Calling in sick on first day of new job

Thepinkstuffing · 07/09/2021 22:50

I have my first day tomorrow, it’s in a school, working in the early years classroom as a general TA.
I started having signs of a UTI a few days ago, and today I rang the GP and managed to get a course of antibiotics.
I feel really crap though, I’ve only started them today, I’ve still got tummy pains, pelvic discomfort and the constant need to wee, although just a few drops come out.
If I’m still feeling this bad tomorrow, I may need to call in. I can’t keep running off to the toilet either, as I’ll be with the little ones.

I’m worried I’ll get fired on my first week the way things are going!
It’s so typical of me Sad

If you can manage to go in then go would be my advice. Although it’s completely valid it won’t be a great first impression.
Even if you have to leave after you get there, it shows willing.
I work in a school.

HackAttack · 07/09/2021 23:14

12 hours of antibiotics is a good start. I would take pain relief and try to muddle through, that's a really poor impression

Cocopogo · 07/09/2021 23:15

Sorry you’re feeling so crappy but I wouldn’t take a day off with those symptoms. I’d go in and the little ones will take you’re mind off it and keep you too busy to mope

VaguelyInteresting · 07/09/2021 23:15

You should go and muddle through I’m afraid- better to be sent home ill than call in sick...

PermanentTemporary · 07/09/2021 23:21

Im really sorry but I would appear at work on the first day in almost any circumstances. I was sent home one time. Could you wear incontinence pads/pants (yes I'm serious)?

user098683 · 07/09/2021 23:25

I'd try and go in as it doesn't create a good first impression. I hope you feel better soon.

Salaman · 07/09/2021 23:27

Don't go in if you are ill. UTIs can be quite nasty and you should rest. Ring up and explain in the morning.

SequinsandStiIettos · 07/09/2021 23:34

Ask for a delayed start.
Problem is you will not be paid for that week.

FortniteBoysMum · 07/09/2021 23:35

If you can make it in do so. I was in my second week at my current job when I fell down the stairs on my sons toy car one morning from about 4 steps down. I some how got up, drove the kids to school and limped them in. Drove to work as I had a task that only I could do that morning as the other person was on leave. When I got to work they told me to go get checked out. However being me I did the job I needed too which took about 2 hours then told my manager I was off to the hospital. Drove to A&E had an xray and i had broke my foot. Then went back to work after. Try to go in even if you only last an hour it shows you tried. We have a lad in work who called in sick on day 3 needles to say he did not pass his probation period.

Stompythedinosaur · 07/09/2021 23:37

I would have to nearly dead to ring in sick for my first day in a new role. I would definitely go in with the symptoms you described, fight through and think of of your career.

FizzyPink · 07/09/2021 23:37

I suffer terribly from UTIs and have most my life. In my experience antibiotics get to work incredibly quickly. Take some paracetamol and try to get a good nights sleep and you should feel better in the morning.

FizzyPink · 07/09/2021 23:39

In future, get antibiotics at the first sign. If you can’t get a doctors appointment, Superdrug online doctor sell them for about £20

Pinkchocolate · 07/09/2021 23:39

Don’t call in sick, it would look terrible on your first day. Go in and stick it out for as long as you can. If you feel that horrendous and can’t do the job then leave but try first.

Planty13 · 07/09/2021 23:40

Yeah you need to go. Unless you can’t leave the house, your need to go. It’s one day, push through Flowers

diamondsandrose · 07/09/2021 23:40

Don't even think about staying off , yes you'll feel rotten but so what , you'll need to just be tough with yourself . The adrenaline will get you through anyway , straight to bed when you get home! Good luck

Overthecamelhump · 07/09/2021 23:41

I’d go in tbh. I do sympathise as I once puked all night before starting a new job. Normally I’d never have gone in but as it was I had to.

Holskey · 07/09/2021 23:41

I would go in on my first day if at all possible (I'm a teacher). The thing is, people will think the same as many of us here: that surely you'd go in if at all possible. It would create a bad impression unless you were seriously ill.

I've had interstitial cystitis and it was an awful period in my life, so I know how horrible and painful it can feel. Last thing you want when starting a new job. I would hope the antibiotics start to kick in by tomorrow.

maddening · 07/09/2021 23:42

I did miss my first day at a new job and was there for 11 years. See if it is bearable in the morning, if not then phone in. Best if luck x

Feelingoktoday · 07/09/2021 23:43

You need to go in. Terrible impression if you don’t. Pain relief and antibiotics.

Mummy7777 · 07/09/2021 23:47

Sorry but I had a uti once whilst pregnant- a uti is discomforting but that's about it. I would definitely go in on my first day.

Whattheschitt · 07/09/2021 23:48

Don't get me wrong i don't work as a TA, but in my place if you rang in sick during probation let alone your first day you'd likely be let go.

I'd go in and explain you have a UTI so might need to nip the bathroom more than usual but it shows willing and they might send you home. Stay hydrated to help flush things through and take some pain meds.

Good luck for the first day!

Peoniesandpeaches · 07/09/2021 23:49

Definitely go in if at all possible. Also if your peeing all the time with only a few drops then you are definitely not drinking enough. I know it feels like the last thing you want to do but down as much as you can physically stomach.
The cystitis relief sachets don’t fix the problem but can help provide relief alongside some paracetamol.

Explosivefarts · 07/09/2021 23:57

Do you have a doctors line ? If not go at all costs for your first day they will no doubt send you home but not turning up on first day would be unthinkable.

MountainDweller · 07/09/2021 23:59

I didn't call in sick but I missed the first day of a new job because it was my grandfather's funeral. I was obviously able to give a few days notice though. No one held it against me and I stayed in the job for 3 years, was then promoted within the department.

Many years later I sprained my ankle on the way to work in a freelance job, felt I 'had' to carry on so didn't get it looked at. As a result I had 3 surgeries and am permanently disabled. It's a shame there's such a 'work at all costs' culture these days.

Look after yourself whatever you decide Thanks

Wineat5isfine · 07/09/2021 23:59

Agree with PP - dose yourself up - head in and explain the issue. At least you’ve made the effort.

Good luck 💐
