Disgustingly Filthy

I spilt something on a canvas bag - decided to clean this and a pile of other soft rucksacks, laptop bags, etc.
Chucked them all in the bath with some pre-wash soaker, and they're now in the washing machine. The colour of the water in the bath was revolting - and I'd been carrying these bags around with me - YUK
They didn't look dory - but obviously carting round in city grime, etc.
I occasionally throw lightweight totes in with the washing - but how does everyone else keep this kind of stuff clean? - and how often?

Not enabled voting - definitely BU carting them round dirty Blush

I often wipe my handbag down with a wipe, just because I don't want it to look dirty and I'm trying to take care of it.

I've read that people even put their supermarket bags for life in the washing machine.

ThinWomansBrain · 22/08/2021 14:28

yes, I wipe leather bags over from time to time, and occasionally give a spray of furniture polish or water repellent spray that's meant for sneakers; it's the canvas/nylon/neoprene stuff that I've been neglecting, and a bit unsure of the best way to keep clean.

I hand wash the tote type bags and try and wipe down handbags etc. fairly often. Laptop bags and rucksacks depending on what they're made of go in the wash.
Were there colours on the bags? Not doubting they were dirty but some of the colour in the water could have been from dye.

Thewiseoneincognito · 22/08/2021 15:04

I often look at people carrying filthy bags and wonder if they’re aware how scruffy they look or if they even care, probably low self esteem.

Ever been at the supermarket and someone pulls out a purse that looks like they dug it up from landfill? Gross. The same with mobile phone covers.

Let’s not even start on shoes either, some people were dragged up.

1forAll74 · 22/08/2021 15:04

In the oldie days, people had canvas and stringy type bags, and kept them all their lives, without washing them.. They just shook all the bits of shopping messy bits out of them, and carried on like this for years.

blueshoes · 22/08/2021 15:06

Life's too short. Sorry.

That and incredibly dirty prams and pushchairs. Always wonder why people put their children in dirty prams with food spills and crumbs and dust in every crevice. It really is gross.

Life’s too short for good hygiene? I think you’ll find that life’s too short without good hygiene.

I was my supermarket bags from time to time and the only use they get these days is to load off the delivery crate at the front door and unload in the kitchen.

Oh great, a thread where all the good little women shame all the bad, dirty, nasty women for not washing their tote bags often enough.

Carboncheque · 22/08/2021 15:25

If you soak things and find the water gets really dark it could be dirty or it could be that it’s dye leaching out.

😂😁 It's mad how judgemental some people are on here.

Get a grip, who gives a shit if someone else's bag is grubby! The rest of us are too busy living to notice

Is MN offering a judgement prize today?

There’s nothing wrong with my self esteem, I just can’t be arsed to give head space to the condition of my shopping bags. I was actually brought up quite genteelly.

SoddingWeddings · 22/08/2021 15:30

ODFOD @Thewiseoneincognito

I've never ever washed my rucksack and I've had it for 9 years. Other than spot cleaning, it would never occur to me to bother.

Dirty shoes? I've got mud on my site boots that's probably 7yo. Not much point in cleaning muddy boots before going to the next muddy site as they live in a carrier bag in my car.

Who the fuck puts their shopping bags through a washing machine? All those plastic particles, so bad for the environment, the water course and yes even the sewers. Oh look - you can judge people for anything.....

I’ve got a string bag, came from some Fairtrade shop - I love it, it, very stretchy. I put it on an ordinary wash recently - it came up like new.
Oogachuckachopsy · 22/08/2021 15:32

The tautology in the title is bothering me. Also I don’t give a toss about my ‘disgustingly filthy’ bags.

ThinWomansBrain · 22/08/2021 15:34

thanks everyone
I'd like to think it was dye - range of colours, black, blue, pink, green, orange....
It was probably dirtHmm
they didn't look dirty - it's just the thought of them being against my clothes if they've been filthy - but I don't want to ruin them by overwashing.

DreamingOfTheSouthOfFrance · 22/08/2021 15:34

I washed my dog walking rucksack recently after a dog weed on it..... wouldn't normally bother

TowandaForever · 22/08/2021 15:36

I put backpacks, reusable folding bags, tote bags in the wash from time to time. I wash them with my cloths etc

Blossomtoes · 22/08/2021 15:36

Don’t, whatever you do, think of the state of your car seat - I reckon most drivers’ seats must be absolutely revolting.

mayblossominapril · 22/08/2021 15:40

If the bags were different colours and you put them into soak in fairly hot water it will be dye. A mix of all different dye colours always ends up sludge brown.

Silvercatowner · 22/08/2021 15:43

No-one ever died from a dirty bag. Well... I expect someone, somewhere must've, but in the whole history of humanity it's a risk I'm prepared to take. I'm on team 'life's too short'.

Topofthepopicles · 22/08/2021 15:43

Life’s too short for good hygiene? I think you’ll find that life’s too short without good hygiene.

Laughing at the idea that a grubby rucksack is going to shorten your life.

I mean if you have the time and inclination feel free to clean them but it’s hardly life or death is it..

UnGoogled · 22/08/2021 15:44

A too-clean environment is actually detrimental to our immune systems, and at any rate, I highly doubt your average dirty handbag or scruffy shoes are a bio hazard.
