AIBU to think DD isn't fully dressed in leggings & a t-shirt?

When I ask DD (nearly 9) to get dressed she often comes down in just leggings and a t-shirt, tucked in.

She looks undressed to me.

A t-shirt and leggings are fine for sport, or bed, or for toddlers IMO. Or a long tshirt over leggings is fine too.

But she likes to wear her T-shirt tucked in (which looks lumpy!) She just looks like she forgot to finish getting dressed like that, AIBU?

And AIBU to ask her to put another layer over the leggings? e.g. a skirt or pinafore dress or shorts?

I know it's only a small thing in the scheme of things and I'm inclined to let her get her way if we're just going to the park for a play or something. But I'm curious how others see it?

@KurtWilde - same here. I have leggings in every colour and match them with a T-shirt. We obviously shouldn’t be leaving the house ever again as we are a poor role model for our DD’s!

MumDadBingoBLUEY · 15/08/2021 07:56

DS4 lives in leggings and tshirts. He finds them a lot more comfortable than joggers/trousers/etc. He's basically a stick, too, so they stay up better than most things.

They don't show off anything, or make it obvious he's a boy... It's just another type of trouser, that's practical and comfortable to wear.

Lumpwoody · 15/08/2021 07:58

I’m planning to do my groceries in leggings and a T-shirt later.

Am I basically going out in my underwear?

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 15/08/2021 07:59

As long as they are fairly thick leggings and suitable for the weather, I am baffled by this.

I regularly go out in leggings and a t shirt and I'm....36.

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 15/08/2021 08:00

Historically men have often worn leggings and they wear them more and more now.

I've been glad lately that the trend is for day time clothing to be more focussed on comfort and practicality and less focussed on appearance.

Bluntness100 · 15/08/2021 08:02

Honestly sometimes you come on this site and it’s like you’ve opened up a parallel universe. Leggings are underwear? Who is wearing leggings as underwear? Uncivilised to see a nine year old in them? Wtf? 😂

JazzerMcCreary · 15/08/2021 08:04

Not an outfit I’d choose to wear in the summer because I need to be able to let my legs breathe a bit. But definitely an entire outfit.

Clearly we're just doing life all wrong 😂

@Gemma2019

There was a drama on the other day called I am Victoria where the mum insisted her daughters couldn't leave the house in leggings and a t-shirt but had to get properly dressed.

I'm not a lover of tops tucked into leggings but I definitely wouldn't be dying on that hill.

That programme came to my mind too.
Pottedpalm · 15/08/2021 08:08

It’s fine on children and slim adults who can carry that look, but not tight leggings on larger women unless worn with a longer top.

godmum56 · 15/08/2021 08:08

@liveforsummer

Don't you care about the state of the streets and people's sloppy dressing? If men dressed the way loads of women do they'd be arrested under the obscenity laws.

Grin

oh I know.......lets all wear burqas
saraclara · 15/08/2021 08:10

Of course she's dressed. But yes, a tucked in tee shirt looks weird with leggings. I'd work on that if anything (only for her sake because her friends will also think it odd)

ditto aged 68. My arse is the size of a small country so I do wear a bum covering top but its nobody's business but mine if I choose not to. Where do women get off telling other women what they should and should not wear? If a bloke did it, the "usual suspects" would be up in arms....btw for people like me, Love Leggings have them for all sizes and all sizes and heights, both leggings and jeggings.
Justme10 · 15/08/2021 08:13

@DumbestBlonde

Actually I don't think you are being unreasonable...... It does depend a bit on the leggings? Personally, i hink it looks so much nicer - and was probably the original intention of leggings - if the top they wear covers their bum, longer T-shirt, sweatshirt, hoodie - or tunic-type or a dress sometimes, depending on the style.

Aside: Please, no-one get me started on cycling shorts as a "trend"; I saw an adult woman coming out of Tesco today in a pair (obviously NOTfor cycling), with a denim shirt that was just hip length - and obviously no underwear - because it looked like she was IN her undies - as the shorts were white.

I agree with this completely!

The amount of woman that wear cycling shorts in pubs and nightclubs is just so weird to me. Confused

Lumpwoody · 15/08/2021 08:15

I’m “larger”. I still wear leggings. 🙄 if I’m going out I wear a tunic top with them but in the house it’s anything. Why would anyone care?

Lockheart · 15/08/2021 08:17

I'm going to side with the OP here.

Leggings and a t shirt are great for the gym or hanging around the house, but I don't consider them as proper clothes. I own loads of leggings but I wouldn't wear them outside the house unless I was exercising.

And for those saying what else could she wear - trousers, shirts, skirts, or dresses would be the obvious answer!

I grew up in the 90s and 00s and I remember it was always one of the above, we never wore leggings.

55378OO8 · 15/08/2021 08:18

My 8 year old always wears t-shirt and leggings, usually brightly coloured prints. I like it because it's comfortable and practical. Much better than a few years ago when she insisted on wearing frilly dresses the whole time.

My son also lives in tshirts and leggings, he finds proper trousers uncomfortable.

Nanny0gg · 15/08/2021 08:19

OP, were you bored?

Magicstars · 15/08/2021 08:21

My nine year old lives in her T-shirt & leggings. She looks fine but most importantly is comfy & able to run, jump, climb, play without restrictions.

Parker231 · 15/08/2021 08:21

Reading this thread it seems we have gone back to the 1950’s.

Lumpwoody · 15/08/2021 08:21

I never exercise and I wear leggings out of the house. Oops. Another social faux pas for me not to give a fuck about.

TurquoiseDress · 15/08/2021 08:22

Sounds like she is dressed already?

Thebookswereherfriends · 15/08/2021 08:22

This is what my dd likes to wear, not tucked in though, it’s what she finds comfortable. Why should it bother you? Leave her be.

Because they're a twat.
Rosehip10 · 15/08/2021 08:24

Many comments on this thread are ridiculous and like going back 150 years to Victoria times. Having to wear a top that covers the bum to protect the "modesty" of girls/women ffs Angry
