To find it irritating when people refer to their child as “letter” only?

Am I the only one that finds this irritating?

So if my child was called Henry I’d refer to him in messages as “H”. I don’t see the point in shortening.. my whole NCT group does it, I find it bizarre when the name won’t take long to write!? Just me?

Funnily enough I was just talking about this to DH (sorry, darling husband). We thought it was a safeguarding thing. I understand that with small children in a public Facebook group but not so much when you are talking about your adult child who is about to go to university, or it's a private whatsapp group.

I also thought it a shame that our local school didn't publish the full names of the people who got stellar GCSE grades - eg they only said Helen C or David F. I know that's for safeguarding reasons, but actually you might as well not bother as nobody other than their immediate peers will know who they are.

This other one thinks Gloria in hymns is sung for her. Gloria In excels deo was obviously written for her. Phew!

Bobmonkfish · 31/08/2021 17:54

I am easily irritated by things like this but would say I type my kids' full names 80% of the time. Must remember to for the other 20%, along with all the other Mumsnet rules I have learned Smile

?? Got any real problems!?

Our local schools do this if theres someone in the year whose surname can't be known so the whole year group is the same rather than just one or two children which I think is much more inclusive.

😉

Movinghouseatlast · 31/08/2021 18:01

This reminds me of a wonderfully grumpy old man I knew, who upon hearing the name someone had given their child said " What a horrible name. I'd rather have a fucking number".

HaveringWavering · 31/08/2021 18:04

@malmi

"NCT"? Do you mean the National Childbirth Trust?

MasterChefz · 31/08/2021 18:04

I would rather read that than someone refer to their child as " little shit" or worse ..

An initial is fine .

pollymere · 31/08/2021 18:07

I've done it on FB so people can't learn my child's name. I might do it on a group chat if I wasn't sure of its members.

HaveringWavering · 31/08/2021 18:13

I would do it in a WhatsApp chat or my Mums’ Facebook group because it’s quicker and they all know his name so I work in the basis that they don’t need to be reminded of it every time we communicate. I’m a huge pedant, hate text spk, incorrect grammar and general sloppiness in written communications but I really can’t see a problem with this one.

You do realise that an acronym is to stop you having to type more than one word in full; doing this stops you having to type one word in full. It is exactly the same principle.

FreddieMercurysCat · 31/08/2021 18:15

I keep well away from other parents, so didn’t realise this was a thing. However, thinking about it, I don’t really get it either. I always refer to my children by their names. Always have. But, each to their own 🙂

Justgivemeamoment · 31/08/2021 18:17

Yes annoys me too and no idea why. And I still sometimes do it - why !?

Luckily both kids have the same initial so would be confusing in some conversations !

MrsTophamHat · 31/08/2021 18:20

I don't mind it informally but I can't stand the way our nursery talks refers to the children on Facebook posts as "Child H played in the mud kitchen", "Child J scored a goal" etc.

As someone who has worked in children's safeguarding, this is how subjects of Serious Caae Reviews are referenced and I would rather they used the initial on its own personally.

kimmsutt · 31/08/2021 18:21

I also do on social media, ie ‘L looks so cute here’ so as not to out the name of the child. Also my son has an ‘é’ in his name so it’s a right PITA!

Doifollowrule · 31/08/2021 18:21

One of my son's has 11 letters in his name and predictive text always brings up something else. The initial is definitely faster when replying to grandparents etc

angielou791417 · 31/08/2021 18:25

I find that annoying too! Also can't stand it when people say someone, as in " someone's tired" or " someone ate the cake " when that person is quite clearly there and everyone knows its them ( usually a child) know its strange but it makes me cringe !

GreenBiro · 31/08/2021 18:28

I actually call my DS by his first initial sometimes!! Is that really bad???

Velvetbee · 31/08/2021 18:29

My 4 have longish names. It saves time. However I also call them Mr G, Mr E as nicknames.
I don’t care if other people don’t like it.

Toomuchtrouble4me · 31/08/2021 18:30

Yep, just you.

Mantlemoose · 31/08/2021 18:37

Weird to me too. Also weird is people chosing nicknames for their kids, why bother calling them e.g. Frederick only to call them Fred. Just call them Fred............

Thorinfling · 31/08/2021 18:39

Fortunately my son's name and the initial are the same sound so can get away with either. I do also call him by the dog's name on occasion if I'm flustered. He answers to both now! Grin

itsgettingwierd · 31/08/2021 18:40

I also do it!

Flipthatpancakehighboy · 31/08/2021 18:46

I do it, my Dd has a long name though and it’s annoying to constantly write it

SoupDragon · 31/08/2021 18:57

@ATieLikeRichardGere

I can’t stand this! It comes across somehow as self absorbed. It probably isn’t but that’s how it reads to me.
How is it self absorbed?
