To give my DS my bank card to get a few things from the shop?

I mean I know I’m not supposed to let it out of my sight and before COVID-19 I would have sent him with some cash but now I never have any!

Do you/would you let your DC use your cash card? DS is 13.

How does that work with Financial Power of Attorney? My aunt has POA of my grandfathers finances and often uses his card to get his stuff as it's easier to monitor and check than transferring the money to her account. It sounds as if she hasn’t registered the POA with the bank. If she had, the bank would have given her a card to use on his account.

There’s no need for her either to borrow GFs card or to transfer money to her account.

RubyFowler · 13/09/2021 15:25

is nonsense. I don’t have to use my PIN every five contactless payments

I think its within 24 hours.

megletthesecond · 13/09/2021 15:26

I wouldn't.
But both my dcs had bank cards with their Lloyd's accounts from 11 so they can use their own card.

Waitingforthecowstocomehome · 13/09/2021 15:26

@MrsFin

I would, but technically it's fraud.
Of course it’s not fraud. There is no dishonesty. She has given him permission to use the card.

@Doggiedementia

Every so often the contactless doesn’t work and you have to put your pin in though. How would you manage that?

Plus as I said and agreeing with @SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius I think it would give the bank wriggle room if you were a victim of fraud.

I have a card for an account I rarely use and can't remember the PIN so if contactless doesn't work I say I'm sorry I don't know my PIN I'll have to leave it. It's not rocket science

I know MN loves to look for problems but I'm sure the OP isn't talking about a weekly shop at Tesco.

Doggiedementia · 13/09/2021 15:29

NatWest terms and conditions. You’re not allowed to let anyone else use your card.

SaturdaySpread · 13/09/2021 15:29

I wouldn't because if you do have fraud on the account you have to be able to say you've never allowed anyone else to use it or the banks won't refund.

Get one of those cards you can "charge" with cash for him to use.

That must depend on the bank then as I've never been asked for my PIN and I sometimes use my card 5 times in an hour never mind a day Grin
SylvanasWindrunner · 13/09/2021 15:31

I wouldn't even think twice about this.

GreyhoundG1rl · 13/09/2021 15:31

It's part of the bank's conditions that you don't lend the card to anybody.
I'd do it, lots of people do it, but that poster is not incorrect. You can't legally transfer permission to use the card to somebody else.

LimitIsUp · 13/09/2021 15:32

I do this too

DontAskIDontKnow · 13/09/2021 15:38

If you do it a lot, then I’d suggest getting him his own card and transferring the money. With online account apps, it’s really easy to transfer.

BarbaraofSeville · 13/09/2021 15:38

@purplesequins

don't contactless transactions sometimes ask for a pin at random intervals? or not in the uk?
They do, that's the worry in this scenario, although it's pretty unlikely in my experience.

I rarely seem to get asked to use my PIN, but maybe that's because I use it often enough to not trigger the request to enter it or don't stray from a predictable usage pattern.

It's pretty low risk but in my checkout days I was told to not accept card payments if the person presenting it clearly wasn't the cardholder

But if the checkout person doesn't see the card, how do they know that the card being offered by a 13 YO male is actually owned by an older female?

AlwaysLatte · 13/09/2021 15:41

Sometimes you have to. My Dad is on home oxygen and can't get out so we have to get anything he needs with his card.

Iggly · 13/09/2021 15:42

I do have to enter my PIN on some occasions especially after I’ve used it loads.

My DCs have their own cards so I’d send them to the shop with theirs and pay them back.

Doggiedementia · 13/09/2021 15:43

Thing is, I’m sure that if you’ve done this - and because it’s a breach of the Ts and Cs - it means the bank potentially won’t refund if there’s fraud.

ElephantMoF · 13/09/2021 15:43

If the Financial PoA is registered with your GF bank then your aunt can be issued with her own card for your GF account

Plumtree391 · 13/09/2021 15:44

Yes I would. I didn't know it was fraud! I've given both my son and my husband my card before now.

notacooldad · 13/09/2021 15:44

I used to when money were younger.
In fact we still do it now( eg if we are out for lunch with them Dh will hand DS his card and tell him to 'get the round in' .However these days things have changed slightly and Ds will hand me his card for me to get things!!

Maireas · 13/09/2021 15:45

When I got Power of Attorney, my name was added to the card with PoA added

diddl · 13/09/2021 15:45

I would never give anyone my card to use.

Am surprised that so many would!

SusieBob · 13/09/2021 15:46

"But if the checkout person doesn't see the card, how do they know that the card being offered by a 13 YO male is actually owned by an older female?"

It's fairly rare for a 13 year old to have a debit card - I know they exist, but it's rare - so it's not outwith the realms of possibility the person on the checkout would ask to see it.

Granted it's less likely these days but still possible.

notacooldad · 13/09/2021 15:47

Ive never had that. I use it more than 5 times on an evening out!

It's NOT fraud.

It is against the T&C of most bank cards though and could make things potentially tricky if you do lose or have your card nicked.

99.99% of the time of course it's perfectly fine, but just something to be aware of.
