AIBU to think DD isn't fully dressed in leggings & a t-shirt?

shesellsseacats · 15/08/2021 00:44

When I ask DD (nearly 9) to get dressed she often comes down in just leggings and a t-shirt, tucked in.

She looks undressed to me.

A t-shirt and leggings are fine for sport, or bed, or for toddlers IMO. Or a long tshirt over leggings is fine too.

But she likes to wear her T-shirt tucked in (which looks lumpy!) She just looks like she forgot to finish getting dressed like that, AIBU?

And AIBU to ask her to put another layer over the leggings? e.g. a skirt or pinafore dress or shorts?

I know it's only a small thing in the scheme of things and I'm inclined to let her get her way if we're just going to the park for a play or something. But I'm curious how others see it?

It is true that people used to dress in a much smarter way. We have gone completely the opposite with some proud to go shopping in their pjs, or looking like they forgot their pants or skirt.

It doesn't mean that everyone has to try to look as scruffy as possible. 🤷
You'll still have some bitter ones commenting because someone dares to wear a dress, or god forbid let their daughter wear one. But on MN, it's fair game to comment and abuse someone slim, attractive (there's another thread on that one!), or wearing smarter clothes.

isthisareverse · 16/08/2021 11:58

Leggings have been normal attire for much of the past 30 years. Some can be a bit thin, but most are perfectly acceptable attire for most every day activities and are practical, comfortable garments.

the thread is not about leggings, but what you wear with them.

@NerrSnerr

Yes I am aware...doesn't suddenly make tucking a t-shirt into leggings look any less weird. It's the tucking bit that makes it look so strange, not the combo of clothing.

Why does is matter if another person's clothing choice looks weird- especially an 8 year old girl!

Maybe she thinks what you wear is weird, should you then change what you wear because a stranger doesn't approve?

I simply made an observation on the topic we're discussing. I didn't say she needs to change what she wears, I just gave my opinion. Also, just because I think something looks weird doesn't mean I don't approve. I don't particularly care, I just think it looks weird

It doesn't mean that everyone has to try to look as scruffy as possible.

Oh, I don’t have to try. It comes so easily to me! Grin

AryaStarkWolf · 16/08/2021 13:53

isn't that what most 9 year olds wear, nice and comfy, good for her

purplebunny2012 · 16/08/2021 17:24

I would wear that, but not with the tee tucked in.
You say it's like she's forgotten to get fully dressed, so what the heck would you add because I can't think what's needed to finish it off? And what exactly do you believe leggings are for?

silverlinin · 16/08/2021 17:41

Cannot bare it when parent dress their kids in leggings and the put a skirt/shorts over the top. What's the point! Leggings and a t shirt is absolutely fine.

karenjkayjay · 16/08/2021 18:00

Of course it’s fully dressed

jules0607 · 16/08/2021 18:15

Leggings are basically footless tights. So a load of people on here thinking t/shirts tucked in tights are fine - NO they’re not fine!

They are "basically" zipless trousers, too.

hey lets talk about how boys dress, give it some hyper focus, are shorts with top worn off inappropriate? Should we let our boys out like that? Let analyse how boys dress and how it really matters. Let's discuss boys in tracksuits, jeans, skinny jeans, are they properly dressed? Let's throw the lens onto boys and what they should be wearing. Are shaved haircuts a bit convict-y?

I hate it when you see young lads with half their boxer shorts hanging out of their jeans. Or when they're walking along hands in pockets juggling their balls away merrily in there... or topless in summer.
pollymere · 16/08/2021 18:30

I'm not being snobby here but practical. There is a huge difference between the thin see-through excuse for leggings from Primark and thick, good quality ones from M&S or John Lewis. I'd be fine with the latter and even a crop top but the Primark etc ones are thinner than some tights!

MidsummerMimi · 16/08/2021 18:43

Leggings and t shirt is totally underrated. It is a fabulous outfit, worn by the females of all ages in our house. We are trying to persuade the males to embrace the lovely leggings!
It is completely comfortable, totally practical, minimises fussy laundry and you have great freedom to go from a dog walk, to corner shop and home to practice the splits.
I genuinely feel uncomfortable on behalf of other people when I see them wearing stiff, itchy clothes.
Waistbands digging in and the blood supply cut of to body parts.
I genuinely can’t understand the strange “ modesty” concerns around leggings.

Absolutely.

Well I haven’t got dressed in years then! 😂. Must have been out for the day today not fully dressed. Must go to work not fully dressed!

loulous1985 · 16/08/2021 18:59

@DeflatedGinDrinker

So much worse when adults do it.

😂😂😂
In that case I've looked dreadful for the past year as I spent my entire pregnancy in the only thing that would fit (maternity leggings) and I still can't get into my old jeans 3 months postpartum so I'm still in the leggings...
I personally think I'm rocking the look. 🔥😂

toughdaay · 16/08/2021 19:04

Consider yourself lucky. I have a nudist for a 7 year old. She only puts on clothes to go out.

MaggieMagpie357 · 16/08/2021 19:06

Haven't had time to RFT but I just hopped on to say that she may have some sensory issues and is just wearing what's comfortable. My DD is almost 15 and has ASD, and is only just coming round to the fact that if she wants to fit in with her peers then she'll need to ditch the leggings for ripped jeans. (Although I know she'd much rather stay in leggings.)

McNuggetsAndMcFlurries · 16/08/2021 19:11

I pretty much live in leggings and t-shirts unless it's super hot then a dress or shorts and a t-shirt 🤷‍♀️ I've never understood why people care about this stuff... being comfortable should be the most important thing when it comes to clothes and shoes and I'd much rather be happy and comfy in my leggings and t-shirts than some tight top and jeans 😅

nancybotwinbloom · 16/08/2021 19:16

What are you wearing op?

a1poshpaws · 16/08/2021 19:31

She's wearing what I wear to go shopping; for lunch out; walking the dogs etc., most days in summer.

LoisLane66 · 16/08/2021 19:31

I often do my food shopping (Waitrose and M&S which are opposite each other) in leggings from Primark navy or grey £2.80 and a shirt or t-shirt not tucked in. If the shirt is oversized then I often add a wide belt or two narrow ones, which looks quite nice. Slides or trainers.
I'll wear yoga pants on other days with a strappy top and open or waist knotted shirt.
On the way out I check that all sides look ok in the full length mirror. 😮😄

shesellsseacats · 16/08/2021 19:53

@nancybotwinbloom

What are you wearing op?
Right now?

Erm... PJ bottoms and a t-shirt. 🤣

I'm just about to do a zoom, too! (But they won't be able to see the PJs)

(Preparing for the flaming.... )

I know you are being sarcastic but I'm not, I absolutely hate it when men wear jogging bottoms and boxers, you can clearly see their balls and penis bounce around as they walk or run. And men not wearing tops shouldn't be allowed on public transport or in shops.
