Neighbour asking us not to buy takeaways

Very recently moved house and have no working oven (should be ready by Friday) so we’ve unfortunately been relying on takeaways/eating out. We are also still sorting things out and kitchen is one of the last things to do. Not ideal but the end is in sight.

Neighbour introduced themselves on the first day, seemed very nice and friendly.

Today I came home, coffee and sandwich in hand, to him calling me over and saying he’s noticed we’ve had a lot of takeaways since we’ve moved and could we not do so. Apparently his 8 year old daughter sees and asks why she can’t have one.

I explained the above and said we don’t really have much choice right now, but that from the weekend we should have an oven etc. he seemed ok about it.

He wasn’t rude when asking but aibu to think he’s very nosey? And that he can’t dictate what we eat?! For info, none of the takeaways have been delivered, all collected by us so it’s not like a delivery driver is knocking on his door or anything.

Oh how funny!
Have you got any garden furniture yet op?
If so (if weather permits) set the table up outside and enjoy your well earned takeaway al fresco!Grin
Then see if you're still under observation.

Did you know this has been printed in the daily mirror.

JudgeJ · 10/09/2021 11:33

Save all your take-away containers and make a point of carrying them up and down in front of his house even after your oven's fixed.

Threearm · 10/09/2021 11:34

How bizarre

starfishmummy · 10/09/2021 11:46

@SLAGofepicproportions

I'm a bitch so I would buy some brown take away bags and coffee cups, fill them somewhere he can't see them and return home every single day with an apparent take away.

Make sure you vary the size/shape/colour of the bag so he doesn't get wise to you.

God, doing this would bring me so much joy.

Me too. Well I'm mean so I'd just clean the empties as best as could and smuggle them out in my bag for reuse. They don't really need filling, just pop something in them for a bit of weight. Doesn't need to be food.

Yes, it is on FB too.

I'd be inclined to get a large McDonalds bag and put all my belongings in it (not just food) and walk past their house every day swinging it merrily!

He's proper bonkers! 😆

5zeds · 10/09/2021 13:22

I was going to say “from now on nothing goes in or out if it’s not in a takeaway bag”Grin

mamachick2017 · 10/09/2021 15:55

Seriously.

  1. He should just say no.
  2. How does he kno how your getting them lil odd. Too be honest.
But devil's advocate(on behalfof the kid, not the man), why not get a takeaway, I don't like cooking everyday there's always a cheat takeaway every now and again is nice to have.
PlainOldMe80 · 10/09/2021 17:38

What an idiot! Why are they looking out the window who's coming to and from your house anyway?!

That is the funniest thing I have read on MN for a long time

TitoMojito · 10/09/2021 18:02

Hahahaha 😂😂 tell them to buy their daughter a takeaway then and stop being boring. I would've cracked up 😂

TitoMojito · 10/09/2021 18:03

Also you absolutely need to become a JustEat driver now just to really wind them up

Cherrysoup · 10/09/2021 22:25

Man, I’d have told him to fuck right off. Stop your kid staring, pal!

bellabasset · 10/09/2021 22:29

Oh my word you weren't quick enough there to say you owned the take away

BunnytheFriendlyDragon · 11/09/2021 06:01

If they're not even being delivered, he must be watching you pretty closely to even know?

Eralos · 11/09/2021 09:57

Why did you explain yourself!? You owe him no explanation!! Eat what you want.

Hesma · 11/09/2021 10:57

Sounds to me like he needs to learn how to say no to his child 🤣

Icecreamsoda99 · 11/09/2021 11:30

I would start, privately, referring to his daughter as Veruca Salt.

AgentJohnson · 11/09/2021 11:35

Oh dear God! Does he expect you to stop doing other things because he’s unable to manage the wants of his child. Congratulations! Your neighbour is an idiot and isn’t afraid to broadcast it.

I am imagine the shock of his stupidity stopped you from laughing at his bonkers request.

AgentJohnson · 11/09/2021 11:36

This

Hawkins001 · 16/10/2021 22:12

@Ribrabrob

I don’t think he was joking because of the way he said it but I’m really hoping it was Grin

I shouldn’t have explained myself to him, no, but I’m not the most assertive and to be honest I felt a bit embarrassed. It was just all very odd.

hows the neighbour been since op ?
