AIBU to think iPhones are really disappointing?

My whole adult life I thought iPhones were a luxury extravagance and I made do with mostly Samsungs especially as I was partying in London in my twenties and half my thirties with high risk of having it stolen on a night bus or lost when drunk etc.
Treated myself finally at age 39 to an iPhone 11 and I am bloody disappointed! There is no in built beauty mode so I look like sh** in all my photos, it takes 3 bloody hours to charge fully (and It didn’t even come with a plug so I had to buy a charger to even charge it - and now I learn there is another charger I can shell out £50 to charge it faster!), it constantly tells me my iCloud storage is full and I can’t turn off the notifications, loads of things seem really clunky. Worst smart phone I have ever had.
AIBU?
YABU - iPhones are the holy grail of smart phones
YANBU - you shoulda stuck with Samsung, you disloyal fool!

Thanks all! Glad I am not the only one who thinks iPhones are overrated but it does seem fairly split.

Regarding beauty mode on Samsung, there are different levels from ridiculously airbrushed so you don’t even look human anymore to a minor polishing of wrinkles and blemishes - so you can choose your level!

Thanks for the various tips on iPhones though, will look into those. DP has said he will buy me a fast charger for the iPhone to stop my moaning about it (as I refuse to spend any more money on this iPhone on principle - but not principled if he is paying Grin)

I went over to Samsung from iPhone and I'm glad I did. The phone is nicer and has more features. I much prefer them now.

MadeOfStarStuff · 12/09/2021 19:27

YABU not because iPhones are awesome but because you clearly didn’t do even the slightest bit of research before making such a significant purchase. You have no one to blame but yourself.

ColorMagicBarbie · 12/09/2021 19:57

What annoys me the most about them is the closed system.

I once needed to upload a file for a music program (program has its own types of files). All I needed to do was get it onto the bloody phone but I couldn’t as iTunes doesn’t recognise the file type. Went down a huge rabbit hole of downloading a third party program to then find it had been zapped by Apple the previous month. Thankfully the developer eventually updated the program but it was a ridiculous workaround where you had to upload the file to email and then retrieve it from within the program.

With Android you could literally just plug the phone into pc and it pops up as an external drive and you drag and drop file. Easy peasy.

Me and my husband tried Android after being I-phone users for years. I took a £400 hit after 3 months to buy an I-phone again. DH is also back to I-phone. I threw my Android across the room several times in frustration (lucky I had a decent case), they are just so clunky and fucking useless!

HollowTalk · 12/09/2021 20:16

@Peanutsandchilli

My husband works in IT and will tell you to avoid all Apple products, not just because of their functionality but because of what goes on in the background that you can't see.

He knows his stuff and that tells me all I need to know.

You might be happy only knowing that but we need to know more! Can he explain?
EileenGC · 12/09/2021 20:19

YABU but I think it's hard to switch if you've had Android for a long time and are used to their systems. I'd struggle to go to Samsung after so many years using Apple.

For me iPhone is great but I also have a MacBook so only run one system, pay €3 a month for 128GB iCloud storage, and I have 4+ years' worth of photos and videos on my phone, whilst a third of the storage is still unused.

All important documents are stored in iCloud and I have access to any of my laptop folders on iPhone's Files app. So I'll be working away for the day with no laptop on me, and someone needs an important work document ASAP - I can email it from my phone in seconds.

I love how I open my browser on my laptop and it immediately suggests the tabs I currently have open on my phone. I don't need to save links or set bookmarks. I can continue filling in forms or ordering online even after switching devices.

Most of my work colleagues also have iPhones and it's so easy to airdrop stuff to each other, or when we're working at a different venue one person gets the wifi password, and all the other phones can access it it automatically via airdrop. No need to ask for the code and put it in... it saves time.

BashfulClam · 12/09/2021 20:21

@Peanutsandchilli well you need to explain no a statement like that. What I like is how secure Apple apps are as they have to be approved whereas an Android app can be written by anyone.

bwfcchick88 · 12/09/2021 20:22

I agree with you. They're nowhere near the best on the market, not anymore. The XR, 11 and 12 models only contain minimal updates whereas you can clearly see the difference between the S9 and the S21 models. Also, Samsung have produced two new folding phones this year. Where's Apple's? Those who say they're a gimmick clearly haven't used one (I was lucky enough to win the Z Flip 5G!)

Madcats · 12/09/2021 20:23

OP I splurged a mighty £15.99 on "nanami" charging pad off Amazon. It appears to do the job.

bwfcchick88 · 12/09/2021 20:23

And I've had both, switched from the 1st gen SE in 2019. Phones have always been my thing 😀

Folding phones exist because Samsung wants to be the market leader for flexible screens and development in this space is only possible if they sell some folding phones. The ultimate aim for Samsung is likely for Apple to pay to use their tech to make flexible screens for their macs / ipads.

Yes. And considering the new fraud typologies emerging on Android platforms, if you do banking from your phone then Apple is the safest ecosystem to do it in.

QueenBee52 · 12/09/2021 20:37

okay...

what the heck is Beauty Mode 🧐

Angrymum22 · 12/09/2021 20:40

Why do you need a folding phone? Didn’t we do those back in the 90s.
I could never understand why some women, including my sister, looked so good in photos taken by phones. Then I found out about beauty setting. Now you feel very smug if I look good on an iPhone photo because I know it’s unfiltered.

Angrymum22 · 12/09/2021 20:43

Queen bee it’s an auto filtering setting on the camera. So all those friends who seem to look fabulous in selfies, it’s all smoke and mirrors. Unless they have an iPhone.

You don't need a folding phone. It just looks a bit different. I think phones now are quite boring, it adds a little something else to the market.
FlumpsAreShit · 12/09/2021 21:35

Beauty mode is very obvious and looks silly but other than that I agree with you. We dumped iPhones a couple of years ago after years of them and now use One Plus (one +?) Much better value.

OneMoreStitch · 12/09/2021 21:46

I have a Google Pixel and love it. I've never had an iPhone, but I don't expect I ever will. Android phones seem intuitive enough for me, and I don't want to pay more for an Apple.

As for needing a new phone every year if you get an Android, that's simply not true. DH has had his same phone for I think four years, now, and it's still going strong. He'll probably upgrade in the next year, but the phone still does all it needs to do, so he'd be upgrading for a better camera and things of that sort.

mafted · 12/09/2021 21:48

Bingo for the highly knowledgeable, IT expert DH, who won't use Apple products for mysterious reasons which are so complicated he couldn't possibly offer the slightest hint of an explanation to his wifeHmm

Etulosba · 12/09/2021 21:55

I recently switched from android to an iPhone. I wish I had done it sooner.

Genuine Apple fast chargers are £19 not £50.

DoormatBob · 12/09/2021 21:56

I have Samsung (personal) and iPhone work. The Samsung is better in every way in my opinion but its also not a cheap compromise, I think it cost more than the latest iPhone?

Significantly better camera.
Notifications easy to use, iphone seem to have a mind of their own.
3 soft buttons are really useful. Iphone back button in least accessible top left of apps?

RoseAddict · 12/09/2021 22:07

You need to switch off iCloud Drive. Go in settings and then iCloud and choose what (if anything) you want backed up on iCloud.

iCloud drove me mad for a bit but now I switch it off on new devices when I get them except for notes and keychain

PrtScn · 12/09/2021 22:09

I prefer Samsung phones, but would always buy an iPad over an android tablet as I personally think they are much better. I take a lot of electronic notes and find the Apple Pencil the best for this. I was tempted with an iphone but spec wise they are a rip off for the money.

Chloemol · 12/09/2021 22:14

I love my iPhone. It’s synced to the iPad

Simple to use no issues
