To think Joe Biden is an even worse president than Trump?

I realise Trump was appalling in many ways so this isn't a pro-Trump post really, and I know he was the one who put things in motion for the withdrawal from Afghanistan. But to pull out in such a sudden and shambolic way will without doubt be the direct cause of many deaths and other atrocities in Afghanistan, including the deaths of those who helped the US and other forces. I think it's utterly unforgivable. Can't think of anything Trump did with quite such immediate and devastating consequences. AIBU?

I was incredulous when watching the election unfold on Twitter. The silly echo chamber was full of Brits whooping and 'celebrating' over the result of an election they didn't vote in, that didn't directly affect them, and that the 'Not-Trump' vote had been endorsed (now that part I get) but without any modicum of insight into the kind of president they'd get in his place.

Biden was obviously no friend to Britain from the outset. As for women? His first task was to chuck them under the bus by opening up their protected spaces to all and sundry. And as for Afghanistan and the fate of women under the Taliban, you only have to look to the fate of Meena Kamal, assassinated for courageously founding the Revolutionary Association of the Women of Afghanistan. Note the supporters chanting that their fate is now 'their problem': no, we don't get that kind of a free pass. The West has made it our problem now for occupying the nation for as good as two decades. We don't, or shouldn't, do that and expect just to walk away with no claims on us.

Trump groped women. He'd have denied them their own autonomy, rights over their bodies, and say in whether or not they progressed with a pregnancy. When Biden took office it was hard to imagine any president could surpass that level of misogyny, or disaster for women's basic human rights.

Congratulations to Biden. He's succeeded admirably.

I really do not understand this thread! The fact there are people who believe Trump was a better President than Biden (even though we have a good measure of Trump) and Biden hasn't really begun yet, is telling. No wonder we have Boris Johnson and his corrupt Conservative party in power! The democratic world has gone mad!

As for Afghanistan- unless the western world are to take complete control of much of the Middle East then there is little hope of them establishing civilised societies in the foreseeable future. It's sad that an area that is hailed as being where the dawn of civilisation began is currently lost to such barbaric and primitive ways of thinking.

I don't think that any nation is above the threat of extremism and war though. The rise of the far right and the inability of the people of America and the UK to elect leaders with integrity is worrying. Where will we be ourselves in a few hundred years if this continues ?

Lweji · 16/08/2021 17:34

"Which was actually prepared and demanded by Trump?"

"How do you suggest it should have been done given the timeline Trump agreed, and demanded from Biden too?"

No, it was an Obama election promise that he followed through on by starting the withdrawal in 2012. The withdrawal has taken a decade. It’s not been badly planned or hurried. It was a lost war.

But the timing as of this year was on Trump. And earlier this year he demanded it of Biden, too.

This thread is about comparing the two. So, let's put the responsibility where it lies.

Lweji · 16/08/2021 17:38

At least Trump could answer questions on the spot.

As someone who followed Trump closely for 4 years (check the Trump threads) I can tell you that Trump did anything except answer the questions posed to him.
Translators had extreme difficulty making any sense of what he said. Grin

I'm surprised you are not claiming that Obama had dementia too, considering his famous lengthy pauses when speaking.

Jorrris · 16/08/2021 17:38

My relatives in the US can’t understand how anyone voted for Trump.

Well clearly there's a difference on opinion with this isn't there ☺️

Whiskyinajar · 16/08/2021 17:43

Trump signed an agreement to withdraw next May. All they've done is hold the Taliban back for 20 years.

And withdrawing now has just brought forward the Taliban surging forward.

So Trump throwing insults should stop....this was always going to happen.

Of course the other alternative is sending 100.000 + service personnel out there but I'm guessing just people don't want that either.

FreekStar2 · 16/08/2021 17:44

The fact the Taliban has such numbers and has been able to advance with such speed and ease across the country just shows that US military presence hasn't done anything suppress the movement and whenever the withdrawal happened the end result would be the same. They were just biding their time.

thelastgoldeneagle · 16/08/2021 17:44

@newyorker74 - this is a good article on how the Taliban are funded: www.bbc.com/news/world-46554097

@Lweji I'm surprised you are not claiming that Obama had dementia too, considering his famous lengthy pauses when speaking.

There’s a difference between pausing for dramatic effect and pausing because you’ve lost track of your train of thought. Obama was hands down far superior at giving speeches. Biden just looks and sounds confused.

You need to learn about reading body language. You also need to watch recent videos of Biden talking. I don’t understand your fan girling over Biden.

gardeninggirl68 · 16/08/2021 17:46

quite a few deaths today in the evacuation chaos....its now been halted

temporarily I assume

Voicefancier · 16/08/2021 17:46

@Lweji
As most Presidents do in relation to previously signed international treaties.

The Taliban are already breaking that treaty with human rights abuses that are happening already. Biden could have stopped or slowed down the withdrawal as soon as that started to happen. Surely the Americans anticipated this would happen and had a plan in place? Instead there's a vacuum of leadership. I don't understand why you persist in blaming Trump but giving Biden a pass.

Coyoacan · 16/08/2021 17:49

Trump was utterly batshit and dangerous to both his own citizens and people outside the US

Watching Trump give a speech was totally surreal, he was such a headcase and I do not follow US politics enough to know what he did internally that was so bad, but internationally he was the least toxic president in a long time.

mustlovegin · 16/08/2021 17:49

Biden is dangerous

Being weak and woke makes one an easy target and endangers those around you

Lweji · 16/08/2021 17:52

Agree.

More than Obama, but very far from dementia.

I don't need to anything. And I'm not certainly not fan anything.
But your assessment of Biden is very unfair of him, particularly in comparison to Trump. He certainly spoke many words, but he meant very little by them.
I'd rather take a slower older man who takes his time to mean what he says, and makes some sense.

But, by all means, watch this video, for example, and tell me where are the signs.

I advise starting at 17:40. I'll be happy to be enlightened.
MariposaLilly · 16/08/2021 17:53

Trump was one of the best President we've ever had. (I'm in US). Trump was for peace and bringing jobs back to America - which he did.

We knew Biden was suffering from cognitive impairment for at least a year.

RIGHT NOW WE DON'T KNOW WHO IS RUNNING THE COUNTRY - it is not Biden, he's too out of it mentally.

The peace loving world should be very, very scared.

The ignorant & easily led were so offended by Trump's 'mean' Tweets that to them it was well worth installing an old demented old man as leader of the free world just to stop being offended by Tweets. I loved that Trump was defending himself and wasn't putting up with their ignorant BS.

Biden wasn't not elected. The election was stolen.

God help us all!

Lweji · 16/08/2021 17:53

Biden could have stopped or slowed down the withdrawal as soon as that started to happen.

It took days. How would you have acted? Please, in detail, as you're so knowledgeable.

BrozTito · 16/08/2021 17:55

Alexander the G conquered afghanistan, then a facinating greco buddhist culture emerged there.

paepoyrol · 16/08/2021 17:56

Biden could have stopped or slowed down the withdrawal as soon as that started to happen.

How though? They clearly didn't expect it to fall so quickly so how would they have stopped it?

Yes.

Parker231 · 16/08/2021 18:01

@MariposaLilly - can I ask which state you live in?

HumousWhereTheHeartIs · 16/08/2021 18:04

Trump started the withdrawal of troops after negotiating directly with the Taliban and losing much of the US's standing. The whole thing is a mess and they are all to blame

BrozTito · 16/08/2021 18:06

Fucking lol. Trump wanted troops out in may, so people knew it was coming and biden delayed. Trump's fantastic deal also released 5000 al qaeda etc from gaol, for seemingly nothing in return. I wonder where those released prisoners are now........
