minnie driver claiming she was ''sick of being super famous''

I saw this in a headline article today online. Eh when I think of ''super famous'' I think Brad Pitt, Jenifer Aniston, Tom Cruise, J-Lo... generally people the majority of people would be familiar with and recognise their face/be a household name.

AIBU to think this b list actress is or never was ''super famous''? I struggle to think of projects she was in and I wouldn't even recognise her if I saw her on the street or on a picture. I am 35 btw too incase any1 thinks I'm too young so remember the 90s well.

i know Neve from The Craft first, scream films 2nd, she's more recognisable to me than the others. I'm aware of Mena Suvari as a name, never watched anything she's been in.

Minnie i remember very well, she was very famous for a short period, you couldn't open any of the big papers/magazines for a while without her being in them/front page/big article, especially when she was with Matt and just after.

She's probably the most famous out of the 3 in terms of ink/articles/publicity.

GrouchyKiwi · 13/08/2021 12:08

Honestly, OP, I'm about 2 years older than you, and lived in NZ when I was a teen. Minnie Driver was a HUGE star for a brief period of time. She was on every magazine, all the girls wanted her hair, she was on all the chat shows and you couldn't go anywhere without seeing stuff about her in the gossip mags etc.

I don't get why you've continued to argue this.

MolyHolyGuacamole · 13/08/2021 12:10

I originally scrolled past this because I thought said 'mini cab driver'

Says it all really

Also love that a self confessed film aficionado, with ‘140 VCRs’ no less, completely dismisses cult classic, Gross Pointe Blank, with ‘I’ve never heard of it’ and ‘a small hit’. Presumably that means low box office films like; The Shawshank Redemption, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, The Rocky Horror Picture Show and The Big Lebowski are also totally irrelevant in cinematic history. 454 posts on Minnie Driver: famous or not famous Grin

This is like that episode of The Office US when they all stop work and debate whether or not Hilary Swank is hot

Nitgel · 13/08/2021 12:14

Gross Pointe Blank is shite

Bryonyshcmyony · 13/08/2021 12:16

I think the OP doesn't know much about movies

Hannayeah · 13/08/2021 12:16

I’m not understanding how actresses in movies like American Pie and Scream can be compared to Minnie Driver.

And think OP doesn’t understand the 90s differences in how movie stars were perceived and treated vs. tv stars.

Hannayeah · 13/08/2021 12:17

How do you know since you already said you never saw it?

And yet, American Pie and Scream are high cinema.

Did anyone else imagine a great bank of video cassette recorders after that post?

We watch quite a lot of Film 4 which seems to have an endless stream of cult classics and I'm sure GPB has popped up on there and we'll always watch it.

In fact, I think if they showed a loop of GPB along with The Shawshank Redemption, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, The Rocky Horror Picture Show and The Big Lebowski we'd never turn it off or tire of those films.

KimDeals · 13/08/2021 12:19

I’m 46 and everyone knew Minnie Driver in the 90s!! Unless you lived under a rock and didn’t follow popular culture. She was in the press all the time because she was English. She was also ‘cool’, not conventionally as pretty as the rest, around the same time when John Cusack was cool too.

For all that, I just loved her in Circle of Friends, which wasn’t a ‘cool’ film at all Smile

Nitgel · 13/08/2021 12:23

I that case you were born in 1985, so no way would you know popular college culture people of the 90s. You ARE too young.

That’s funny! That’s a movie Ill watch any time it pops up. We watched a few weeks ago, in fact.

TheOrigRights · 13/08/2021 12:30

I know her from Maeve Binchy's film adaptation of Circle of Friends.

Because who cares?

And because, if you don’t like it then you were either under age or retired when it came out.

Hannayeah · 13/08/2021 12:31

Also because I don’t believe that the OP abandoned this thread. Unless she’s a publicist.
