DD refusing to wear sanitary products

Cocopogo · 02/09/2021 19:28

DD is 12, she’s on her third period and refuses to wear sanitary pads. She says they are uncomfortable. I help her put one on and ensure she has spares etc but then she goes to the bathroom and removes it. She’s possibly got sensory issues too. She has stained my car seat and the carpet due to this. Anyone else had this problem? How did you overcome it?

Period pants are a game changer

WhatsTheBFD · 02/09/2021 19:46

Period pants
Cloth pads

I can’t stand disposable pads, they are grim and make me itch.

gordongrumpy · 02/09/2021 19:46

Tampons. Let the girl try tampons!

WhatsTheBFD · 02/09/2021 19:46

@IWasBornInAThunderstorm because her DD is 12! Christ

Newchances · 02/09/2021 19:47

If period pants are a no go could she try different pads? Sensitive ones, ones with or without wings etc.

TheNarwhalBalloon · 02/09/2021 19:48

Wondering if she has ASD, OP. I know people are quick to jump to diagnose online but this is unusual behaviour and would fit with the sensory issues. If so, this will be a challenging transition for her. I hope you can help her find a solution she is comfortable with.

ExecutiveHodCarrier · 02/09/2021 19:48

Because she’s a 12 year old child and still fairly unfamiliar with the process? And presumably if the DD is finding pads uncomfortable, OP can make sure they’re applied correctly to her DD’s pants to make sure they’re not sticking up or rubbing her? I started my periods as 12 and my mum showed me both pads and tampons and would always help if asked.

Honestly what is it with some posters and their strange questioning of the OP

PinkBuffalo · 02/09/2021 19:48

I really struggle too but cloth pads from cheeky wipes have made a big difference
As she is young the period pants people have been talking about could be worth a try as well

Ethelfromnumber73 · 02/09/2021 19:48

Period pants are really widely available and I'm surprised OP wasn't aware of them. I'm also surprised at the amount of personal detail people include in their replies on posts like this

ExecutiveHodCarrier · 02/09/2021 19:48

^^that was at @IWasBornInAThunderstorm btw

WhatsTheBFD · 02/09/2021 19:48

I helped eldest DD with pads the first few periods, she was 11. It’s quite simple to just sit in the bathroom together and put one on a clean pair of pants to show them.

IWasBornInAThunderstorm · 02/09/2021 19:49

I meant why is she having to help her "put one on"? Not why is she helping her in general! Sorry!

Just wondering if she's struggling with putting a pad on maybe she might find a tampon or mooncup difficult so period pants might be best way forward.

Iliketeaagain · 02/09/2021 19:50

Have you tried different types of pads? I buy DD the teen ones from Lillets and they are much softer (we ran out once and she used one of mine that were in the bathroom and hated them - apparently felt weird and "hard" - whatever that means).

Cocopogo · 02/09/2021 19:50

I’ve suggested tampons and she freaked out at the idea.
I had no idea period pants were a thing (hysterectomy years ago). Can someone please explain a little. How often do they need changing? Won’t they smell if worn for a few hours or could she wear one pair all day at school? Do you just chuck them in the washing machine each day and then switch it on after 5 days?

I also hated pads with a passion. If she’s going as far as refusing to wear one it could be sensory. This is TMI so apologies but I could feel the flow wearing them and it made me feel physically ill. I switched to tampons at a young age.
Let her try tampons and show her a video on how to use them. The ones below are what I’ve always found easiest to use.

It wasn't meant as a why are you helping her?!! It was a why are you helping her?

So if the answer is, she doesn't know how to use them/strugglew that is different to she is so reluctant to use them I have to intervene.

Cocopogo · 02/09/2021 19:51

@Iliketeaagain yes bought her the lillet teens but it doesn’t seem to have helped.

That's a good shout.
DrinkFeckArseGirls · 02/09/2021 19:53

Has anyone suggested period pants?

Wink
SunscreenCentral · 02/09/2021 19:54

I'm old enough to remember when pads were the size maternity pads are now. I remember the sheer horror of them and how upset I was at everything changing. Wouldn't let my mother help. Was putting the "boats" on wrong way round for a while ShockHmmGrin
Not my finest moment.
Hope you find a good solution for your dd OP

Cocopogo · 02/09/2021 19:55

I helped her as she is reluctant to use them and I wanted to check she had one on before she left the house and if there was anything I could do to put it in better so that there was no sticky bits or anything causing more issues. But she still removed it, bled through to the car seat and walked round town without seeming to care about the visible stains.

Yes, they are horrible. Feel awful and cause rashes for some women. I used to have to sew my own, but thankfully there tons of options available for purchase now.

absolutelyknackeredcow · 02/09/2021 19:57

I'm a recent convert to period pants. I have the modibod ones
You wear, rinse and then put in a wash. I have now got enough to do a full period.
They are an investment - but I frequently forget I'm even on my period.
My flow is very uneven so I have really high absorbency ones and then it doesn't matter if I flood
(I'm 42 by the way - can't believe it has taken mankind that long to develop these things )
