 13:28

I'm still as angry about it as I was in 2016.

No point in saying it's not helpful - it's how I feel.

Notthemessiah · 19/09/2021 13:28

It is awful to think how companies are going to have to pay British lorry drivers a decent wage rather than bringing in cheap East European ones to undercut them. Their poor profit margins.

Lampzade · 19/09/2021 13:31

There are so many shortages in my local Sainsburys , which is one of the biggest Sainsburys stores in the country.
It surprised me tbh. It’s actually worse than I envisioned.

trama · 19/09/2021 13:31

@WoozySnoozy

Stuff for daughters packed lunch - what stuff? All bread & fillings is worse than not being able to get snack bars.

The salmon and bottled water are luxuries really.
Ready meals are a problem as I know a lot of people rely on them but they might have had some in just not the ones you wanted.

If it's basics people can't get then yes its worrying. But fizzy water isn't usually an essential.

Sod that. So as long as we aren't starving to death it's all fine? No. It's laughable that people are actually trying to claim that it's not been a huge embarrassing failure.

What a total waste of your time and energy.

That's not the point, we were promised sunlit uplands outside the EU, £350 mill a week for the NHS not less choice, higher food prices and higher taxes.
Booknooks · 19/09/2021 13:33

No one is going to starve, the amount of waste supermarkets produce is outrageous. I do hope though that they prioritise cheaper brands as well as the big brands that probably have more money to throw at protecting their supply chain; and that those with family members who will only eat certain brands due to allergies, sensory issues etc manage to get what they need.

WoozySnoozy · 19/09/2021 13:33

It's laughable that people are actually trying to claim that it's not been a huge embarrassing failure.

I'm antibrexit and think it's shit. I just think the shortages to actually get concerned about aren't fizzy water. My local shop has no frozen veg. Frequently. I'm more worried about that.

MrsFin · 19/09/2021 13:33

I'm pretty sure it's nothing to do with Brexit.
Other European countries are having similar problems.

NoWordForFluffy · 19/09/2021 13:33

@MapleMay11

I didn't vote for Brexit but there are no shortages at all here in the North West where I am and haven't been so far.
We've had shortages of some items in this part of the NW. It's quite hit and miss what's in stock.
SmudgeButt · 19/09/2021 13:33

I'm finding that the smaller stores are worse than the big ones...in that the huge lidl is fully stocked but the mid sized one a couple miles away isn't. might just be due to location of course or better management.

but a lot of the shops also used to have huge packs of stuff on the top shelf ready to load lower down as required throughout the day. now they have signs or a single row of fizzy drinks or something. it's been going on for about 2 months now at the Tesco near us.

on the plus side our local butcher is fine but he has a farm so there's no supply chain. and a local dairy farm is selling direct to the public via vending machines and that's great.

and yes Brexit! "Oh we don't want foreigners!!!" "OK so you can drive all the trucks and pick all the fruit! Oh?! Too much like hard work is it???"

trama · 19/09/2021 13:34

@ilovesooty

I'm still as angry about it as I was in 2016.

No point in saying it's not helpful - it's how I feel.

Agreed. It's made us a laughing stock around the world. Why should we be happy to have less? Fewer rights, higher costs, less choice - how can people seriously say any of this is good? I'm yet to hear one tangible benefit of this shit show.
ChargingBuck · 19/09/2021 13:34

@tobedtoMNandfart

We still eat like kings though, unlike the vast majority of humanity ...
We do, but it's worrying to see empty shelves where the veg used to be, several weeks in a row. It's not just about supply logistics, it's the lack of labour available to grow & harvest that veg - 'cos we sent the EU nationals out of our lovely 'hostile environment'.

Britain has voted itself into a position of food insecurity, through an idiotic decision to cut ourselves off from a shared market & an entire continent.

SilverGlitterBaubles · 19/09/2021 13:35

@Booknooks Sadly with rising prices and the cut to UC I think there will be families that go hungry and have to make difficult choices this winter.

WoozySnoozy · 19/09/2021 13:35

how can people seriously say any of this is good? I'm yet to hear one tangible benefit of this shit show. it's better for the environment not to drink bottled water
