AIBU to think DD isn't fully dressed in leggings & a t-shirt?

When I ask DD (nearly 9) to get dressed she often comes down in just leggings and a t-shirt, tucked in.

She looks undressed to me.

A t-shirt and leggings are fine for sport, or bed, or for toddlers IMO. Or a long tshirt over leggings is fine too.

But she likes to wear her T-shirt tucked in (which looks lumpy!) She just looks like she forgot to finish getting dressed like that, AIBU?

And AIBU to ask her to put another layer over the leggings? e.g. a skirt or pinafore dress or shorts?

I know it's only a small thing in the scheme of things and I'm inclined to let her get her way if we're just going to the park for a play or something. But I'm curious how others see it?

In the current fashion of cropped t shirts and tucked in tops, which grown adults are wearing with cycle shorts. I'm afraid you're fighting a losing battle saying bums need to be covered.
Also 'revealing' 'nook and cranny' ??? I'm sure OP isn't buying her dd THAT sort of legging 😆. Camel toe? Oh come on now!

Surely at 9 what is important is that's she's comfy to play? I'm sure she's not wearing it to school where there is a requirement to be a bit smarter (although my dd does wear leggings with her school polo)

As for girls t shirts being too tight - dd has lots of regular fit t shirts which she refuses to wear as she finds her sisters tight ribbed tees more comfy so steals them whenever she can. Older dd has these as she has some sensory issue with clothes and can't stand the flapping sleeves of a normal tee or how it feels when the sleeve is bunched under a jumper so it's not to say baggier boys t shirts are more comfy for everyone.

Don't you care about the state of the streets and people's sloppy dressing? If men dressed the way loads of women do they'd be arrested under the obscenity laws.

[quote MessOfEyelinerAndSpraypaint]@QueenBee52 I'm talking about adults. And then saying it's a good idea to get an 8 year old used to the idea that leggings are underwear.
My daughter wore leggings from an early age, of course, they are comfortable for little ones scurfing outdoors all day; but 8 is time to start layering. Especially if she's tucking her tee in.

Vile and pathetic.

Akwardly sitting here in t-shirt and leggings......

OutOfTrousers · 15/08/2021 06:08

Depends on the leggings and the occasion. If we were going to a restaurant, I’d ask her to wear a dress rather than a t-shirt. She won’t wear a dress without leggings because she does’t want people to see her pants (she’s often hanging upside down on a climbing frame or up a tree…)
If she’s going to school, I’d expect her to wear one of her longer t-shirts or a tunic over them. To the beach or around the house or for sport it’s fine.

Can’t you ask her to untuck her T-shirt? Shorts over leggings or tights is ridiculous, especially in this heat.

eurochick · 15/08/2021 06:19

I think it's a shit look on adults, but it is still fully dressed. On small children it's a practical and comfortable outfit.

Bexily · 15/08/2021 06:21

My 10 year old lives in leggings and t-shirts, in fact we're away at the minute and that's all she's brought to wear.

I have never even thought that leggings on their own aren't suitable day to day wear and find it strange that somebody would.

Parker231 · 15/08/2021 06:31

Well I’m obviously doing everything wrong. I live in leggings and a T-shirt. Not see through as I buy good quality leggings and I don’t tuck my T-shirt in! If it’s hot it’s shorts and T-shirt. I am late 40’s.
What am I meant to be wearing?

SmallPrawnEnergy · 15/08/2021 06:42

If leggings were female underwear they would have a gusset. They don’t, as they’re not underwear, they’re outerwear YOU just don’t personally like them. Thank got society doesn’t subscribe to your Victorian way of dressing as all the women would still be in crinoline dresses like a sanny bag lady and be thrown in jail for daring to flash a bit of ankle.

RowanAlong · 15/08/2021 06:47

OP, I understand. Leggings are sort of a base layer unless you’re a toddler, child or a sporty woman with a great figure! Though I think she’s prob young enough to still get away with it!

As previous posters’ responses suggest, it’s so much of a fashion that you won’t get much sympathy (though like me there are others hiding who feel the same)..

kaleidoscopeheartless · 15/08/2021 06:47

My daughter lives in leggings and t shirt, don't have a problem with it.

Pythonesque · 15/08/2021 06:50

Clearly I'm in the minority here, but I'm with the OP. I really dislike the leggings and t-shirt look on any age. Really small children (boys or girls), toddler age, should be in something looser unless its cold enough for tights as well as trousers or a skirt. Adult women wearing leggings under a longer top, well ok (but often doesn't look great, depending on the length). But a short top, horrible and inappropriate in my opinion.

It's not something I ever say anything about, but I'm saddened that it seems so much the fashionable thing.

My teenage daughter wears leggings on their own for sport, yes, but only for sport. I don't think she's had any others though.

girlmom21 · 15/08/2021 06:56

Have I really just read that leggings are underwear? Do you not wear knickers if you're in leggings then?

OP I think she's fine as long as they're good quality leggings.

Aorh · 15/08/2021 06:57

“ , should be in something looser unless its cold enough for tights as well as trousers or a skirt.”

Why “should” they? You’re implying a reason why, uh I’m not getting it.

CeeJay81 · 15/08/2021 06:58

This thread has suprised me. My dd who's 7 and me live in leggings a lot, even when going out. Jeans don't fit my awkward shape, leggings are much more comfy. Dd doesn't like tights and skirts, so often wears leggings to school, shock horror. I usually where a long top or cardigan if going out though. Didn't realise we were going out in our under wear😂

I take it you don’t approve of love island. Grin We will have to go a lot further back than 60 years to find attire you approve of then, won’t we?! Tardis

I deffo get what you mean though, all those bare chested women walking around in the heatwave. Totally not men doing that at all oooh noooo…

Parker231 · 15/08/2021 06:59

@Pythonesque - so I’d better stay hidden in bed today and not go out for our usual brunch in my leggings and T-shirt!
What on earth is wrong with leggings (for any age) - comfortable, practical and look good. What do you think I should be wearing?

mustlovegin · 15/08/2021 07:00

^This.

T-shirt and leggings is ok to go to the park or the supermarket, but not appropriate for other occasions. What other clothes/outfits does she have OP? Is she copying her friends maybe?

Are these the same men who will walk through the town centre streets with no tops on at all? Hmm
traumatisednoodle · 15/08/2021 07:05

*might not be to your satisfaction but she's definitely dressed..

maybe stop buying her clothes you don't like her wearing... just a thought*

Good luck with that as a long term strategy. Age 9, fine, age 12 you might get away with it, age 14, not a hope.

PeterCorbeau · 15/08/2021 07:06

Confused What an odd thread

HerMammy · 15/08/2021 07:06

Tbh I always feel a bit sorry for wee girls who have leggings on under skirts or dresses, two lots of waistbands must be uncomfortable and makes me think the parents are very prudish.

Eh? A child dressing for practicality and comfort isn't being a fashion victim, surely?
