To find it irritating when people refer to their child as “letter” only?

Am I the only one that finds this irritating?

So if my child was called Henry I’d refer to him in messages as “H”. I don’t see the point in shortening.. my whole NCT group does it, I find it bizarre when the name won’t take long to write!? Just me?

My mum still calls me Big A sometimes. I'm an A, and when I was very small I spotted that a telegraph pole near our house looked like a big A (it has a diagonal support and a cross bar) and shouted Big A! Big A! Every time we went past. I'm 49 and still get called Big A.

Lonelylooloo · 30/08/2021 19:49

I do this in all my conversations but it’s just because I get so fed up of typing my kids names 45 million times 😬🙄
Also because some of my friends have those super annoying ‘unique’ names no one except their parents will ever remember how to spell!

Ihaveaquestion77 · 30/08/2021 19:49

Yes! I don't know why it annoys me but it does.

Lonelylooloo · 30/08/2021 19:50

*friends kids

LizzieVereker · 30/08/2021 19:50

Is it just when they’re texting/WhatsApping? I think I’d be fine with that because it is quicker than typing out a full name especially you are as shit at typing as me However if it’s when they’re speaking “Oh H won’t eat white bread!” I would considered that a bit wanky and self absorbed. But I am quite judgey 😁

PrancerandDancer · 30/08/2021 19:51

Haha this (irrationally) annoys me too. No idea why. I just really don't like it! At first I saw it on social media and thought maybe it was a privacy thing. I just think I love DD's name too much to shorten it to just one letter!

Tiana4 · 30/08/2021 19:55

Yabu
Depends on how much time I've got when texting . Far quicker to type initials than dork out the whole names, which sometimes get autocorrected - one of my friends DD is Grace - often directs to Grave so we all prefer to type G when typing list of names!

Presumably they are friends and you know their children's names and everyone uses their names when talking.

Blerg · 30/08/2021 19:55

I don’t like it, that might be partly because it doesn’t work with one of my kid’s initial!

Kerberos · 30/08/2021 19:56

Mine are numbered too. I figure most colleagues don't know their names so it's easier to refer to them by number.

Just worked out I'm the office weirdo.

Crunchymum · 30/08/2021 19:56

It doesn't bother me at all.

However, threads on here that have an opening post containing anything along the lines of "let's call them E, K and S" gets closed down immediately.

Moelwynbach · 30/08/2021 19:57

Don't find it annoying at all it protects my sons identity as he is adopted. Sorry so sorry its so irritating to you. You mustn't haveamy actual things worry about.

TheWayTheLightFalls · 30/08/2021 19:58

I'm coming back to this thread to (shamefully) admit that the one time I heard this done "live" / in person to a child, I did find it odd and it stuck with me. It seemed a bit affected - "B, would you like a breadstick?" - when saying "Bee" and saying "Ben" take the same amount of time.

TheWayTheLightFalls · 30/08/2021 19:59

The OP seems to mean on Whatsapp/text when communicating with people she and her child already knows, so ID protection doesn't really factor into it.

Chewbecca · 30/08/2021 19:59

Blimey, I do this all the time, for my DC & DH, as well as my DS(is) and DN(eices and nephews) Grin

ArabellaScott · 30/08/2021 20:02

@malmi

"NCT"? Do you mean the National Childbirth Trust?
Grin
BeingATwatItsABingThing · 30/08/2021 20:05

@romdowa

It would cause utter confusion in my family. Both me and my sibling have the same first initial 🤣🤣🤣 bit of a weird thing to do though. You should suggest the mumsnet way, dc1, 2 and 3 😁
Same with my family. DH and I have the same first initials as DSis and BIL. To add to the confusion, DSIL and I have the same first and last name…
Ccoffee217 · 30/08/2021 20:05

It’s interesting as a few people have mentioned it’s so much quicker to type the initial than the child’s name, but it is really any quicker? Maybe half a second if you’re a fairly quick typer on your phone.

I think I agree on it being impersonal, it’s a child’s name why not use their name?

OP posts:
YouMeandtheSpew · 30/08/2021 20:06

I do it. Not verbally but in messages. My son’s name is 8 letters long, it definitely does take longer to type.

YouMeandtheSpew · 30/08/2021 20:13

Mind you I think some people do feel similarly to you because a friend recently said to me ‘next time give your child a name you can be arsed to type’ Grin but then he gave his son an actual dog’s name (like Rover - not actually Rover but that level of dog name) so I’m not taking any shit about names from him.

Ericaceae · 30/08/2021 20:18

I do this all the time with family and friends, partly because one of my DD's nicknames is "Hiffer" as in "h for her first name", which she shouted as a toddler whenever she saw a letter H. It's a bit weird to type out, and erm, prone to unfortunate autocorrect. So H = Hiffer.

Thatsplentyjack · 30/08/2021 20:30

Yup I absolutely hate it, and yes, I am irritated easily.

SillyBub · 30/08/2021 20:31

One of my DC's names begins with an I (a capital i) so it can either look like a lower case L or look like I'm typing about myself so I don't do it!

Demelza82 · 30/08/2021 20:35

I do this all the time without thinking. I can't imagine why anybody would be in the slightest bit bothered by it, fucking hell.

nonono1 · 30/08/2021 20:36

I also find it irritating and don’t even know why!

Threelittleducks · 30/08/2021 20:37

My son is O. I call him O, my husband sometimes does, and people who love him do too. My best friend calls him O, and I love it - I guess I see it as a sign of affection.
