So little stock on the shelves. Makes the weekly shop a complete nightmare as you just cannot meal plan anymore.

I didn’t vote for this absolute shit storm.

You're not being unreasonable consider brexit has been a factor, but you're ignorant to blame it for all of society's current ills.

Global supply chain issues have been caused by covid and industries around the world closing down and being interrupted. The ship blockage in the Suez created significant disruption to global logistics/shipping. Yes, Brexit is a factor, and one that's particularly felt by those who didn't vote for it, but don't blame it for everything.

For clarity, I voted remain and have seen no shortages in my local South East supermarkets.

lannistunut · 20/09/2021 07:33

@Booknooks

Boris will win the next election sadly unless Labour pull their finger out, I mean why can't they find a leader who at least has a chance of winning.
There is a question of wtf would Johnson have to do to make people consider not voting for him? He lies and lies, the flat funding, dodgy contracts to friends, covid death toll, Brexit chaos etc etc and that Tory number is only now creeping down.

A country gets the government it deserves? I don't deserve this shower of shit!!

Walkingwounded · 20/09/2021 07:35

I do blame Brexit, along with other factors.

I just wonder if those who voted for it at all regret their choice.

DaphneduWarrior · 20/09/2021 07:38

@FourTeaFallOut

What happens when you can’t buy salmon or tuna? Or bread? Or milk?

Yeah, I mean, I'd panic if I couldn't get my hands on bread or milk. I'd be right there with you despising the 52% right there with you. I just can't get there for nipping to another shop to fill my basket with salmon, fizzy water.

My local Sainsbury’s (London) had no milk last month. None at all. No dairy, no oat, no UHT.

I don’t live within walking distance of another supermarket and I can’t afford a car.

Willyoujustbequiet · 20/09/2021 07:39

There is no bottled water anywhere near me. I find that scary. No water at all.

I'd find it scary if there wasn't a tap in the kitchen.

caravanman · 20/09/2021 07:42

Do you despise people for voting in a referendum (which is an opinion poll) or do you despise the government for running with the results despite the inevitable dire consequences to the nation?

Rising food prices, food shortages, farmers encouraged to grow wildflowers instead of crops (under country stewardship), hypocrisy about climate change commitment [...]

There is a lot to despise, but I would not encourage the hatred of people who were often the victims of the government's duplicity, rather I would turn despise towards a government that has failed to govern for the past five years.

I know someone who works in logistics for supermarkets and he said that when sending out pallets on lorries water is not a priority right now. So there is water but they will prioritise sending out other items, like wine hopefully Wink

Do you not have running water? It's quite safe to drink you know.
User45829057 · 20/09/2021 07:55

Isn't the gas price thing global which is affecting a lot of stuff and not Brexit related, they are speaking about it being global on BBC breakfast

QueenoftheKarens · 20/09/2021 07:55

Don't take this the wrong way.... ( I have nothing against obese people)
But maybe it's not a bad thing? Many of this country is overweight or obese.. maybe having less choice on the shelves will encourage people to eat healthily? Not over eat and over indulge in food?
Might fix a few ongoing health issues people have.

Government act on behalf of the will of the people.

The will of the people is Tory rule.
The will of the people is Brexit.

Everything we are now experiencing is the will of the majority of the people.
You could say the people were lied to, mislead etc. I'd agree but for the fact others warned them and got dimissed.

People.knew voting Tory would see poor people beaten. They knew voting Tory would see the disabled and out of work people villified. They knew voting Tory would see a resurgence of xenophobia... And if they didn't know, they didn't research and didn't educate themselves enough to be voting for the Tories.

They should have known Brexit would harm the country, they were told many times by experts. But you could say they were lied too or mislead. I'd agree if it wasn't for the fact that a 5 minute Google search would have told the the truth about the lies being spun. They chose to believe it, they chose not to research properly, they allowed themselves to be blinded by the lies of a Brexit bus.

Whichever way you want to cut it.
The majority of the people voted for what we have gotten, now the majority of the people will suffer. Cattle voting for the nail gun whilst walking past an open gate.

I have been well practiced at making bread in the last 18 months. Cheap sparkling water I buy infrequently, there's not been any for a while near me so I bought a couple when I saw it at the weekend. Tap water more than suffices usually. I've stocked up on a years supply of sun dried tomato puree after having shortages of that.

For the most part, I've shopped slightly differently since the pandemic started - and I'd unusual shopping habits before then anyway and shopped in different places.

The one thing I found most difficult if you can't go shopping regularly for it is, without a doubt, milk.

You could just buy a soda stream thing and make your own fizzy water

Amboseli · 20/09/2021 08:09

@Walkingwounded the one person I know who voted brexit does regret it now. He admits he believed the lies. I ditched him, he made my blood boil every time I saw him.

It's because of fools like him we're in this mess now. How and why people believed the lies told by vote leave and didn't bother to look up the facts for themselves is beyond me. They must be stupid is the only logical conclusion and analysis has shown that the majority of brexit voters were less educated than remain voters so it's not just my opinion, it's fact. But brexiteers don't like facts.

vera99 · 20/09/2021 08:10

Petrol. I'm stocking up on that. Oh and matches.

kitcat15 · 20/09/2021 08:11

@Maireas

It must be regional, there are no problems where I live (Yorkshire). Yesterday Tesco and M&S were very well stocked - almost pre Christmas level. No shortages. Maybe certain shops have better supply chains?
Definitely must be regional....I'm NW and its been fine where I shop
Amboseli · 20/09/2021 08:11

@Wotwhywhen well said. Completely agree.

Snog · 20/09/2021 08:12

Surely brexit is a dead issue as we can't rejoin the EU anytime soon.

Why wallow in what is done OP? Despising your countrymen is a bad way to live.

eeyore228 · 20/09/2021 08:15

Just wondering if you think that maybe the shortage of CO2 that’s being reported might be a reason??? The same shortage that they are struggling with in Europe owing to gas price hikes. They have had to shut down 2 fertiliser factories because of the price hikes and subsequently we are facing having to slaughter livestock because of it. You can be vitriolic about Brexit all you like but it isn’t always the only thing to blame all the time.

Yes, this is what is supposed to happen in a democracy. However, without digressing into a rumination about the whys and wherefores of Brexit, there was a heck of a lot of blatant lying around the time of the 2016 referendum, and there was a heck of a lot of blatant lying in the last General Election, in which Boris told the nation about his oven-ready deals.
Throughout the pandemic, there was very little democratic governance, rather there were top-down impositions which meant other crises slipped in behind the scenes.
I do not think the after effects of Brexit are solely to blame for the supply shortages or the huge hike in prices, but when all is said and done, many people were blatantly lied to about Brexit, and about what the government can or intend to do.

Lex345 · 20/09/2021 08:17

We have definitely seen shortages of certain items in the local co op-empty shelves type situations. The local large supermarkets have been mainly OK with substitutes available where certain items have been missing-for example a certain type of cheese has been unavailable for a montha but loads of alternatives. The only thing that was completely out of stock was tinned tomatoes on one occasion.

I have taken to always keeping bread making ingredients in (bread is sometimes unavailable at the coop and dont want to go to the big supermarket just for bread), dried milk and have a well stocked long life cupboard.

I am worried about spiralling food costs especially with energy price rises.
