AIBU that our holiday lodge isn't what we booked?

Nicer problems to have and all. I know we're lucky to be able to have a break at all.

Both DP and I are tall, both 6 foot plus, so I made sure we booked, and paid a lot of money for, a big enough bed. Otherwise we have to sleep all curled up together, or with our feet hanging off the end.

Aibu to be annoyed that we've been given standard double?

I'd complain. We have a superking bed and noticed the difference when we were decorating and slept in our spare room recently (King size).
If the beds in a hotel are standard doubles I often book a twin room for short stays as I value my sleep and don't get any in a double bed with DH who is tall with restless legs.

I have been known to measure the bed with an A4 notebook to prove a point.

TheGenealogist · 17/08/2021 11:09

It doesn't matter if you think 2 inches is neither here nor there.

The OP booked accommodation based on a particular facility - it happens to be the bed size but it could have been the presence of a tumble dryer, or a view, or a particular configuration of rooms.

She has not got what she thought she was booking and she should absolutely complain.
@Faithless12
I think Queen size is now called a small double. A size of bed no one needs, I have stayed in one and it’s really not for sharing.

I disagree. Both my DC have a small double instead of a single. The really appreciate the extra space. (I do agree that this size isn’t for sharing though).
Agree king size in uk has always been a 5 foot bed and queen was a small double. It’s become complicated as it’s not standard internationally. I have no idea what size I’m going to get when booking a queen bed hotel room!
People used to share a small double, not very popular now that people are taller and larger though! Double sofa beds are often small double size I think

NotWanting · 17/08/2021 11:20

I hate this ! Also tall here with restless legs. I need at least a king size bed.

Camphillgirl · 17/08/2021 11:29

Complain first thing then if rooms are fully booked and no availability if somebody is leaving a room with King Size you may be first in line. Should get refund on incorrectly allocated room especially if prebooked.

teddyclown · 17/08/2021 11:31

@Etulosba

Super king is six feet eight inches long. We have one.
Yes, we have one too and I can vouch for that :-)
DarlingFell · 17/08/2021 11:34

DH and I are averagely sized but we always insist on at least a king-size bed wherever we stay, I cannot stand not having space and can't understand how couples manage to sleep well in a double bed!

EL8888 · 17/08/2021 11:40

YANBU as you haven’t got what you paid for. We aren’t short people and a double would be too small for us (especially if we paid for a king!)

tcjotm · 17/08/2021 11:44

@reprehensibleme

We have an Australian queen size bed 153 x 203 cm which is the same as a UK king - I think pp is correct and the old queen size was ditched in the UK and is now referred to as king size.

Australian king size is 183 x 203 which is classed as super king in UK.

Thanks, good to know, I was getting very confused by posts saying a queen was smaller than a double. Usually Australia and the UK are similar for things like this.

I’d love a king bed the size I’ve slept in hotels in California. Huuuuge. My Australian king/UK super king is a disappointment in comparison and it’s just me and 2 cats. But I’ve never seen them here.

Coogee · 17/08/2021 11:45

Find this interesting - my husband is 6'1 and it's never occurred to me to specifically book a king size. Maybe he sleeps really curled up

My husband got used to sleeping with his feet sticking out of the end of beds since he was a teenager. Maybe he does that.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 17/08/2021 11:46

No, the old queen size was a small double. It was never a king size. I’ve been buying king sizes for 35 years

Floralnomad · 17/08/2021 11:51

How did it go at reception @MangoBiscuit

LucyfurMorningstar · 17/08/2021 11:53

Standard UK Matress Sizes
NAME IMPERIAL SIZE METRIC SIZE
Small Single 2’6″ x 6’3″ 75 x 190 cm
Single 3′ x 6’3″ 90 x 190 cm
Small Double 4′ x 6’3″ 120 x 190 cm
Double 4’6″ x 6’3″ 135 x 190 cm
King 5′ x 6’6″ 150 x 200 cm
Super King 6′ x 6′6” 180 x 200 cm

diddl · 17/08/2021 12:13

I think I read that a double gives each person the same width of mattress as a cot.

We have a superking-it's only a single mattress each!

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 17/08/2021 12:14

You are meant to be able to lie down with arms behind your head and elbows not touching to determine the correct size of mattress needed. If they touch it’s too small.

Obviously don’t lie on the edge of the bed.

Exactly what my 6'4" DH does.

He says he couldn't care less whether the bed is king or double, as long as there's no foot board - that's where there can be a big problem because there's no way to avoid that being in the way.

My friend's DH - also 6'4" - is exactly the same. When we all go away together to a holiday let, our DHs always scour the listing photos to see whether the beds have food boards! Grin

Plumtree391 · 17/08/2021 12:23

Kingsize surely refers to the width, not the length. My husband was 6'3" but he didn't sleep flat so size of bed never bothered him, same here (though I am only 5'6"). Most people don't stretch out full length, they tend to curl up a bit.

A king size bed is 6 foot 6 inches long and 5 foot wide ( I do realise there are people over 6'6).

If you've measured and haven't been given a king sized, then you have grounds for complaint, otherwise not.

Grinch48 · 17/08/2021 12:26

We have a huge super king water bed 😂 best thing we ever bought
DH is 6ft 3 and his feet definitely don’t hang over the bed

MyDcAreMarvel · 17/08/2021 12:40

We have a Queen, it’s massive much bigger than a king. Certainly not smaller than a double.

Walkingalot · 17/08/2021 12:42

Hope OP is too busy moving accommodation to post an update yet!

Sexnotgender · 17/08/2021 12:50

Finally found a benefit to being a shortarse!

memberofthewedding · 17/08/2021 12:53

Hope you paid with a credit card! Be sure to mention this if you dont get any satisfaction.

VanCleefArpels · 17/08/2021 12:57

As beds of whatever width are the same length I don’t understand why a king sized bed would better accommodate a tall person UNLESS you sleep on it sideways?? Having said that a double bed for two people ought to be a breach of human rights. Just wrong.

Blossomtoes · 17/08/2021 12:59

can't understand how couples manage to sleep well in a double bed!

We manage if we have to although our bed is a king. My parents spent 64 years happily sleeping in a double.

Google it. They aren't the same length. They are 3 inches longer for kingsize and super king than the length of a standard double.
