To find it irritating when people refer to their child as “letter” only?

Am I the only one that finds this irritating?

So if my child was called Henry I’d refer to him in messages as “H”. I don’t see the point in shortening.. my whole NCT group does it, I find it bizarre when the name won’t take long to write!? Just me?

🤣🤣 wowwwwww some people really do just love to moan about anything they can find!!

I call my son by his initial sometimes on fb and places because he has quite an unusual name that isn't stupid, and I don't want it to become a popular one!

So sorry if it offends you 🤣😝🤦‍♀️

I have several children and I do this of texting my own mum, or one of my mum friends, as it's just easier than typing out two or three names and helps to keep the texts from turning into into essays!

Peanutsandchilli · 31/08/2021 19:17

I'd rather they used initials than ds or dd. I find that incredibly irritating.

Angryfrommanchester1 · 31/08/2021 19:19

@malmi

"NCT"? Do you mean the National Childbirth Trust?
😆
Butchyrestingface · 31/08/2021 19:20

@Ccoffee217

It makes me cringe big time, hence me writing this post. 😂

I’m also the sort of person who gets overly annoyed at how much “super” is currently used.. but maybe that’s another post for another day 😂

I'm with you on super.

And ONLY super.

Barrequeen · 31/08/2021 19:21

Oh honestly! The whole world does this it saves time! Idk, lol, afk it’s the world we live in!

InglouriousBasterd · 31/08/2021 19:29

It irritates the hell out of me and I could never explain why, there is no reason.

puglovesbooks · 31/08/2021 19:33

My husband and I even refer to them by their initials when talking about them to each other 😅 in my head it's like a term of endearment and I had no idea anyone might object.

2bazookas · 31/08/2021 19:33

It's a question of discretion and the child's privacy surely?

JeanneDoe · 31/08/2021 19:40

Yes. Wrecks my head too.

JedEye · 31/08/2021 19:45

It’s just quicker. I do it a lot.

Although you can of course just add those long names to the text shortcuts on your keyboard.

I’ve added my email address as a shortcut so I don’t have to type the whole thing out. I’m a bit lazy though Grin

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 31/08/2021 19:57

I do it all the time especially if referring to both. They've got long names, K & S is much quicker to write!

Thoranddrjones · 31/08/2021 20:14

What do you have against Beyoncé??!! 😀

Clevercubs1 · 31/08/2021 20:23

I refer to mine as H and B. TBH I didn't start that until they were about 8 though (they're 13 and 15 now). I also used to refer to them as pink and blue.

Pigflewpast · 31/08/2021 20:24

I call my son B more than his full name, it’s the shortened version of his name the same way my other dc have 3 letter shortenings, just the way it works.
I often use their initial in messages, too many dc with long names to write them all out, and autocorrect doesn’t often get them right. I wouldn’t to people who don’t know them.

WidMuthBae · 31/08/2021 20:24

I do it. But I use capital letters and punctuate texts so feel this balances it out... quicker but still good English Wink

dizzydizzydizzy · 31/08/2021 20:28

YABU. Why would this irritate anyone?

Bangolads · 31/08/2021 20:36

This post is up there with the strangest I think 🤷🏼‍♀️ Who cares about this!!!!?

BiscoffAnythingIsTheWayForward · 31/08/2021 20:39

Can’t get bothered over this 😆 I have three boys and if I’m typing a message talking about all of them I use their first letter. If just a short message I’ll type the whole name.

LimeRedBanana · 31/08/2021 20:47

OK, I get it really annoys you, OP. But post about it on Mumsnet annoying…?

Here’s what I suggest you do. You reprimand your friends every time they do it. Let them know you’re not OK with it, and could they please write all children’s names out in full from here on in. If they slip back into bad, old ways, you will tell them off. This is a courtesy heads-up.

Because you’re not going to change the world by posting on MN.

SecretKeeper1 · 31/08/2021 21:01

It is nowhere near as annoying as being a lazy bastard and typing DS instead of son, or DM instead of mum.

Yorkshiretolondon · 31/08/2021 22:02

Oops we actually call our boy H…(& even H-y). Not just write it in messages….. he’s Harris btw…..

Pinkfluff76 · 31/08/2021 22:04

I agree OP! Especially if it’s in a fb group and you don’t know the person so you think it’s to protect their real name possibly but then they post pics face and all!!
