Calling in sick on first day of new job

I have my first day tomorrow, it’s in a school, working in the early years classroom as a general TA.
I started having signs of a UTI a few days ago, and today I rang the GP and managed to get a course of antibiotics.
I feel really crap though, I’ve only started them today, I’ve still got tummy pains, pelvic discomfort and the constant need to wee, although just a few drops come out.
If I’m still feeling this bad tomorrow, I may need to call in. I can’t keep running off to the toilet either, as I’ll be with the little ones.

I’m worried I’ll get fired on my first week the way things are going!
It’s so typical of me Sad

How are you OP?

I lost control of my bladder once when I had a UTI. I wouldn’t dare go in on my first day with one!

However these statements often come from the privileged. In roles or backgrounds that have seniority etc. They think back to being at start level and they misremember.

Utter bollocks. I manage entry-level staff and I wouldn’t, and haven’t, held it against them. I’m not coming from a “place of privilege” or a “wealthy family” I’m coming from the position of being a person with empathy, who treats employees like adults with the ability to judge their own health and well-being, trusts them to behave like said adults rather than naughty children like so many MNers seem to, and who knows that I’ll get the best out of my team by managing them supportively and non-judgementally rather than by a culture of fear.

@HailAdrian

This thread is shocking. I wouldn't be remotely surprised if people go in to work knowing they have covid, all because of attitudes like these.

That and getting paid SSP.

HailAdrian · 09/09/2021 07:59

@userxx, absolutely that as well.

I hope you’re feeling better. I know that when I have UTI the only places I can be are on the toilet, in the bath or in bed with a hot water bottle between my legs. I literally would not be able to leave the house, let alone put a brave face on to meet new people and take in the details of my first day.

Bakingtraypan · 09/09/2021 08:50

I get Utis I wouldn’t take a day off. 1st day or any day. Working would help take my mind off it.

surreygirl1987 · 09/09/2021 22:34

I hope you are okay OP.
