I have visited Chernobyl and it was very safe - I definitely wouldn't have had the balls to go to Afghanistan though!
Yes, this struck me too and made me think that this person is likely incredibly naïve about international travel; Chernobyl now vs Kabul over the last few weeks (or months, or even years) is a completely inappropriate comparison.
Yes, parts of eastern Ukraine can still be dangerous, but for Chernobyl you fly into Kiev (a modern city which is very safe by European standards, and where most people in the tourist industry speak excellent English) and arrange to be taken by van or minibus into the exclusion zone, most often in a luxury van with a dozen other tourists and a driver and guide. Within the zone, you're required to have a government-approved guide; even if you stay longer than the typical day trip, you're never alone and never have to rely on your own wits or judgment.
It's an interesting and enlightening trip - if someone wants to go please do, and consider making time to see Kiev as well - but compared to Kabul in August 2021, it's like a school field trip.
