Neighbour asking us not to buy takeaways

Very recently moved house and have no working oven (should be ready by Friday) so we’ve unfortunately been relying on takeaways/eating out. We are also still sorting things out and kitchen is one of the last things to do. Not ideal but the end is in sight.

Neighbour introduced themselves on the first day, seemed very nice and friendly.

Today I came home, coffee and sandwich in hand, to him calling me over and saying he’s noticed we’ve had a lot of takeaways since we’ve moved and could we not do so. Apparently his 8 year old daughter sees and asks why she can’t have one.

I explained the above and said we don’t really have much choice right now, but that from the weekend we should have an oven etc. he seemed ok about it.

He wasn’t rude when asking but aibu to think he’s very nosey? And that he can’t dictate what we eat?! For info, none of the takeaways have been delivered, all collected by us so it’s not like a delivery driver is knocking on his door or anything.

Tell him to stop his daughter from watching you out the window... bit weird.

BrightYellowDaffodil · 09/09/2021 14:33

He's a loon. If he can't say no to his daughter that's his bloody problem!

If he mentions it again - I presume, like most people, you'll still have takeaways - I'd say "I'm sorry but it's not reasonable of you to ask this".

ShuddaBeenMe · 09/09/2021 14:34

Why can't his daughter have one?

YouDoYouBoo · 09/09/2021 14:34

Jesus, I'm half thinking this has to be a wind up? If not, it's hilarious and clearly very, very fucking weird of him

Kpo58 · 09/09/2021 14:34

Maybe see if you can get a local ice-cream van to visit you daily too. Grin

ChargingBuck · 09/09/2021 14:34

he seemed ok about it.

You what now?

TopBlogger · 09/09/2021 14:34

In "Never Happened World", this is headline news

Constellationstation · 09/09/2021 14:35

@Iputthetrampintrampoline

OMG...I would have take a ways forever more just to stick two fingers up this sad arsehole!
I imagined that too vividly
Recessed · 09/09/2021 14:35

Come on now OP Grin

thenewduchessofhastings · 09/09/2021 14:35

More like he doesn't order takeaways himself and begrudges other people them.

Flavabobble · 09/09/2021 14:36

You were very unreasonable to bother explaining your lack of oven.

tempchecked · 09/09/2021 14:36

He must be related to the folk who cut down their hedge and want their new view of a neighbour's garden made presentable by neighbours clearing a few things from THEIR own garden.

I'd laugh in his face too. Never explain, never apologise, just say - it is what it is, lovely to meet you, bye now.

Sweetchocolatecandy · 09/09/2021 14:37

Whether your take aways are being delivered or not is completely irrelevant, your neighbour gets no say on where you choose to eat or how you source your food.

I think it’s more worrying that he knows where you get all of your food, he must literally be sitting at his window watching you. Sounds a bit stalkerish to me, be careful OP.

Unfashionable · 09/09/2021 14:37

That’s ridiculous. Tell him to mind his own business, but use slightly more polite language if you can. You do have to live next door to him, after all.

timeisnotaline · 09/09/2021 14:37

Please keep ordering takeaway at least weekly, oven or no oven.

WitchBaby · 09/09/2021 14:37

Oh dear I'd have to buy them everyday from now on then 🤦‍♀️

Aprilx · 09/09/2021 14:37

I would assume he had an unusual sense of humour and was joking.

godmum56 · 09/09/2021 14:38

I thought this was going to be noisy late night delivery drivers! I'd be telling him to do one...like when my neighbours I share a drive with asked me to have less grocery deliveries because it wears out the drive

GrealishHairband · 09/09/2021 14:38

Surely he was kidding and something was lost in translation?!

Velveteena · 09/09/2021 14:38

Wut? Confused

CatMandarin · 09/09/2021 14:38

Jesus Christ. This is ridiculous! Grin

HaudYerWheeshtYaWeeBellend · 09/09/2021 14:39

Yabu for even accommodating him!

Loudestcat14 · 09/09/2021 14:39

No way is this real!

CherryHug · 09/09/2021 14:39

Funds permitting, I would be having a nightly takeaway for at least a week. Rude fucker, is he such an ineffective parent he couldn't possibly tell his child "no"?

Still1nLove · 09/09/2021 14:39

Offer to pick some up for his dd too 😝
