I was in my early 20's when 9/11 happened, the last 20 years has been overshadowed by endless wars without clearly defined objectives (original point of going into Afghanistan was to "get" Al Qaeda, there was then massive mission creep)

AIBU to think the last 20 years in Afghanistan was a total waste of time?

@Panickingpavlova

Blue Wanda I'm not seeing many women and children in the crowds leaving, in the scenes from the airport nor on the roads out.

Where are the women and children.
Where are they.

I've noticed this too Panicking

Looking at this video, I don't see any women trying to leave the country? Where are they?

Women and children are not being prioritised, despite the threat being greatest for them

Sadly I wouldn't expect them to be, in a society where a lot of the men see them as little more than chattels

It's natural and right that more developed nations insist the weakest should be protected, but too many in Afghanistan don't feel that way and we're always told it's not for the west to impose our values on others. FWIW I agree with this, but one of the consequences is having to watch scenes we'd rather not, carried out by people who won't change because they simply don't want to

mrshoho · 16/08/2021 10:11

Are you a male @OhWhyNot?

PopsicleHustler · 16/08/2021 10:12

@fromeden

You say then that means none.

Women do have rights in islam. They have so many rights in islam that go back over a thousand years .....

Taliban have nothing to do with islam. They actually go against the quran, same as ISIS.

jasjas1973 · 16/08/2021 10:13

@Proudboomer

Watch the videos on the bbc website of Kabul airport. Majority is young men trying to fight their way onto air craft. Where are their wives, sisters, daughters, mothers?

Just like the Afghan army they don’t give a shit about the women of Afghanistan. Women’s lives are cheap and easy replaceable.

What would happen to women if they tried to get from their homes in Kabul to the Airport and were caught by the Taliban?

I suspect they are at home, very afraid.

also, there are 10s of 000s of afghan men who worked for the Allied forces over the last 20 years, they are the ones we are seeing flee to the airport.

Once again, the Afghan army have lost 66,000 soldiers fighting the Taliban.

So do other countries that were not invaded. The fact remains. If you go in you go in with intentions and plans to support for as long as it takes. If not then dont. This was never more than a half arsed attempt to enable some US politicians to score some points. Well they’ve lost them now, and then some.

No I am not male

I am aware it’s a very misogynistic society but many are looking purely from a western viewpoint

We don’t live in fear, we have had freedom, we have choices, if I were living there thankfully I’m not I would be hiding my sons too life is miserable for everyone

Alondra · 16/08/2021 10:22

There is a reason why many of us thought invading Afghanistan was a terrible idea. History to start with.

The old Soviet Union tried for 20 years to get control and had to leave without winning a war that is unwinnable considering their geography (mostly inaccessible mountains) and with a Pakistan that supports the Taliban with arms and logistics, arms and logistics supplied by the West even when the West was fighting the Taliban.

Whoever thought this would have a different outcome have no idea of political history in the middle east. But hey, political propaganda sells well in our countries with a media completely sold to big multinational/nationalistic Western interests.

Afghanistan is a

I have every idea of how men treat women on a daily basis here on our streets. I have a very good idea of what will happen to women there.

PickUpAPepper · 16/08/2021 10:25

I will fight them here if the attitudes to women continue to degrade. I have had to fight men off, or run, here before. Do you really think it’s so different? It’s a matter of degree, and things are getting worse. What do you expect those of us brought up under male domination to think?

PickUpAPepper · 16/08/2021 10:26

To stop the derail I will reiterate: if you go in, you stay for as long as it takes.

acolderwar · 16/08/2021 10:27
@LadyAria I am also an afghan. Have you spoke to anyone back home because I do everyday and it's not a coincidence that everyone I have spoke to, is in no way concerned.

My auntie is a very educated woman as my cousins, they have all gone to work today in their offices.

Lots of business owners are happy, as my nephews shop was constantly getting ransacked and police wouldn't do anything because the thieves were lining their pockets.

I see social media from the west, but everything from the east is so telling.

My grandma here in London is crying but my auntie in Kabul tells her everything is fine.
Shame on you for spreading this propaganda about women from your own country.

Yes the Operation was called Enduring Freedom - the Afghans didn't read the small print.

However you look at it, its a huge betrayal of all the soldiers killed and maimed there and of the afghans themselves, we may as well of never invaded.

paepoyrol · 16/08/2021 10:30

Even if the voting public in America disagree?

Trumps policy was to leave, the USA voting public rejected him, Biden had a choice.
paepoyrol · 16/08/2021 10:33

But my question was if the voting public didn't want it should the US stay there "for as long as it takes"?
