Light-hearted disagreement between DH and me!

He says soup is not a meal; it's a starter. I think it can be either and definitely a meal when you include a sandwich.

It’s a lunch meal. Not dinner.

HirplesWithHaggis · 02/09/2021 16:54

My dh's lentil soup is thick enough to pass as dhal. Grin

LadyCatStark · 02/09/2021 16:54

@PurpleDaisies

It’s a lunch meal. Not dinner.
@PurpleDaisies is correct!
Anoisagusaris · 02/09/2021 16:54

Of course it’s a meal - lunch. But not one that would fill many people. And it’s definitely not dinner (unless you are on a very calorie restricting diet).

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 02/09/2021 16:54

Depends on the soup- can of tomato soup with a cracker not really. Homemade chunky soup with a doorstep then most definitely!

Bagelsandbrie · 02/09/2021 16:55

Lunch. Not dinner. I’d be disappointed with just soup for dinner.

londonrach · 02/09/2021 16:55

It's lunch meal or a starter..it's not a dinner unless it's a thick stew

DameAlyson · 02/09/2021 16:55

Not a meal on its own. With a bread roll, it's a light lunch, but not a main meal.

Jaysmith71 · 02/09/2021 16:55

Of course it’s a meal

A course is a course, of course, of course.

Guavaf1sh · 02/09/2021 16:55

It’s not a proper meal at any time of day. It’s a starter

LegendaryReady · 02/09/2021 16:56

Soup and a sandwich is two meals IMO Grin

But I agree only lunchtime meals.

SolitaryTree · 02/09/2021 16:57

Could never eat soup on its own but with some buttered tiger bread or a cheese toastie it’s a good lunch or a light tea if we’ve had a cooked lunch or been out to eat during the day.

GiveMyHeadPeaceffs · 02/09/2021 16:59

It's a meal! Ds and I often have homemade potato and leek soup with a cheese toastie for a quick dinner between school and extracurricular stuff Grin

AiryFairy1 · 02/09/2021 16:59

I love soup for dinner, homemade and chunky with fresh bread and cheese - one of my best weeknight dinners, but DH and the kids vehemently disagree so sadly we never have it 😔

Annoyedanddissapointed · 02/09/2021 16:59

My soup can certainly be dinner. It actually is often. I don't do the blended ones though so plenty to chew in mine always

AlrightThereSkippy · 02/09/2021 16:59

God DAMN it. How am I losing this argument on Mumsnet, famed for its "my roast chicken feeds 75 people with leftovers" reputation GrinGrin?

The soup in question is definitely of the hearty variety and would come with a sandwich on homemade brown bread... Two sandwiches if you wanted. Hmmmm? Am I convincing anyone?

He feels the same way about jacket potatoes which I thought was madness. Now I'm questioning everything I ever believed 😱!

My dh's lentil soup is thick enough to pass as dhal

Oh that sounds "filling"'Grin

Soup for lunch Is a meal not for dinner though

mustlovegin · 02/09/2021 17:00

Soup is not a meal and would not fill most adults up

Mrsjayy · 02/09/2021 17:01

Baked potato is definitely dinner territory although my Dh disagrees too 🙄

Palavah · 02/09/2021 17:01

Of course it's a meal and that's not conditional on sandwiches. A light meal, I grant you, but perfectly legitimate.

PurpleDaisies · 02/09/2021 17:02

What actually is the soup?

Multiple sandwiches are not better than a single one for making a more filling meal. You need to add chips to a sandwich to make it an evening meal, and then only a proper sandwich like a fish finger one.

I am surprised by how strongly I feel about this!

Charm23 · 02/09/2021 17:03

Depends really. I wouldn't call it a dinner meal, but it would be suitable for lunch especially if it was a lighter broth type soup and had a sandwich with it. However, if it's more of a homemade thick soup/stew with dumplings then yeah, I'd serve it for dinner (in colder months!).

BeautifulandWilfulandDead · 02/09/2021 17:04

It entirely depends on the soup!

AlrightThereSkippy · 02/09/2021 17:04

I am thoroughly enjoying how strongly you feel about this purple.

It is a very hearty, chicken broth with leeks, carrots, celery, parsley and grainy soup mix. Sandwiches would be cheese or ham. I don't do chips, however, I could add potatoes to the soup?

I sometimes have soup with plenty of cheese melted in or yoghurt etc. It’s a great meal (lunch or dinner) if the rest of the days eating has been more substantial.
Not sure I’ve ever had soup in a restaurant (other than gazpacho or blanco)
