To find it irritating when people refer to their child as “letter” only?

Am I the only one that finds this irritating?

So if my child was called Henry I’d refer to him in messages as “H”. I don’t see the point in shortening.. my whole NCT group does it, I find it bizarre when the name won’t take long to write!? Just me?

Bizarre..

Mamanyt · 31/08/2021 22:46

It's written, not verbal, and no worse than your use of "NCT." MY GOD, the DH and DP and MIL and DS and DD here must send you up a wall! YABU. OH, sorry, You Are Being Unreasonable.

Enko · 31/08/2021 22:48

As amusing as the NCT nark is they officially changed their name to NCT quite a few years ago (I was a trustee at the time) So the correct name for NCT is NCT NOT national Childbirth trust (that is the original name but no longer the charities name)

Having said that. I don't mind when friends type say " A" instead of Allanah I know who they are talking about.

Wazzag · 31/08/2021 22:56

It irrationally annoys me! I know a mum that does that but with everyone she talks about. Don't call me W... My name is Wazza!!

MatildaOfFlanders · 31/08/2021 23:09

It irritates me when people do it at the bottom of emails, although not anywhere near as much as people who write KR instead of kind regards.

Cherryberrybonbon · 31/08/2021 23:12

@ATieLikeRichardGere really? Self absorbed for using an initial?
It’s just like a nickname

SoupDragon · 31/08/2021 23:59

I'm currently sniggering at the people who are complaining about DH/DS/OP etc who use the assorted abbreviations themselves 😂

MistySkiesAfterRain · 01/09/2021 00:05

@MirandaWest

I refer to mine as A and B quite often.
Are those their intitials or do you just mean child A and child B Grin
PugInTheHouse · 01/09/2021 00:48

My DS1s name is a long H name and his nickname is actually H so we would refer to him as H quite often anyway. in texts I may shorten DS2s name to the initial just for speed but only to close family and friends.

Harmonypuss · 01/09/2021 00:54

I agree OP!
I'm one of those people who doesn't like to use the abbreviations regularly used on here like DS or DC, etc (although I've clearly used one at the beginning of this post), I much prefer to write as I was taught 40 years ago and type 'son(s)' or 'children'.
I do this in texts, WhatsApp messages, emails, on social media and even if I handwrite a note or letter.
I feel that if one uses full (correctly spelled) words and punctuation, it is difficult for the message to be misunderstood.

LoveFall · 01/09/2021 01:20

I agree too but I am probably a bit irrational about it. Grandkids' other grandmother does this, usually first and second initial and for some reason it really irritates me.

BadLad · 01/09/2021 04:15

@Ccoffee217

My question wasn’t referring to acronyms such as NCT, NHS etc, totally get why they’re shortened.. just people using a letter for their child’s name. Interesting to see all the votes!

@Cookiecrumblepie Especially when someone refers to their husbands name as a letter and then I’m just lost 😂

NCT and NHS aren't acronyms.
starlight13 · 01/09/2021 09:37

I agree. Those parents are oblivious to how ridiculous they sound.
Perhaps they regret the choice of their child's name?

Wantthisfriend · 01/09/2021 10:10

GrinGrin

ATieLikeRichardGere · 01/09/2021 13:16

@Cherryberrybonbon I think it feels that way because for the writer’s convenience, the reader has got to do the work of figuring out what they mean or is just expected to know. I accept that might not be true, but that is just how it feels.

Cherryberrybonbon · 01/09/2021 14:14

@ATieLikeRichardGere I see what you mean. I would never shorten my child’s name to a letter to someone Who wouldn’t know who I meant, just close friends really. I’d find it a bit weird someone calling a child a nickname who I’ve never met

jo3009 · 01/09/2021 14:22

I hate when someone on fb is wishing you a happy birthday, and they just write HB. Why bother,!? 😡

Keelslambo · 01/09/2021 22:21

I do it, especially if some kids name is difficult to spell or it’s long.
I have a baby and a toddler so my time is very limited. Don’t have time for full sentences half the time lol. Anything to save a bit of time.

Cherrysoup · 01/09/2021 23:03

I find it extremely annoying when people say ‘my son/my daughter’ all the time, instead of using their name. ‘My son is going to visit his Uni campus this weekend’. Yes, I know, because I know ‘your son’ and have met him many times. Why not just say ‘Joe is visiting his uni’. ‘My son’ is used multiple times. Loads of people I know do this. I find it very odd.
