AIBU to think DD isn't fully dressed in leggings & a t-shirt?

shesellsseacats · 15/08/2021 00:44

When I ask DD (nearly 9) to get dressed she often comes down in just leggings and a t-shirt, tucked in.

She looks undressed to me.

A t-shirt and leggings are fine for sport, or bed, or for toddlers IMO. Or a long tshirt over leggings is fine too.

But she likes to wear her T-shirt tucked in (which looks lumpy!) She just looks like she forgot to finish getting dressed like that, AIBU?

And AIBU to ask her to put another layer over the leggings? e.g. a skirt or pinafore dress or shorts?

I know it's only a small thing in the scheme of things and I'm inclined to let her get her way if we're just going to the park for a play or something. But I'm curious how others see it?

There's nothing wrong with a child's body but then why is it only girls who wear leggings unless we're talking about men riding cycles?

'cos having your bollocks and willy constrained tightly in stretchy material is uncomfortable, you do it for sport (not just cycling) 'cos then actually having them all supported is helpful, but all the time it's uncomfortable.

There's a question of course about why men's fashions are more likely to rule things out because they're uncomfortable, but pretty sure that's the reason.

ExpressDelivery · 15/08/2021 08:26

I agree with you but I wouldn't "do" anything, other than make sure the leggings are always decent quality thick ones

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 15/08/2021 08:26

My nine year old wears cycling shorts and crop tops! It is the middle of summer and hot.

Maireas · 15/08/2021 08:29

Let her wear what's comfy while she's young. Her clothing choices will be policed before very long. If it hasn't started already.

starfishmummy · 15/08/2021 08:30

There's a simple solution. As she's only 8 then stop buying them for her. She can't wear what she doesn't have!!

NautaOcts · 15/08/2021 08:31

My dd went through a phase of tucking her jumper into jeans
You just have to go with it

godmum56 · 15/08/2021 08:31

@Lockheart

I'm going to side with the OP here.

Leggings and a t shirt are great for the gym or hanging around the house, but I don't consider them as proper clothes. I own loads of leggings but I wouldn't wear them outside the house unless I was exercising.

And for those saying what else could she wear - trousers, shirts, skirts, or dresses would be the obvious answer!

I grew up in the 90s and 00s and I remember it was always one of the above, we never wore leggings.

I grew up in the 50's/60's Should I still be wearing hats, gloves and tea dresses? oh and seamed nylons with a suspender belt and one of those bras stitched in pointy circles Grin FFS!
RockingMyFiftiesNot · 15/08/2021 08:31

Then I must spend 75% of my life not being fully dressed. As PPs have said, it may not be to your liking but it is acceptable. And yes, absolutely pick your battles.

Wilkolampshade · 15/08/2021 08:32

YABU to pretend your beef with this is about her being 'fully' dressed. She's obviously 'fully' dressed. You just don't like how she's wearing the leggings and think it makes her look worse in some way. You say, 'lumpy' - do you really mean fat?
Sure, it may not be super elegant. But please OP, just let her get on with being unselfconcious and dressing for mobility and practicality. Bless her, it's much easier to do handstands and climb trees if your T-shirt's tucked in.

Brefugee · 15/08/2021 08:32

Don't you care about the state of the streets and people's sloppy dressing? If men dressed the way loads of women do they'd be arrested under the obscenity laws.
Teach her some self-respect.

Bollocks to this. We often see men walking around with their shirts off. And they don't care if they are more Dad Bod than Greek Adonis. Leggings and t-shirt is fine. If the t-shirt is lumpy, teach her how to tuck it in properly, it's more comfortable that way.

It’s fine on children and slim adults who can carry that look, but not tight leggings on larger women unless worn with a longer top.

It is fine for anyone who wants to wear it.

chaosrabbitland · 15/08/2021 08:33

its fine ,and is what my then 9 year old lived in frequently , i think your issue might be that the tee is tucked in which looks messy and lumpy , but she is dressed and its something , as my 12 year old soon to be 13 who possesses all the qualities of a sloth will on my orders get changed out of her school uniform so i can wash it and then sit about in just her knickers because shes too blasted lazy to get into a tee and shorts lol

Wear what you like, it's none of my business.

I still don't think of leggings as being proper clothes. Like pyjamas - they're great, they're comfy, I've got loads of them, but I wouldn't wear them outside.

Aorh · 15/08/2021 08:34

I’m slim, but if it were larger “larger women shouldn’t wear that” would be a really good reason for me to start wearing whatever that item was.

Why on earth should someone’s size mean they “shouldn’t” wear something? Yes, different clothes are more/less flattering on different body shapes, but people should wear what they want.

knittingaddict · 15/08/2021 08:34

The op hasn't been back, so I don't think she cares too much about the responses here. Or she lit the blue touch paper and ran?

CliffordMystery · 15/08/2021 08:34

A pinafore over leggings?? FFS! Yes, YABU. Just be glad she’s out of her pyjamas!

Buy her better quality leggings

INeedNewShoes · 15/08/2021 08:37

I lived in leggings and t shirts at 9 for everyday wear but the fashion was different then as it was baggy t shirts not tucked in, which I think looks better.

I don't like the look of leggings with a short fitted t shirt so I can only hope that trends have moved on when DD gets to that sort of age. Whatever the current fashion, I wouldn't consider leggings and t shirt a proper outfit for meals out or other occasions so I will be that annoying parent if need be.

I agree with PP that I can think of a handful of countries on the continent where this fashion definitely has not taken hold.

Mummyoflittledragon · 15/08/2021 08:37

@HerMammy

Tbh I always feel a bit sorry for wee girls who have leggings on under skirts or dresses, two lots of waistbands must be uncomfortable and makes me think the parents are very prudish.
What? Big assumption there.
Antsinyourpanta · 15/08/2021 08:37

My DS has no trousers apart from school trousers. He doesnt wear leggings but he loves joggers (or shorts) because they are comfortable. They are not my favourite thing and tbh if we go to a restaurant sometimes I think it would be nicer if he had something more smart but in the grand scheme of things it doesnt really matter. He wears correct uniform at school, he likes to be comfortable the rest of the time (apparently primark joggers are more comfortable than others!Grin)

thereviewsmiths.com/sports-and-fitness/bam-bamboo-clothing-enduro-leggings-with-side-pocket/

I’m wearing this outfit today. It’s advertised as for gym and high street. Is this ok with Mn if I wear it to go to our local deli for brunch. (We’ve been going to the same place for 25 years so I’m sure they won’t be offended but wouldn’t want to upset Mn posters).

JayAlfredPrufrock · 15/08/2021 08:41

But there’s leggings and leggings.

The picture posted earlier looks fab.

Standing behind someone on the escalator wearing what amounts to a pair of black tights through which can be seen her thong, not so fine.

Lumpwoody · 15/08/2021 08:42

Is an EIGHT year old going to be wearing a thong?
