Neighbour asking us not to buy takeaways

Very recently moved house and have no working oven (should be ready by Friday) so we’ve unfortunately been relying on takeaways/eating out. We are also still sorting things out and kitchen is one of the last things to do. Not ideal but the end is in sight.

Neighbour introduced themselves on the first day, seemed very nice and friendly.

Today I came home, coffee and sandwich in hand, to him calling me over and saying he’s noticed we’ve had a lot of takeaways since we’ve moved and could we not do so. Apparently his 8 year old daughter sees and asks why she can’t have one.

I explained the above and said we don’t really have much choice right now, but that from the weekend we should have an oven etc. he seemed ok about it.

He wasn’t rude when asking but aibu to think he’s very nosey? And that he can’t dictate what we eat?! For info, none of the takeaways have been delivered, all collected by us so it’s not like a delivery driver is knocking on his door or anything.

I wouldn’t have even explained about the oven. None of his business whatsoever.
He needs to teach his 8 year old that I want never gets!

saraclara · 09/09/2021 15:15

Ha! I hope he was joking, but if he wasn't, for goodness sake don't justify yourself to him in the future.

Bringing up his daughter is his job, not yours.

There's only one answer to this .....keep ordering takeaways regularly and have them delivered!! Ideally a Dominioes who usually deliver with a really prominent sign on the roof of the car !
What a prat.

sst1234 · 09/09/2021 15:17

Is this for real? Did he actually say this. Surely no one would be that stupid.

Blondiney · 09/09/2021 15:18

He wasn't serious, surely? Grin

Rainbowsew · 09/09/2021 15:19

@IHateCoronavirus

On a serious note this is why there are an increasing number of kids who can’t cope when things don’t go their way.

“Hmm my Dc is demanding takeaway which I don’t want her to have do I:
a) say “no” and offer up a perfectly reasonable explanation why; or
b) hope she forgets and in the meantime ban anyone within a 3 mile radius from getting one so she’s not at risk from being influenced by their ways?
B it is!” Hmm

Completely agree! Everytime my DC do the "but x, y and z get/do/eat...." I say that theudonit their way we do it ours, I'll never be swayed but what your friends' parents allow and when you're grown up in your own home you can do it your way.
HaveringWavering · 09/09/2021 15:19

Is it possible you have misunderstood his sense of humour?

sst1234 · 09/09/2021 15:20

@SweetBabyCheeses99

Do you know the daughters name? I’d be tempted to go online and order her a lovely Friday night Dominos delivery, paid for of course
Why?

I’m trying to imagine a situation where having that conversation with my neighbour would be easier or better than saying ‘no’ to my daughter. That is insane!!

MustBeDueSomeBetterFeet · 09/09/2021 15:22

I have heard it all now! I thought perhaps the drivers had been annoying them but that really takes the biscuit.

Gilmorehill · 09/09/2021 15:23

Honestly this is one of the most ridiculous things I’ve seen on MN.

notthemum · 09/09/2021 15:35

WTAF ? Really ?
So many questions.
Why can't she have a take away ?
Why is she constantly looking out to see what I have ?
Do you feed her ?
Do you ask all the neighbours not to eat takeaways ?
Once I had established that the kid is not allergic to all takeaway food I might be inclined to invite all my family and friends round on the next evening that weather permits so that we can have a Takeaway night in the garden. Everyone has to order from somewhere different and have them all delivered at the same time.
The time I saw him after that I'd be telling him what a great time we had at our Takeaway party and how we may make it a regular thing. (But maybe I'm a cow)

Blondiney · 09/09/2021 15:37

@Gilmorehill

Honestly this is one of the most ridiculous things I’ve seen on MN.
And that is saying a lot! Grin
Explosivefarts · 09/09/2021 15:40

In all serious I just think he must have a dry sense of humour and wasn’t meaning it .

MintyGreenDream · 09/09/2021 15:42

That is fucking batshit but hilarious.The brass neck of him!Order them to his house "by mistake" so his daughter gets to smell them before you go over to get them.

Spidey66 · 09/09/2021 15:42

Does he go to randoms in the park and ask them not to buy their kids an ice cream for the same reason?

Wilkolampshade · 09/09/2021 15:42

@ChargingBuck oh god there's been so much of this. The builders actually caught him walking around on my nice new roof, having come into our garden and taken it on himself to climb our scaffolding and have a nose... Not just the once either, he came up a while back and gave me and DD a helluva fright as it was the w/e and we knew no-one should be there...
Kinda glad now he wanted to do the full Party Wall award, which is fine, and for which so we stumped up £1800 to his Surveyor. Of course he's claiming damage too...looking forward to him having to deal with our builders when he wants things making good at the end of this all tbh. They're not very keen.
Sadly, his wife is lovely. 🤷‍♀️

OoglyMoogly · 09/09/2021 15:46

I'd be inclined to set up my patio table and chairs on the front lawn, have every meal delivered and eat it there. Performance mealtimes. Hey what the heck, employ a butler and sommelier to serve you too!

Even better if you can eat out there in the rain! 😂

LookAtMoiPloise · 09/09/2021 15:46

Christ, tell him to do one.

CustardySergeant · 09/09/2021 15:47

Surely he can't have been joking or he would have said so when the OP explained about the kitchen, wouldn't he?

WitchBaby · 09/09/2021 15:57

@MintyGreenDream

That is fucking batshit but hilarious.The brass neck of him!Order them to his house "by mistake" so his daughter gets to smell them before you go over to get them.

So his daughter gets to smell them 😂🤣😂

Mamabear188473 · 09/09/2021 16:01

He’s taking the abs piss i would have told him off straight away x

Disfordarkchocolate · 09/09/2021 16:01

I'd be very tempted to move to home delivery
