AIBU to think iPhones are really disappointing?

My whole adult life I thought iPhones were a luxury extravagance and I made do with mostly Samsungs especially as I was partying in London in my twenties and half my thirties with high risk of having it stolen on a night bus or lost when drunk etc.
Treated myself finally at age 39 to an iPhone 11 and I am bloody disappointed! There is no in built beauty mode so I look like sh** in all my photos, it takes 3 bloody hours to charge fully (and It didn’t even come with a plug so I had to buy a charger to even charge it - and now I learn there is another charger I can shell out £50 to charge it faster!), it constantly tells me my iCloud storage is full and I can’t turn off the notifications, loads of things seem really clunky. Worst smart phone I have ever had.
AIBU?
YABU - iPhones are the holy grail of smart phones
YANBU - you shoulda stuck with Samsung, you disloyal fool!

@JaneJeffer

I don't get what people mean by intuitive? I much prefer iPhone to Samsung. It's way easier to use.
That's what they mean Grin

It's inuitive if you can pick up a brand new model of phone that you've never used before and be able to 'guess' how to use it without being shown.

I can do that with iPhones but everytime someone hands me an Android phone and asks me to do something with it, I need telling where the right setting is.

nonono1 · 10/09/2021 12:37

YABU - I love my iPhone, it’s streets ahead of all the other options out there IMO.

k1233 · 10/09/2021 12:39

Hate iPhones too. Work phone is an iPhone and it is thick, heavy and all round ick. Feels and handles like a brick. My androids are a much nicer fit for my hands - much thinner feeling and lighter. Never had a problem with android longevity. Usually keep my phones 4-5 years.

Shirleyphallus · 10/09/2021 12:39

I think beauty mode should be removed

It’s a complete catfishing tool and makes people feel shit about themselves

AngusThermopyle · 10/09/2021 12:39

I think it's definitely personal preference.
I cannot stand any android phones , i just never seem to be able to get the hang of them and always came back to iphone.
Therefore YABU 😀

LemonFantaGin · 10/09/2021 12:42

Never had an IPhone, but my sons do, I can't get on with them, so I stick with Android.

Everyone's different, you don't like it, but others do, trade it in and get an android.

JaneJeffer · 10/09/2021 12:45

Oh right @LeafOfTruth I thought the phone could predict your needs or something Grin

Antsinyourpanta · 10/09/2021 12:45

I've only ever had samsung phones (and fairly middle of the road ones at that)
it does everything I want it to. I just dont think anything would be improved sufficiently to justify the extra cost that an iphone would be. DD insists she needs an iphone - she has a second hand one on a cheapo contract. We dont have any other apple devices so nothing to link it to.

LeafOfTruth · 10/09/2021 12:46

@JaneJeffer

Oh right *@LeafOfTruth* I thought the phone could predict your needs or something Grin
Sooner or later they'll be able to do that, I suspect Smile
CrackerGal · 10/09/2021 12:47

YANBU ~ I had apple 🍎 for years, switched to Samsung 2 years back would never go back to apple again.

Erictheavocado · 10/09/2021 12:54

I don't get the love for iPhone. One of the dcs had o e when they were old enough to start paying their own contract. Within 6 months they had switched back to Android. I've had Android phones for over 12 years now and can't imagine using anything else.

thecapitalsunited · 10/09/2021 13:11

@Peanutsandchilli I think your DH must be having you on. My DH is a senior dev at one of the biggest software companies in the world and everyone there has Apple gear. I’ve worked in telco for years and again, plenty of iPhones and Macs hanging around. If anyone is doing creepy shit it would be the giant ad company Alphabet/Google! But I seriously doubt that because it would be too hard to keep it a secret with the way that tech is scrutinised and the sheer number of people working for these firms. If you helped make a product which did all kinds of bad stuff you’d not buy it and you’d advise your relatives no to either then boom, bad stuff is leaked to the public.

Buy which ever phone you like. Choice is a great thing and no one needs to sneer at other peoples choices.

Peanutsandchilli · 10/09/2021 13:23

@thecapitalsunited I doubt he's having me on. He works in a similar role as your husband, for a large company, and I know that he, nor his colleagues vouch for Apple products. Obviously I don't know much about it, so can't discuss the ins and out, but I trust him and know his (bloody obsessive) knowledge of technology is sound.

dementedma · 10/09/2021 13:25

Not a fan at all. Have to use one for work and hate it. Runs out of charge really quickly, often doesnt get a signal where my Samsung does. Much prefer Android

BasicDad · 10/09/2021 13:26

@nonono1

YABU - I love my iPhone, it’s streets ahead of all the other options out there IMO.
How?
JassyRadlett · 10/09/2021 13:27

I think it’s personal preference, probably based on what you’re used to.

I’ve had an iPhone since the 3G for personal use and over the years had blackberries, windows phones, iPhones and Samsung phones for work. Windows phones should obviously be burned with fire. I am left cold by the (top end) Samsung that everyone was raving about; I find it annoying.

I can only conclude that so much is what you’re used to.

I can never leave iOS because all my apps are on it, including those I’ve paid for 😄

BaronessOfTheNorth · 10/09/2021 13:34

YABU (along with everyone else who does this) for using "beauty mode". When I see people using this "feature" I feel embarrassed on their behalf.

londonrach · 10/09/2021 13:37

Never had an iPhone so can't tell you if better but always been happy with my Samsung so never felt the need to change...only a few people I know have an iPhone and they seem to change them every year whilst my Samsung keeps going and doing a really good job.

Horst · 10/09/2021 13:49

Wait Samsung had a mode to make you pretty.

Now I know why so many of the school mums have android phones Grin

Seriously though it’s personal preference, my iPhone doesn’t take 3 hours to charge, it take good photos, my child’s phone is automatically linked to mine to review all purchases and location sharing without the need for extra apps. You can turn off your notifications, you can pay like 90P for extra storage if you need it or maybe delete some screenshots and memes.

takehomepay · 10/09/2021 13:52

I’ve had my iPhone 5 for 10 years! It’s on its last legs though.

19lottie82 · 10/09/2021 13:53

It’s what you’re used to I guess. I have had iPhones for +10 years although I did swop to an android for 6 months ago a couple of years back and I absolutely hated it! So iPhones all the way for me from now on.

VeryQuaintIrene · 10/09/2021 13:55

Android all the way - Iphones are ridiculously priced and don't have certain features that are really useful to me (dual SIM, for starters.)

Madcats · 10/09/2021 14:03

We went down the Mac route with computers in about 2004/5 and DH got his first iPhone in 2007...then MacBooks and iPads.

Apart from our first iPhones, and possibly an iPhone 4, we just spend £150-£350 on refurbished models that usually last us 2-3 years.

I suppose it is what you get used to and how you arrange your phone.

I think OP must have a faulty charger?

adrianmolesmole · 10/09/2021 15:10

It depends on your expectations. My DP has an android and he has constant apps crashing/updating randomly and constant ads. But his screen is far nicer and he has more manual settings on his camera I think.

I treated myself to a new iPhone 12 Mini last month and I agree with you about the missing plug. Hmm Not impressed with that at all. But I absolutely love my phone! The camera is better than ever (better than on 11) portrait mode is brilliant. This is my 4th iPhone and each one I get is better than the last. I had the last one (6s) for five years and it's still going strong! I've given it to my mum and she loves it.

Apples might be more "limited" (or "protected" by Apple) than other makes but that's what makes them last so long, like all their products.

Look up Payette Forward on Youtube, they have lots of tips on how to make your battery last longer, what settings you don't need etc. It was very helpful.

FuzzyPenguin · 10/09/2021 15:52

I definitely agree it’s what you are used too. I had an iPhone and then it broke cycled round Sony and Nokia but just couldn’t get on with them so happily back to an iPhone.
I don’t buy them for the name and use my phone for years so don’t have the latest flash model.
