Wish I had a better come-back to random man comment

In BP garage, buying a few bits for tea and kids snacks in the M&S shop there - as I was at the till, random man comes up behind me and says in a loud voice "Well you must be rich, doing your shopping here!". It caught be so off guard I didn't think fast enough and I just shrugged and ignored him. It felt like he was trying to embarrass me in front of everyone to be honest.

Now I can't help thinking how feckin rude that was and all the responses I should have said. Not that I need to justify my shop choice, but
as I had got fuel there, it saved me driving further to another supermarket, paying for parking etc.

Mumsnet - what should I have said?

Fraine
It’s interesting that a woman who tells men who heckle her to fuck off us being ridiculed here and threatened with violence.

Exactly. I am being told I deserve a slap because I don't take heckling from men.

Quite disgusting really.

FirstTimeMommy2021 · 16/09/2021 16:54

LOL maybe... "yes, would you like an autograph?"

Handsoffstrikesagain speakout, you mentioned nothing about friendly chat in your OP and simply indicated that you told any man that spoke to you to fuck off.

That's not true- I was answering the OP- who asked what people do when embarrassed by a loud man in a shop who was making her feel uncomfortable.

@Derbee

This man was not heckling anyone. He was commenting on the prices at an M&S garage ffs
@speakout is talking about men who have heckled her. Her posts clearly say this. Do none of you read?!

The OP could have asked the staff to pull the man's number plate from the CCTV which would help the police identify him.

speakout · 16/09/2021 17:01

Handsoffstrikesagain
But the man wasn’t being rude. He was engaging in small talk.

Was he though? The OP didn't think so, and felt uncomfortable and embarrassed.
I think it is pretty obvious when men seek to demean women with words like this, often in public, and when women stand up or complain, are told " only having a laugh", " where's your sense of humour love".
Women don;t exist for men's amusement.

OP clearly didn't want to make small talk.

That's okay. It's allowed.

Fraine · 16/09/2021 17:08

@MarieIVanArkleStinks

is indeed. As is the suggestion that arbitrary lone females quietly going about their business are somehow responsible for the happiness and/or social interaction of complete strangers.

The patriarchy sure knows how to recruit its stormtroopers.

💯 agreed. So depressing.

MLMbotsno · 16/09/2021 17:09

@seaandsandcastles

I would have just laughed. I don’t see what the issue is Confused
Snap.

I couldn't become upset at something so trivial.

GreyhoundG1rl · 16/09/2021 17:09

@HarrietsChariot

Loads of good comebacks:

"Does your carer let you go out on your own?"
"I've got ten kids so rake it in on benefits"
"Rich enough to know shopping in a BP garage isn't the height of sophistication"

Or a simple "Fxxx off, cunt" might do it.

I'd rather meet 100 of him than one of you.
