Neighbour asking us not to buy takeaways

Very recently moved house and have no working oven (should be ready by Friday) so we’ve unfortunately been relying on takeaways/eating out. We are also still sorting things out and kitchen is one of the last things to do. Not ideal but the end is in sight.

Neighbour introduced themselves on the first day, seemed very nice and friendly.

Today I came home, coffee and sandwich in hand, to him calling me over and saying he’s noticed we’ve had a lot of takeaways since we’ve moved and could we not do so. Apparently his 8 year old daughter sees and asks why she can’t have one.

I explained the above and said we don’t really have much choice right now, but that from the weekend we should have an oven etc. he seemed ok about it.

He wasn’t rude when asking but aibu to think he’s very nosey? And that he can’t dictate what we eat?! For info, none of the takeaways have been delivered, all collected by us so it’s not like a delivery driver is knocking on his door or anything.

No way did this happen.

FangsForTheMemory · 09/09/2021 21:43

Aw, c'mon OP. What an oppo! A different takeaway every night and eat out in the garden where the neighbour's daughter can watch.

custardbear · 09/09/2021 21:45

Hi neighbour - learn to tell her 'no' and don't be a wussy parent

WhatAShilohPitt · 09/09/2021 21:48

He’s batshit. The very idea that he thinks he can voice any sort of opinion at all about what you choose to eat is absolutely unfathomable.

DocAutumn · 09/09/2021 21:50

Is this true?

unsportyspice · 09/09/2021 22:00

Tell him to buy her one then. 🤣

catfunk · 09/09/2021 22:18

Ha tell him to do one

Jux · 09/09/2021 22:18

Keep on doing it for a while yet, as said upthread. If he collars you again, just say you like take-aways.

StoneofDestiny · 09/09/2021 22:21

He's an axe murderer

I have read far too many weird threads on MN this evening Confused

Friend has got my candle
Partner gave me his daughters clothes to wear
Elderly man touched my baby

Is there something in the water

willithappen · 09/09/2021 22:24

You sure he didn't say it to you in a joking manner and you've just twisted how it comes across? Only way I can think this is real

Yes, because it runs under a bridge and causes hypertrichosis affecting the hands.
AngelDelightUk · 10/09/2021 00:08

It would make me order more takeaways!!

noblegreenk · 10/09/2021 00:20

CF. I'd suggest he takes this opportunity to acquaint his daughter with the word "NO".

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 10/09/2021 00:25

@BruceAndNosh

Are you ordering an entire meat pie each?

ThinWomansBrain · 10/09/2021 00:28

picnic in ther garden with your takeaway - in full view.

Beebababadabo · 10/09/2021 00:36

Carry on getting take aways but only instead make loud noises going up your path with the bags, such as "ummm/yummy I really can't wait to sink my teeth into my "big mac/fired chicken/lamb buna etc etc" better still set up a picnic outside your home and your takeaway feast can be a feast for their eyes Grin

Rozziie · 10/09/2021 01:42

It sounds ridiculous and I can see most posters think it's a wind-up but I once had a woman behind me in a shop scold me for picking up a chocolate bar from next to the checkout. She was like "thanks a mil...now my son will be begging me for one", as if I'd done something wrong. Not joking, 100% serious. She wanted me to put it back. I was 33!! I obviously laughed in her face and called her an entitled b...

Some people really are that entitled!!

mrsbeeton999 · 10/09/2021 07:06

Keep all the big paper takeaway bags and use them to carry every loaf of bread and bottle of milk you buy into the house!

Strugglingtodomybest · 10/09/2021 07:28

Seriously? Everyone on here going off about this when he was quite obviously joking.

Op, have you not come across a dry sense of humour before?

Yep!
TeloMere · 10/09/2021 08:22

Of course he was joking, I can imagine saying the same thing to someone myself.
Then I'd realise by the look on their face that they'd taken me seriously, briefly wonder if I should try to explain it was a joke and decide not to bother.

Perhaps you should work on your sense of humour because it's not a very funny joke, is it?
PaulaTrilloe · 10/09/2021 08:47

He is entitled and calling you over is some sort of weird power play.

I suggest booking an Ocado or Waitrose home delivery next ...

,"Why won't your dad let you have a takeaway?"
