AIBU that our holiday lodge isn't what we booked?

Nicer problems to have and all. I know we're lucky to be able to have a break at all.

Both DP and I are tall, both 6 foot plus, so I made sure we booked, and paid a lot of money for, a big enough bed. Otherwise we have to sleep all curled up together, or with our feet hanging off the end.

Aibu to be annoyed that we've been given standard double?

Have a think about what you will accept. Chances are it's all full and they will say sorry nothing we can do and offer you £100 or something. For me, sleep is more important. Be ready to say that it's not proportionate because you would not book a place with a double. You can do this and be perfectly reasonable. If you are not getting anywhere, go higher. Remember it's generally not the fault of the person you are speaking to, but it's their job to fix it.

Wimowehwimowehwimowehwimoweh · 17/08/2021 09:51

Well, I had no clue that bed size altered the bed length. I assumed they were all standard length & just the width changed!
Not super tall but I can’t get a good sleep with DH in a double, the extra width alone makes all the difference so, with you both being tall, YANBU to ask to move.

Coogee · 17/08/2021 09:52

My husband is tall. We try and make sure that we never stay in places where there is an end on the bed. He sleeps with his feet sticking out of the end of our super king at home.

Theimpossiblegirl · 17/08/2021 09:55

I had no idea the bed length varied but that's because I'm short.
Hope you get this resolved, op.
If they're full you could end up choosing between staying in a smaller bed and cancelling though, they wouldn't be able to move others.
Fingers crossed for you.

Frazzled2207 · 17/08/2021 09:57

I would go in polite rather than all guns ablazing
Unfortunately the likely scenario in
Mid august is that they are full and nothing can be done except compensating you
Doubt that they have spare king size beds lying around

I thought the same.

It does make sense though as we've just been to a holiday cottage with a 5 ft bed and it waas an almost identical style to the one we have at home. At home ours is a standard 4 ft 6 inches. About half way through the week I noticed that my feet didnt touch the end of the bed if I slept low in the bed. This thread explains it all.

MrsMaizel · 17/08/2021 10:04

We are talking 2 inches difference in length 🤔

BakedBeeeen · 17/08/2021 10:04

@Lalliella

You think that you can detect 10 cm difference in this way because that is all we are talking about ?

Of course she can. She knows whether she’s 6 foot tall or 6 foot 4. 4 inches is a big difference.

I can - it's the difference between my feet hanging off the end or not. It is the most important thing to me about holiday accommodation. I'm with you OP!
TheSloaneRanger · 17/08/2021 10:04

I'd say something , it's not what you booked
I need my sleep too

PicturesOfLily · 17/08/2021 10:07

YANBU. I hope they manage to sort something for you. I’m 5’11 and DH is over 6’. We need at least a king size bed or we sleep terribly. In the past, DH has slept on the sofa rather than share a double (if we’ve been with friends etc and no choice).

Cannothandletheheat · 17/08/2021 10:07

Quite a few years ago we stayed at a travelodge and their plumbing system was dodgy so every time someone in the corridor above used the taps or toilet we would get a clanking noise as the pipe was next to our room. They couldn’t get a plumber out til the morning. It got so bad we couldn’t sleep. After complaining, they said there were no more rooms. After we took it further, they offered to pay for us to have a room at a different local hotel. This was a 4 star hotel on a golf course!!! It meant a drive down country lanes in the middle of the night but it was worth it. We didn’t pay the difference in price either. So we got our £50 travelodge room upgraded to a £150 a night room!! For free.

The reason I’m saying this is, if they cannot get you a king size bed, if you complain enough you may get a room at a different hotel.

Coogee · 17/08/2021 10:08

We are talking 2 inches difference in length 🤔

If you are six foot four long in a bed that is only six foot three long, an extra two inches means you can actually lie out straight. It makes a big difference.

Bigassbeebuzzbuzz · 17/08/2021 10:08

Definitely complain. Bewildered why places like hotels bother with double beds. They are not made for 2 people to share.

LemonJuiceFromConcentrate · 17/08/2021 10:08

MrsMaizel, you seem pretty invested in minimising the issue on this thread — what’s that all about? 🤔

Coogee · 17/08/2021 10:10

We can manage perfectly well in a double as long as there is no footboard. Otherwise, my husband has to contort himself and takes up more width.

Cannothandletheheat · 17/08/2021 10:11

Just noticed your title and you’re in a holiday lodge. Surely they will have spare mattresses if you’re on a holiday park/site.

Coogee · 17/08/2021 10:11

what’s that all about? 🤔

She probably owns the holiday lodge in question.

rookiemere · 17/08/2021 10:14

Definitely complain- after struggling to sleep on a saggy standard double mattress on a recent holiday, we ended up moving to the twin room and DS got upgraded to the double.
It will now be something I look for when booking and will only stay if can get Kingsize or twin beds.

RubyGoat · 17/08/2021 10:14

YANBU. My DH is 6'4" & even with his head touching the headboard, his feet are over the end of our standard double at home. We have a small bedroom (can only afford a small house). We always get somewhere with a dishwasher & a kingsize bed as we have neither at home, it's a holiday treat!

Definitely request that you get what you booked ASAP.

rc22 · 17/08/2021 10:14

DH and I are only 5ft8 and 5ft6 respectively and only have room for a standard double bed at home. When we go on holiday, we always look to book somewhere with a king size bed as a treat as they are much more comfortable even for those of us of very average/shortish height!!

If it's what you booked, it's what you should get so definitely ask to be moved.

Blossomtoes · 17/08/2021 10:15

@Etulosba

I’m old and a king size bed has been 5 feet wide by six feet six inches long as long as I can remember.
Same. I thought queen size was an American thing.
ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 17/08/2021 10:18

I always thought a queen was a small double.

So, single, Queen, double, King, Superking.

I’m 5ft 9. Dh is 6ft 4. Only a superking will do.

Same - I bought a super king size bed over 20 years ago, and it was 6ft wide (not sure about the length!).

I thought it had always been single 3ft, double 4ft6", kingsize 5ft, super kingsize 6ft. At least as long as I can remember. And did we ever have queensize in the UK? It's different when booking accommodation in the US

Etulosba · 17/08/2021 10:22

Super king is six feet eight inches long. We have one.

I think Queen size is now called a small double. A size of bed no one needs, I have stayed in one and it’s really not for sharing.
