Let me explain. I need a new measuring jug. The measures have been washed off my glass ones and my plastic one is not easy to read. They're cheap yet I have been struggling for about 2 years and never really sure I've measured correctly meaning some failed bread and the odd annoyance most days. Why haven't o bought one? I fear it's symptomatic of other flaws
Tell me yours and make me feel less of a weirdo

Re smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, we change the batteries every year on August 1st, ( and the cat flap)

Bluelightfairy · 24/08/2021 18:16

Hi, you could weigh your liquids. 1g is 1ml for most water based things. Much more accurate too.

nancybotwinbloom · 24/08/2021 18:19

@Maverick66

Towels. I really struggle to replace my towels and when I do buy new ones I might keep them 2 years before using them .it's obviously something from my childhood because my sister is obsessed with buying towels and always having 'good' towels.
I am the same! I hate buying towels. I put it off for months.

I eventually bought four new massive ones from Homesense. £60!! I just resent it.

And they feel too fluffy to dry you! They are clearly too good quality as they are not losing their fluff but they just don't dry very well!

Yesitsbess · 24/08/2021 18:22

A mop. I don't even know why, I look at mops but don't buy them.

Bertiebiscuit · 24/08/2021 18:24

Washing up bowl - mine is at least 15 years old and looks really manky but I just can't face paying for one and carting it home - ludicrous - generally hate "wasting" money on kitchen stuff like oven gloves, washing up brush etc...........

AnxiousPixie · 24/08/2021 18:29

Oven gloves, mine have had a hole in the middle for ages, I have to be really careful not to burn the palm of my hand!

WildeWitch · 24/08/2021 18:30

A whisk. Mine broke ages ago and everything I've needed to whisk since I've struggled with a fork as I just seem incapable of replacing my whisk!

gogohm · 24/08/2021 18:34

Lemon juicer, I'm still using my hand having mislaid mine in a house move 15 years ago, they are £3 max

GalaPie · 24/08/2021 18:56

Vegetable knife
The end 2mm of mine has cracked off, but I keep struggling on with it.
**@rosegoldwatcher* @Pucarbuile* I have literally bought one of those foot scrubbers last week. Its made out of silicon and it has gone into my top 3 best things ever that I have brought.
This sounds fab. Is it quite big?
And do you have a link please

@Ratonastick

I need a new yard broom. I moved into this house 5 years ago and brought the disgusting, rusty, half bald one with me. They are less than a tenner but every time I see one in B&Q I think “naaah, I’ll get it next time”. During the time I have been thinking this I have bought 2 different mops, a steam mop, a fancy battery powered whirly floor mopper, a rubber broom, a feather cobweb thing, a stiff dome shaped cobweb thing and a special thing for cleaning bathroom tiles. I am not normally deficient in devices for surface cleaning but a yard broom seems to defeat me,
I recently needed a new yard broom, I thought I would support a local shop so went to a little hardware shop nearby and found one. I paid and was just leaving when the shopkeeper called me back “remember to nail a couple of nails through the head to the stick otherwise it will come off.”

Now I am perfectly capable of nailing a couple of nails through a broom head but am damned if I am going to do so on a brand new broom. He was most affronted that I asked for my money back, kept saying it was only a couple of nails, couldn’t see that it was a principle.

It took me a couple of weeks before I was emotionally strong enough to go to Wilco and buy a broom with its head firmly fixed.

I hope you don’t have the same experience @Ratonastick.

@HaveringWavering

A plain silver chain. I have a lovely pendant that was on such a chain until it was broken by a grabbing baby . Every few days I put on one of my many outfits that needs that necklace to set it off perfectly and wish I had got round to replacing it. It’s like Groundhog Day.

I think I am afraid of unfamiliarity with chain length options.

Try out a few lengths with string. Put the preferred string in your purse where it will smirk knowingly at you for the next six months every time you look in the purse and remember that you still haven’t bought the chain. Grin

Ah my people!

Lightbulbs - we moved house 4 years ago and the outside motion sensor light stopped working about 6 months later. All it needs is a new bulb. But no I keep using the torch on my phone rather than unscrewing the damn thing and taking it to b&q or looking on amazon for a replacement. I did however replace two of my bathroom bulbs after they blew last year but it took me two hours searching amazon for the best price vs quantity

Bath mat - I thought these were one of those impulse but actually a bit shit purchases. No? I will seriously consider one

Pyrex baking trays - I love Pyrex ( I have varying sizes of measuring jugs including one that is reserved solely for topping up the cats water bowl). Are they any good?

Underwear - I’m down to 3-4 comfy non elastic showing pairs of black knickers that don’t ride up my ass or slip under my apron. I own about 20 pairs. Do I clear out my drawer and buy more, ha do I heck. I just make sure all three pairs are in one of the daily-ish dark loads I do. And yet the second I notice DS needs underwear or socks I’m dashing off to Sainsbury’s (to be fair he has ASD and socks are a trigger for him)

@Mistlewoeandwhine

Baking beans (the ceramic ones) even though I bake a lot. New bras - yet have bought lots of new shoes. Why?
Have you tried dried mushy peas? Instead of baking beans. Works just as well and can be used over and over again.
Agadorsparticus · 24/08/2021 19:35

Oh everything on my Amazon save for later list and my eBay watch list.

A paper shredder for work. I'd use it weekly but I can't bring myself to buy one even though work would reimburse it. Seems like a lots of money to make rubbish.

On top of that, new towels, bath mat and could really replace our limescaled kettle.

Ourlady · 24/08/2021 19:40

@Etinox I bought a garlic press from Ikea not long ago. It was only a few quid and its the best press I have ever bought. I've since been back and bought more for other people as I'm so impressed

SirGawain · 24/08/2021 19:41

My mum had a large strainer spoon, many years old and with a wobbly handle. She used it for years and years and more than once scolded herself, but she never replaced it.

@Marmite17

Had a few rubbish non stick roasting trays. Reluctant to buy any more. Apart from the waste of money they spew out black bits on food. Not convinced re toxicity, probably fine but just want my food. Agree re landfill. Gone back to using my quite dirty looking 60 year old enamel roasting dishes. Heat will kill germs. Not convinced about the safety of eating Teflon.
You need ones made of Vitreous Enamel trays. Nothing sticks and they can be scrubbed to billyo and don't scratch. Asda ones are a bargain.
TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 24/08/2021 19:59

A wooden spatula! That was so old and 'hairy' but still worked and I would cut the 'hairy' bits off every so often.

Bought a set of three for less than a pound later... why did I wait so long!

Pyrex baking trays: I love these. I have two from Amazon, and I notice Ocado often discount them. I don't use them for anything I think needs metal (pastry, biscuits), but they're great for roast veg including potatoes and frozen stuff like burgers. Really easy to clean and dishwasher proof. My adult kids use them for reheating leftovers, oven chips, burgers etc after ruing my baking tins by not cleaning them properly so everything baked on because they're so easy to clean.
