Crack on. The police were everywhere in the City today and all buildings locked so the silly arseholes couldn't get near it for their pointless damage Grin

lannistunut · 24/08/2021 20:34

Do they advertise everything they are going to do on each day @54321nought?

DuckDuckGooses · 24/08/2021 20:35

Headed up by a diesel driving hypocrite? Crack on Grin

doingnothing · 24/08/2021 20:37

Do what you like, why ask us?

Flatdisco · 24/08/2021 20:46

Yes you are still unreasonable

iheartredsquirrels · 24/08/2021 20:50

XR ? They can all fuck right off.

Darker · 24/08/2021 22:29

Place marking.

It’s a shame this new thread has such a hostile vibe.

lannistunut · 24/08/2021 22:30

@Darker yes a shame, it was an interesting thread I thought.

I have thought more about XR this year than any other year in part as a result of the thread.

Bluebells1 · 24/08/2021 22:31

Still twats. Still can't stand them wankers.

AramintaLee · 24/08/2021 22:42

They're absolute plonkers. Caused upheaval in my city a few years back and were then busted filling their huge lorry up with diesel at the local petrol station.

I'm all for saving the environment and highlighting the climate crisis but they go about it in a way that switches people off.

Darker · 24/08/2021 22:51

Do those of you who object to XR think the threat from climate change is not real? Or that it’s not very serious or urgent?

Hawkins001 · 24/08/2021 22:53

I can understand the perspectives and frustrations of different groups, but when it comes to protests in general, how does vandalism, violence and or blockading cities, highways ect help further their goals ? I know it's not representative of all the members of the protests.

SpittinKitten · 24/08/2021 22:54

I think climate change is completely real and obviously serious and urgent, @Darker
Absolutely loathe XR and their methods, they don't actually achieve anything except getting people's backs up.

BigGreen · 24/08/2021 22:56

XR isn't a 'they' - it's just ordinary people, like me. Plenty of Mumsnetters go, as past threads have shown. We are just people that have had enough of inaction, especially from the government and we want to be heard (whether it makes change or not, it's about trying something).

We are not crusty, hippy, twats, plonkers, arseholes or fuckers. Personally I just really care about the world I'm leaving to my kids. We are on a knife edge, it's now or never to keep fossil fuels in the ground and avoid the worst effects of climate change. The fires in Greece, Turkey, Siberia and the US, and the floods in Belgium and Germany are just the start.

^Completely agree with this

Climate change is happening, we all know that it's very real but these idiots are going about it the wrong way. Disruption, to thousands of people criminal damage [the red paint episode], gluing themselves to trains and god knows what. What have they actually achieved? Happy to be educated as long as there is evidence to back a claim up and not a lot of guff from sm and fb.
DuckDuckGooses · 24/08/2021 23:04

Climate change is obviously real - how much we contribute is the real stickler for me (and especially when you look at the cycles of extreme heat and cooling the earth has gone through for thousands of years pre industrialisation it's a bit unclear).

However if you look at the UKs contribution to global emissions we rank so low on there that the XR protestors are just turning the public against them - they're not protesting against the countries or industries across the globe causing these emissions - they're sat in london blocking roads and public transport for ordinary working people.

There's no clear message I find from XR on what they want to do internationally - and then when you've got one of the founders on live tv saying she drives a diesel car because she can't afford an electric one (like a lot of the public!) and needs the car as she can't rely on public transport where she is, so you really think it's going to inspire others to make a positive change in their lives? When you've got celebrity faces flying on jets to protests do you think it'll make joe blogs want to join in? When you've got protestors using single use plastic bottles and leaving them in the streets, littering with food wrappers etc do you think the people watching see this as a positive movement? XR come across as a joke to be honest.

Grin well that explains a lot

Keep banging those drums. I wonder who shall fly in this time

@BigGreen

I'm sure there's some lovely people involved.
My personal lived experience of the XR founders and a few heavily involved XR organisers/'professional ' activists over the last decade has been that they absolutely were and still are twats, plonkers, arseholes and fuckers. Really exploitative dangerous bastards.

Stay safe out there.

No, we don't, but that doesn't stop us thinking XR are useless twats doing zero to help.
Flyingantday · 24/08/2021 23:11

If they were really clever they would cyber attack large polluting companies or take non-essential consumer websites offline causing disruption or loss of revenue without any extra pollution, public littering or stopping people on low incomes getting to work or patients to hospital appointments.

Flyingantday · 24/08/2021 23:12

But not such a fun day out I guess

Flyingantday yes they could

But it doesn’t really have the hippy carnival vibe so a bit boring

54321nought · 24/08/2021 23:15

They are not out to educate, or persuade the public, they are out to disrupt, and get government attention
