Let me explain. I need a new measuring jug. The measures have been washed off my glass ones and my plastic one is not easy to read. They're cheap yet I have been struggling for about 2 years and never really sure I've measured correctly meaning some failed bread and the odd annoyance most days. Why haven't o bought one? I fear it's symptomatic of other flaws

@aworldofourown

Please tell us what a land yard is and what you use it for - Google is no help!

TheOpportuneMoment · 23/08/2021 23:01

A decent sized casserole dish. We had a nice big one but then moved to a house with an induction hob where it no longer works and I've been meaning to buy one since then. Instead I've been faffing around with multiple saucepans every time I want to do a big batch cook. And I know you can buy things that make pans etc work on induction hobs as well, but again I just haven't.

100% relatable. I had a fridge that measured out ml and fluid Oz. It was wonderful, we upgraded and the new one doesn’t. I have a glass jar which does the job but plastic ones have cracked with hot water. My CBA to replace is a garlic press. The fantastic metal one I had snapped into a bowl of food resulting in having to throw the dish away. The replacement was rubbish so I use the finest holes on the grater now.

I reckon land yard must be lanyard!

SeoultoSeoul · 23/08/2021 23:04

@Camenbertsmuggler

A sieve, my husband used the old one to sieve paint last year, and now I am sieve-less

Coasters for drinks in my living room. The ones I’ve got are old, wooden, faded and look a bit manky, but i can’t find any new ones that I like anywher….Also peg bag, I finally got a washing line up which I love cos it saves me using the dryer and the clothes smell nice and fresh , but the peg bag I’ve got is an old one that my mum gave me that comes off the line every time there’s a gust of wind, it’s got like a children’s coat hanger on it, but my mum gave it me when I got the washing line up she seemed pleased with herself cos she said “don’t be wasting money on a peg bag or pegs cos I’ve got one you can have and I’ve got loads of spare pegs” But I want a nice water proof one and new pegs that aren’t cracked … but can’t bring myself to buy a new one 😆 #itsahardlife

Goddammit I keep forgetting ice trays! And bras and make up sponges and an ironing board and a Swiffer. I have got a space heater and a decent fan. Need some shoes though I've only got three pairs of havaiania flip flops. Oh crap I need some towels mine are very old.

Daisy62 · 23/08/2021 23:07

This is called being an under-buyer. It's possible to be an under-buyer in one category (eg. basic kitchen stuff) and an over-buyer in another category (eg. shoes)

My recent triumphs are a new broom (to replace the one that had been horrible for years) and a new kettle filter. Total of £12 well spent.

Wineandroses3 · 23/08/2021 23:07

Also I bought a really good pair of food scissors from Lakeland and my tosser sorry I mean husband went and use them to open a paint tin so now they’re blunt and have got paint on them 😡😡😡fuming hun

MarieKlepto · 23/08/2021 23:07

Dust pan and brush. The one in the house is so old and overused it probably harbours diseases currently not known to man. Was so excited when we were able to get up to our holiday home post-Covid again (sounds grand, basically akin to a garage on a scrap on field) that I went crazy in one of the discount home shops and spent a whole £4.99. It is a totally amazing machine (Flash brand if anyone is interested Smile.

Whatup · 23/08/2021 23:07

Why would you sieve paint?

keeping2chevronsapart · 23/08/2021 23:07

Why don't we all use this thread to force us into buying the things we need tonight. I'm going on amazon right now to get my new pegs!

mrsm43s · 23/08/2021 23:08

To all the people with rusty, manky baking trays - ditch them and replace with pyrex baking trays. So much better.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 23/08/2021 23:08

This isn’t even a stealth boast, just a boast, but last month I finally bought some new kitchen scissors after MONTHS of three separate pairs which were all equally useless. So proud of myself.

WineInTheBlood · 23/08/2021 23:09

I really need a peg bag. I keep saying I'm going to have a go at making one as I have a sewing machine I've never used.... but I really should just buy a peg bag at this point.

TheChosenTwo · 23/08/2021 23:10

Now @Wineandroses3 coasters are a boring item that I blew a lot of money on a couple of years ago, the Anthropologie geode ones! I think they were £14 each and I bought 8 of them cos they were pretty and I wanted them Grin
I have no problem wasting money on pretty stuff! It’s just when it comes to practical ‘boring’ spending that I falter. Like a claw clip for my hair that I use to separate it when straightening - I sat on my last one and now have to tie it out of the way to section it, it’s a fucking pain, they cost about £3 and every time I sit down to do my hair I curse that I never get round to buying myself a new one because it’s a hassle to tie it and then I end up pulling random bits down with the straightener and looking like worzel gummidge Angry

CorianderBee · 23/08/2021 23:10

A screen protector. Still have the old one on my phone and it's cracked to shit, but I just cba

Goldenhedgehogs · 23/08/2021 23:10

I find spending money on kitchen roll the height of luxury! I buy them as a treat for myself to get through the school holidays. I know it is ridiculous as we quite happily spend money on a champagne subscription service for goodness sake! I do know this just makes me sound like a right knob

Whatup · 23/08/2021 23:11

I need to do a charity shop haul. Someones rubbish someone else's treasure!

2reefsin30knots · 23/08/2021 23:13

We needed a new bulb for the utility room (different type to the rest of the house) for a good couple of YEARS. YEARS doing the laundry in deep gloom. It has no window- we just borrowed light from the kitchen.

We finally bought one a couple of weeks ago. I literally feel like a god every time I shed light on my laundry. Grin

rjacksmiss · 23/08/2021 23:13

@piefacedClique

A battery to stop my smoke alarm beeping!
Same 😫
Threearm · 23/08/2021 23:13

Knickers. I resent buying them so I put it off.

WorriedMillie · 23/08/2021 23:15

I’ve inherited my father’s “make do and mend” attitude. So many things are bodged together with gaffer tape/baling twine 😂

I remember dad getting his friend to weld together an old potato peeler, him and mum had for a wedding present (1964). It’s still going strong now 😂

plominoagain · 23/08/2021 23:15

A funnel - DH ‘borrowed’ my jam funnel to put petrol in the chainsaw without spilling it everywhere - like I’m ever going to use it for food again - and I keep forgetting to replace it .

That and a colander . I’ve been wrestling with a one handled colander for about a year now .
