To find it irritating when people refer to their child as “letter” only?

Am I the only one that finds this irritating?

So if my child was called Henry I’d refer to him in messages as “H”. I don’t see the point in shortening.. my whole NCT group does it, I find it bizarre when the name won’t take long to write!? Just me?

I totally agree. I’m a teacher and in my school there is a trend towards parents and staff only using the initial of students (Eg: BG, AL) when they email. Lots of the students have the same initials so it is really very confusing. Perhaps understandable when writing about something sensitive/ confidential but everyone seems to just default to initials even for very mundane topics and I just find it irrationally annoying.

MurielSpriggs · 30/08/2021 20:40

@Nahhh

Somewhat like DC on here Wink
Agreed, although this is much worse due to the irritating addition of "darling" (which always sounds sarcastic to my mind).
mafted · 30/08/2021 20:43

I'm guilty of it sometimes when I'm texting.

A Facebook friend always does it in her posts and will post little quotes from her DC with #Disms which I find cringy. They also call themselves the Surname Crew Hmm

Meraas · 30/08/2021 20:43

DC sounds phonetically better than just C though, don’t think anyone is actually saying darling in their mind, it’s silent.

Bentoforthehorde · 30/08/2021 20:43

Haha! I do this! People get annoyed at the strangest things.

Bayleaf25 · 30/08/2021 20:44

I do it, it’s definitely quicker than typing in full all the time. Don’t see the problem?

ThorsLeftNut · 30/08/2021 20:45

I refer to mine as 1 and 2.

I am, and I like to type it out in full in Mumsnet replies to remind people that it's awful Grin
Recessed · 30/08/2021 20:46

I see this on FB parenting groups and it irritates me every time. I have no idea why but you are not alone! I physically wince/scrunch my nose up while I'm reading it? Confused random irritant but there you go.

ejhhhhh · 30/08/2021 20:46

Why would you mind this? I don't get it.

Dongdingdong · 30/08/2021 20:47

My son is O.

You named your son O?

O dear!

Meraas · 30/08/2021 20:48

@MurielSpriggs fair enough, but MN didn’t even DH, DW, DC, they were around long before MN existed,

NeverDropYourMooncup · 30/08/2021 20:48

Somebody I work with habitually gets my name wrong in emails (which have the name I'm known by in the address and my signoff) by writing it in full (and still getting it wrong), nearly getting it right but adding the wrong final letter, etc.

I now refer to him as his initial alone. No idea whether he's noticed, but it's certainly made my emails slightly quicker to type.

nonono1 · 30/08/2021 20:48

I’ve no idea. It just makes me cringe and I don’t know why!

annacondom · 30/08/2021 20:50

This is a new one on me. I would find it annoying too, I think.

GCAutist · 30/08/2021 20:50

I do it especially in virtual circles where people may not know us. It’s not for me to broadcast their identifiable info such as name.

Coffeeanddarkchoc · 30/08/2021 20:51

Just realised I do this with one child but not the other. I only do it when texting DP and I think its because he has a 2 syllable name but theres no nice way to shorten it for a nickname.

Ccoffee217 · 30/08/2021 20:53

It makes me cringe big time, hence me writing this post. 😂

I’m also the sort of person who gets overly annoyed at how much “super” is currently used.. but maybe that’s another post for another day 😂

I find it irritating too! I'm not sure why. I always feel like sometimes they're trying to conceal their actual name, you aren't allowed to know it 😅

It reminds me of a the slightly pompous secretary of the local golf club typing up the minutes of the committee meeting and referring to people by initials!

I can only thank god that "super" has taken over from "crazy". I can't stand either, but "super hot" is a whole lot better than "crazy hot"!
Sprogonthetyne · 30/08/2021 20:55

I find it weird. Especially the people who claim it protects their privacy or will stop them been identified, when it's on a Facebook page with literally everything else about their lives. Often they also posted the child's full name and weight on the day they were born, but somehow think if they refer to the toddler as an initial a year later no one will have a clue who the child in the photo is.

QueenPeary · 30/08/2021 21:05

One of DD’s friends’ mums does it verbally and I don’t like it - though maybe partly because she’s a very strict scary mum and I don’t like her either!

Actually the only other parent I’ve known to do it was a former friend who I don’t see now as I thought she was an awful mum!

Not wishing to cast aspersions on anyone here who does it, but I clearly have bad associations with it…

Jourdain11 · 30/08/2021 21:05

I don't do this because mine are all Ms (not deliberate) and nobody would know which I was talking about. Although they have been referred to by other parents as the M&Ms Wink

QueenPeary · 30/08/2021 21:06

I can kind of understand it when texting if you’re trying to be quick, especially to the child’s other parent. Calling them it as their name though - nooooo
