To think Joe Biden is an even worse president than Trump?

I realise Trump was appalling in many ways so this isn't a pro-Trump post really, and I know he was the one who put things in motion for the withdrawal from Afghanistan. But to pull out in such a sudden and shambolic way will without doubt be the direct cause of many deaths and other atrocities in Afghanistan, including the deaths of those who helped the US and other forces. I think it's utterly unforgivable. Can't think of anything Trump did with quite such immediate and devastating consequences. AIBU?

The soviets fought against the Mujahideen ( who were back by the US and UK), in support for the People's Democratic Party. The US had one fear and that was Communism and the to-ing and growing with the soviets in their drawn out chess game.

The soviets withdrew from Afghanistan after their collapse and all hell broke lose internally with factions of the extremist groups

MarshaBradyo · 17/08/2021 16:10

Picked by clearing up mess what do you mean - what would have to happen for US to leave?

Afaik the reason to be there was to safeguard against extremism in US and allies. And that is an indefinite position to take. It is concerning for allies etc but at same time US needs public support for it.

MarshaBradyo · 17/08/2021 16:13

Piddock rather..

Lweji · 17/08/2021 16:17

Yes, it was perpetrated by the US, all to just oppose the Soviets.

If you think this was all created by the US.

@Pokhora

The withdrawal was put in place by Trump. He negotiated theconditional peace deal in 2020that agreed the withdrawal of US and NATO forces. Biden should have u-turned on this but tricky when the wheels were already in motion and the withdrawal had the backing of the majority of the American public.
This.

The U.K. govt we're trying to score. Trade deal with Trump before the US elections. So they said nothing that might rock the boat about anything.

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 17/08/2021 16:31

Were trying. Bloody autocorrect

piddocktrumperiness · 17/08/2021 16:59

@MarshaBradyo

I mean, the US have maintained a presence in the Korean Peninsula since 1953

piddocktrumperiness · 17/08/2021 17:00

By US, I mean US troops- since 1953

This is intergenerational

By clearing up mess do you mean staying indefinitely? So doing what they were with no other objective? Also any risk of open conflict if agreement overturned

Out of interest are there US casualties from US presence in Korean Peninsula?

Steakandcheeseplease · 17/08/2021 17:39

@MarshaBradyo Do you honestly think that people join the army not knowing that they may encounter open conflict? The very definition of Army means - an organized military force equipped for fighting on land. They spend months and months even years training for open conflict. Thats what they get paid to do. Repeatedly saying they wanted to avoid open conflict or that they were right to avoid open conflict is bizarre. Open conflict is the very essence of what an Army does.

And YES they should have stayed indefinitely to clear up the bloody mess they made.

What the fuck is 'open conflict'?

MarshaBradyo · 17/08/2021 17:43

The point is Steak is that the situation may have changed and escalated had Biden reversed. It wouldn’t have been the reduced troops, but more more in number and more deaths.

People sound fine with what was happening atm but if it changed and escalated - are you ok with that?

And even if you are the US didn’t support staying already so do their views count when it comes to worsening the situation?

Steakandcheeseplease · 17/08/2021 17:44

@Thatsjustwhatithink I don't know ask @MarshaBradyo they keep banging on about it...

MarshaBradyo · 17/08/2021 17:46

You are so aggressive Steak it’s comical.

It’s the reason Biden said they’re not staying. I assume more fighting.

Don’t blame me if you didn’t listen but just ‘bang on’ about stuff without listening to anything at all.

Yes I am ok with that. I don't see how the situation could be any worse that what it is now.

How do you feel about the refugees coming to the U.K?

Thatsjustwhatithink · 17/08/2021 17:47

@Steakandcheeseplease

I asked because it's what 12 years old playing "assassin's creed" speak of...not actual soldiers.

Is 'banging on about it" now considered aggressive, bloody hell you should see what's going on in Afghanistan...
MarshaBradyo · 17/08/2021 17:48

Actually Biden used the term 🤷‍♀️

It wasn't me that coined the phrase - read the thread .. Grin

Thatsjustwhatithink · 17/08/2021 17:49

@Steakandcheeseplease

@MarshaBradyo is asking you proper questions but be sure you know nothing about Afghanistan or warfare or being a soldier...you resort to insults.

caringcarer · 17/08/2021 17:50

Biden is rubbish. His actions will devistate so many lives of females. He just does not care. I predict there will be a backlash with Taliban setting bombs and traps for Westerners. Short sighted idiot.

What do you know?

Thatsjustwhatithink · 17/08/2021 18:03

Unlike the majority of this people on this thread, I've spent actual time in Afghanistan and talked to women in Helmand. One of the things they would say to us? "Go home". Why was this- because IEDs were only planted to blow up soldiers.

But do you who also stood on hidden IEDs? Children. And women. And old men. And young men. The locals. Their livestock.

So you know what they wanted us to go because we bought the bombs and the fighting to their village. If we made the afghans talk to us, the Taliban would check up on them later. They just want the western soldiers to fuck off so they'd be no more bombs and fighting.

Did they like the Afghan army? No, they hated them. The afghans would never put the same ethnic group protecting their own tribes because of corruption, so placed a different ethnic group in the area...who didn't give a fuck. This was inbetween the Afghan army raping the younger soldiers.

So trust me, outside of Kabul no one wants the US or UK or Danish or Norwegians etc in their country.
