Discovered (by accident) BIL is bankrupt. Do I tell SIL?

Part of my job is to check the insolvency register. It's a public register, freely accessible to all.

I put in various names, mine, my parents, my sisters and brothers, not expecting to find anything. Anyway to my horror I discovered my BIL was declared bankrupt 3 months ago. It's definitely him as it lists full name, address and dob.

My SIL has never mentioned it. We're fairly close and she's disclosed very personal things to me in the past, so I'm wondering if she even knows. Is it even possible that he could go through the process and her be totally unaware?

My dilemma is, do I tell her or not? What if she doesn't know? What if she does know and she's so mortified she hasn't told anyone? What if she accuses me of snooping and interfering?

I honestly don't know what I do with this information (if anything). Appreciate your thoughts

@LittleBirdBlu

Bloody hell why would you even search your family members or friends?? That's appalling!!
Hear, hear. V unprofessional

@PoppyWoods

I'm not worried about any legal ramifications, there aren't any. Icould literally look up the whole street, it's a publicly accessible register.

Also not worried about how appalled you all are, just genuinely curious as to whether this could happen without her knowledge. Would appreciate anyone in the know to advise

Rather than posting here then telling all responders that you are not interested in their opinions, why not just Google whether or not someone can be declared bankrupt without their partner/spouse knowing, or ask a solicitor. Then get on with your nosey life and God forbid any member of your family or firends entrusted you with any information.

*Sorry, friends

I haven’t read the whole thread, so I’m guessing lots of other people have told you this, but using your access to this information to check on family and friends is massively unethical and completely illegal. If you got caught you could be sacked on the spot for gross misconduct. I can’t believe that wasn’t made crystal clear to you- if you work for a business that is regulated by the FCA you should have had training that covered that.

Tiramiwho · 05/11/2021 10:56

So if you worked at a Doctor's surgery you would search the records of all your family members - even partners of your family? You would wouldn't you? Confused
I can't believe you don't seem to acknowledge you have done wrong here.
Keep out of it. It's none of your business.

BigYellowHat · 05/11/2021 10:59

Why on Earth were you snooping?!! Fair enough if he’s come up on your work list for the day but I’d be furious if someone had snooped on me. You’re bang out of order @PoppyWoods and I think if you tell your SIL then you’re at risk of your sister reporting you. Even if it’s a public document, you looked them up on work time.

logsonlogsoff · 05/11/2021 11:01

Nose.out.

Suspiciousmind20 · 05/11/2021 11:03

You absolutely shouldn’t have looked up people you know. That would be a sackable offence in the NHS. I am surprised you haven’t had training around this.

You have to keep the information to yourself. It would be inappropriate to do otherwise and keep it to yourself. Do not gossip to others about it.

DigitalGhost · 05/11/2021 11:27

Don't do it!
My friend did this exact thing and lost her job when her sister complained.

hopingbutlosing · 05/11/2021 11:29

Oh this thread is back with posters still insisting the OP should be sacked. Confused

oh give it up will you. It is not illegal at all. The information is in the public domain. She would not be sacked either.

You do realise that you can look at the insolvency register at home, in a non work environment dont you? Who are you going to grass me up to for looking at it? My dog? My kids? ooooh mini backinblack your mum has looked up someone on the register, send her to bed with no dinner.

And as for the FCA, they wont care who she has looked up as long as she doesnt disclose it, write it down or leave the information on the bus.

Jesus the hysteria is off the scale.

Funny how it's always the ones who haven't read the full thread who keep repeating incorrect information!

Don't they know it's massively unethical and illegal to not RTFT?
